Trading the nether is not actually faster then unless you have lots of gold. Best place to get books is the Stronghold before you defeat the dragon.
Otherwise just do the breeding thing around your base. While waiting - roam a plains biome back and forth (on a Horse if you can), slaughter all the cows you come across and you'll have lots of leather in no-time! Poor cows.
I have a new appreciation now about how difficult Minecraft can be when you just play without any guide or looking much stuff up.... The game gives you hints, and recipe unlocking is good for tips if you take time to learn how the crafting table works - when progression gets frustrating, then you do need to go looking things up (https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki) is the best place to look up about any specifics - items, mobs, crafting recipies etc.
If you (or anyone else) is totally new to Minecraft - here are some of the super basic steps:
1) Learn the controls - how to open and close chests / doors, use a tool or fist to attack mobs etc.
2) Gather resources and unlock recipes during the day. The very first tip the game gives you is "punch a tree".
3) Even if you're not able to sleep in a bed for a while, stay the nights in a safe place - a hole in the side of a hill and surround yourself with dirt. You can spend the night crafting tools and items from materials you gathered in the day - and learn a lot in the process.
4) The early game can result in lots of death and destruction if you are not sure what to do - but learn how to store spare items, and how to get back to your safe place. You can make multiple "safe places" until you have enough resources or motivation to build a house.
I don't want to get more specific unless you have more questions, but once you've got these steps down; then progression will be much faster.
Let us know how you get on....
I just watched a video of a dude playing MC for the first time - and it was fascinating (and rather painful), but he does get the basics worked out in 2 episodes (and youtubers tend to faff a bit so they are more entertaining).
Nether quartz bricks. Obviously not as massive qty's can be mined as stone etc - but makes a build out of them (even a floor, or ceiling) more worthwhile or you get better satisfaction from doing it.
Although shouldn't there be some spoiler alert - or a way to find out what the seed is about without all the 'preview' about where all the structures and resources are?
With this one - it'd a good challenge to essentially complete the game - eg go to the Nether and get everything ready to defeat the dragon, BEFORE going to any of mainland. There just needs to be some 'starter wood' anywhere - shipwreck or Abandoned Mine.
Don't over think it.... just play - there's no need to rush to 'complete the game' and even making mistakes early on and not knowing exactly how to do stuff can lead you to some interesting places and experiences. If you look up too much info too soon, you'll be playing someone else's game rather than finding your own way.
When I started; I took a boat trip on the open ocean when it was raining, and got so lost I didn't make it back to my starter house for a number of months. I had no idea where I was in the world, so never broke a bed (so my respawn point was always local).
But of course when you come to using redstone, going to the Nether, or the End - then it's probably wise to look up info (or videos) on those things as you come to them as they are very dangerous places. Villager trading charts are very useful, and keeping a list of interesting places you visit or would like to come back to.
When the new update comes out with much faster minecarts - it'll be almost impossible to do anything while moving....
But do you mean like a "station" or a stop? In this case, put a powered rail down that is 'unpowered' until you hit a button.
When moving towards it, the unpowered rail should stop you. Then you hit the button (and your other levers if they are for other things) and you'll start moving again.
Before you get Totems, potions and all that... one of the best things you can do is get Fire Prot IV on a piece of diamond gear - it's possible pretty early game really, once you've got a village or even an enchant table. It gives you so much more time to get out of your situation, esp if you've got a waterbucket handy somewhere.
I think I've lost everything to lava at least 5 times... One of the most memorable was falling into a ravine, and panicking so much that I was incapable of pressing the correct keys or think of a way out. Def LOOSE EVERYTHING those first times.
Each time though - I replicate "what went wrong" so it won't happen again.
The latest was just yesterday, although I didn't die due to having a God apple on the hotbar (and then ender pearled out). Got knocked off the top of bastion, easy mistake. Thought I had a potion of fire resist, but did not (it was strength! haha), anyway first reaction was to place blocks, as had 'plenty of time' with the Fire Prot IV - but you can't place blocks as the structure floats on the surface!! Unless you place them UNDER the lava then across, which takes a fair time.
Then tried it a 2nd time (to practice) couldn't get it done fast enough to be sure of not dying; had a fire resist potion this time when I was taking too long.
Gravel might have worked - hey at least use for the junk stuff the piglin trades.
Great, it's nice to do a slow read sometimes. Actually get into the detail.. I came back to forums after trying a minecraft discord server - which is absolutely not the place for 'long form discussion'; I posted only 3 paragraphs and someone had to reply to announce they "were not reading all of that", haha. I haven't found these "way more active" sites either though. eg Planet Minecraft doesn't look very enticing.
Yes, thanks for the considered reply(s)... agree that more consolidation is better unless the forums are overflowing. The existing tagging system (for identifying your version) seems to work well, so I'll probably just use that unless the moderators disagree. Looking at the general forum, it has very little actual survival discussion - so the Java Survival is much more relevant, esp as versions come closer together as you suggest.

Because you don't like killing cows?
Best way then is to go the Nether and trade Gold with Piglins. You'll need to gear up a bit before going in there...
Do you need mostly for making books... Or rather; how much leather do you need?

Wondering how you are getting along?

wow that is an impressive build... how many players are involved in a such a massive build? All in survival? Amazing details.

Java gets a "survival mode" board - does this mean Bedrock players aren't welcome here?
Or we just post in the General, haha?
I tried joining a Discord server to discuss play and builds; but it was full of 12 olds who had no interest at all.
If anyone knows of the best places to chat about long term survival play and strategies... please let me know!
Many thanks...

yes, same for all of them. it's weapons and tools that have levels up to 5. Efficiency, power, smite etc

There is only protection IV. There is no 5.
But plenty of villagers can offer Prot IV. I've got one as cheap as 21 emeralds.
