Fairy Lights adds decorative hanging lights that can have any combination of six light variants each with one of the sixteen dye colors.

Crafting

In order to craft hanging lights you first must craft the lights. Lights come in six standard variants, fairy light, paper lantern, orb lantern, flower light, ornate lantern, and oil lantern. There are also 4 spooky lights, spider light, ghost light, jack o'lantern, skull light, witch light, snowflake light, icicle light, and meteor light.

Fairy lights are crafted by a horizontal combination of iron ingot, string or stick, iron ingot, along with any combination of lights to specify a pattern (left-right, top-down). If glowstone is included the hanging lights will twinkle. If string is used there will be slack in the connection and if a stick is used the connection will be straight. The hanging lights item will only show the first four light colors, but the most lights that can be crafted is eight by placing a hanging lights in a crafting table with eight lights.

Pennant bunting is made by first crafting pennants that can be any dye color.

Fairy Lights Usage

Right click the hanging lights, garland, or bunting on the side of a block, or an existing fastener to place a fastener, now there will be a connection from the fastener to you. From then you right click on another side of a block, or an existing fastener, to complete the connection. The maximum length of a fairy light strand is 32 blocks.

The slack of hanging lights, garland, or bunting can be increased by right clicking it with string and decreased by right clicking with a stick. Hanging lights can be turned on and off by right clicking.

Cacti, short for CAtegorical CreaTive Inventory, redesigns the creative inventory to enable more immediate access to mods' creative tabs. When many mods are installed that add custom creative tabs it becomes cumbersome to page between several tabs while using the creative menu, to resolve this Cacti groups every mods' tabs into their own category. These categories are displayed as tabs on the side of the menu.

For mods with many tabs, Cacti provides the ability for them to categorize their own tabs with the Cacti API.

Configuration

Display Side

By default the categories are displayed on the left of the GUI, this option allows you to toggle it to the right in case it is more convenient.

Group Single Tab Mods

Mods which only add a single tab will be put under a "Grouped Mods" category when this option is true, by default it is false.

Remember Last Tab

If this option is true when the GUI is opened it will return to the previously opened tab, true by default.

Paint This! enables players to paint with a wide selection of dyes onto canvases of many sizes to sign and frame.

Crafting

Horsehair is an important part in crafting the various brushes, it can be obtained by shearing horses. Tolerant horses will let you shear their hair. Horses get increasingly annoyed after each individual shear and become tolerant over time, a horse that's completely annoyed will take 3 minutes and 20 seconds to become completely tolerant. Therefore, you'll only get 3 to 4 horsehairs on average in 3 quick shears at complete tolerance.

Bellow are the main crafting recipes. In order of top-down, left-right there is Easel, 1×1 Canvas, Small Paintbrush, Medium Paintbrush, Large Paintbrush, Palette, Palette Knife, and Signing Brush.

Palette

Dyes can be added to a palette by placing them around the palette, each relative position corresponds to one of the eight spots on a palette. A palette knife is used to remove dyes. Place the palette knife next to palette in the position of the dye you wish to remove. The palette knife does have durability and is repaired in an anvil with an iron ingot.

Canvas

To create a canvas larger than 1×1, you arrange canvasess into a rectangular shape such that for each canvas the width of canvases above and bellow are the same and the height of canvases to the left and right are the same. For example to make a 2×1 canvas you place two 1×1 canvases horizontally. Furthermore to make a 2×2 you arrange four 1×1 canvases in a 2 by 2 square.

In order to frame a painting you simply need to surround the canvas with eight sticks.

Painting

Canvas

The largest a canvas can be is 4×4 and they are be placed on a wall or on an easel. Canvases can be framed or unframed, framed canvases are a small amount larger so they can't be placed directly next to one another like unframed canvases can.

Easel

An easel is used to hold a canvas while painting. They can support a canvas whose size is at most 3×2, larger canvases will need to be placed on a wall. Easels are very similar to armorstands, so they are affected by gravity and take a couple hits to break.

Palette

A palette is what enables you to change the dye on your paintbrush. You do so by putting your brush to the right of the palette in your hotbar and use the palette to put the dye on to the brush which is cycled through the ones on the palette.

Paintbrush

The three sizes of paintbrushes, small, medium, and large have a radius of 1, 2, and 3 respectively. To paint use a paintbrush with dye on a canvas and be within the reach of 3 meters.

Signing Brush

The signing brush is used to sign your paintings. You apply dye to it like a regular paintbrush and depending on if you use it on the left or right half of the canvas the signature will be placed accordingly. A signed painting can only be edited by the signer.

Oh my god some of the patterns are adorable!

Anyway...Now THIS is something new! I've seen people create mods so you can paint blocks on any side, but this is really unique!

I have an interesting suggestion, because I see that you want to introduce quite a lot of textures. I think what might interest you is to take a Chisel Mod-esque approach, hear me out:

- You could initially create the above wallpaper patterns, there would be no recipe changes to anything to the ones above. However, there could be a name change for the patterns, perhaps something like "Sky themed wallpaper" or "Sweets Theme".

- You would still be able to use the crafted wallpaper as is. There would be no change in placing or use before and after using them with the Catalog.

- A new item, called a "Wallpaper Catalog" is introduced (Or any kind of item that can be used to open a UI, using this because I use them a lot for inspirations when designing patterns and such ). The Wallpaper catalog could be crafted using 4 wallpapers of any kind around a book.

- Right clicking the wallpaper catalog opens up a user interface that allows you to drop any of the wallpapers into a slot, and gives you the option to choose a variation. The variations could have a preview in the UI so you can see what wallpapers you can choose from. For example, Lets say you craft the Sky wallpaper and want to choose a variation for it. Some might be a sunset, a starry sky, some planet/space scene, and a stormy sky. All you need to do is select one of the variations in the UI. Of course you could introduce so many more variants of a texture with this method. All of the Wallpapers can be converted back to the original, crafted wallpaper. (see the screenshot for the UI at the end of the because I am awful at explanations)

-This method might be useful to help lessen the number of crafting recipes needed. You can simply decide on either creating a new theme entirely, OR just adding on to the respective categories.

Minecraft 1.8 has so many performance problems that I just don't know where to start with.

Maybe the biggest and the ugliest problem is the memory allocation. Currently the game allocates (and throws away immediately) 50 MB/sec when standing still and up to 200 MB/sec when moving. That is just crazy.

What happens when the game allocates 200 MB memory every second and discards them immediately?

1. With a default memory limit of 1GB (1000 MB) and working memory of about 200 MB Java has to make a full garbage collection every 4 seconds otherwise it would run out of memory. When running with 60 fps, one frame takes about 16 ms. In order not to be noticeable, the garbage collection should run in 10-15 ms maximum. In this minimal time it has to decide which of the several hundred thausand newly generated objects are garbage and can be discarded and which are not. This is a huge amount of work and it needs a very powerful CPU in order to finish in 10 ms.

2. Why not give it more memory?
Let's give Minecraft 4 GB of RAM to play with. This would need a PC with at least 8 GB RAM (as the real memory usage is almost double the memory visible in Java). If the VM decides to use all the memory, then it will increase the time between the garbage collections (20 sec instead of 4), but it will also increase the garbage collection time by 4, so every 20 seconds there will be one massive lag spike.

3. Why not use incremental garbage collection?
The latest version of the launcher by default enables incremental garbage collection (-XX:+CMSIncrementalMode) which in theory should replace the one big GC with many shorter incremental GCs. However the problem is that the time at which the smaller GCs happen and their duration are mostly random. Also they are not much shorter (maybe 50%) than a full scale GC. That means that the FPS starts to fluctuate up and down and there are a lot of random lag spikes. The stable FPS with a lag spike from time to time is replaced with unstable FPS and microstutter (or not very micro depending on the CPU). This strategy can only work with a powerful enough CPU so that the random lag spikes become small enough not to be noticeable.

4. How did that work in previous releases?
The previous Minecraft releases were much less memory hungry. The original Notch code (pre 1.3) was allocating about 10-20 MB/sec which was much more easy to control and optimize. The rendering itself needed only 1-2 MB/sec and was designed to minimize memory waste (reusing buffers, etc). The 200 MB/sec is pushing the limits and forcing the garbage collector to do a lot of work which takes time. If it was possible to control how and when the GC works then maybe it would be possible to distribute the GC pauses such that they are not noticeable or less disturbing. However there is no such control in the current Java VM.

5. Why is 1.8 allocating so much memory?
This is the best part - over 90% of the memory allocation is not needed at all. Most of the memory is probably allocated to make the life of the developers easier.
- There are huge amounts of objects which are allocated and discarded milliseconds later.
- All internal methods which used parameters (x, y, z) are now converted to one parameter (BlockPos) which is immutable. So if you need to check another position around the current one you have to allocate a new BlockPos or invent some object cache which will probaby be slower. This alone is a huge memory waste.
- The chunk loading is allocating a lot of memory just to pass vertex data around. The excuse is probably "mutithreading", however this is not necessary at all (see the last OptiFine for 1.7).
- the list goes on and on ...

The general trend is that the developers do not care that much about memory allocation and use "best industry practices" without understanding the consequences. The standard reasoning being "immutables are good", "allocating new memory is faster than caching", "the garbage collector is so good these days" and so on.

Allocating new memory is really faster than caching (Java is even faster than C++ when it comes to dynamic memory), but getting rid of the allocated memory is not faster and it is not predictable at all. Minecraft is a "real-time" application and to get a stable framerate it needs either minimal runtime memory allocation (pre 1.3) or controllable garbage collecting, which is just not possible with the current Java VM.

6. What can be done to fix it?
If there are 2 or 3 places which are wasting memory (bugs), then OptiFine can fix them individually. Otherwise a bigger refactoring of the Minecraft internals will be needed, which is a huge task and not possible for OptiFine.

7. Example
A sample log of GC activity with effective FPS for the GC lag spikes is available here.
- the average rendering FPS is about 50 FPS
- the GC lag spikes have effective FPS of 7-20
- there are 1-2 lag spikes per second caused by GC activity

tldr; When 1.8 is lagging and stuttering the garbage collector is working like crazy and is doing work which has nothing to do with the game itself (rendering, running the internal server, loading chunks, etc). Instead it is constantly cleaning the mess behind the code which thinks that memory allocation is "cheap".
