posted a message on Does .9999...=1?
It is all a problem of semantics... We simply chose to make 0.999... = 1 as the limit of the infinitely recurring 9 equation. 0.99... itself isn't a number, what it represent is, just like an equation isn't a number itself.

I would certainly love to see a higher sky limit and higher mountains but the current limit might be a way to optimize the data structure of the world. However, maybe he could sacrifice a bit of the world's size limit for a higher sky limit?

    Hello.
I suggest to NOT begin with Python, Ruby or C#, begin with C or BASIC, so you can learn to think as a programmer, and you 'll need to do the algorithms and that thinks by yourself, and not a range(0,20) for example.

On the contrary, working in a language like C means that you have to spend a whole lot of time focusing on things that are *not* the algorithms, such as memory and type management. For some people that's important, sure. But to someone who just wants to paint, grinding and mixing your own pigments is not necessarily an important part of the task - most painters would much rather not waste all their time on that hassle just buy pre-made tubes of paint instead. You can think of the decision between a low-level (read: you have to do a whole lot of the crap work yourself) language like C and a higher-level (read: the language takes care of the crap work for you so you can focus on the functional parts of the program) language like Python or Ruby as being a very similar choice.

I very much agree. C and even C++ will be a hell for a beginner. Higher level language exists for the very reason that it's easier.

posted a message on Graphics card problem, yay!
Does it blue screen only when you play games? My radeon 5970 also had such problems depending on the game and driver version. I flashed the bios of my card, I reinstalled the latest drivers (I used driver sweeper) and I keep only one screen connected to it and so far I have no problems. In short: ATI drivers and bios are crap.

You might want to uninstall your driver with driver sweeper (read the how to use on their page) and reinstall. Did you use one of the bios on techPowerUp? If nothing of these work, then you might have a faulty card.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I just started playing and I can already say it's the scariest by far. The John Defoe serie was faily scary: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm. The F.E.A.R. serie was fairly scary too.

And of course: ALONE IN THE DARK!

posted a message on ohai any of you know mysql and php?
His query is fine, read up: http://www.php.net/manual/en/language.types.string.php#language.types.string.parsing.

Are you getting any errors displayed or in your php error log if activated? Try removing the @ symbol. The $dbpass is empty, I assume you removed it to hide it from these forums?

I can suggest you a few things:

    1) Store user password as a hash (with sha1 function for example).
    2) Use mysqli or better, PDO instead of plain old mysql_* functions.

posted a message on Advice on Which Laptop to Choose (Minecraft)
I don't see any mention of a nVidia 310m on the Sony?

If I might, I would suggest you the following one if you can find one where you live: http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=69%2C70%2C71,3537&webid=909202&affixedcode=WW. Better processor, slighty better graphic card, 4g of ram is more than enough. I own one and it run minecraft at maximum view distance and details flawlessly. I played through FEAR 1 and tried fear 2 and they were playable at low/medium settings (you must disable shadows). I think it's very hard to beat for the price. The small downside is that the screen have a bad viewing angle and reflect a bit much.

    Quote from nsahler »
You could learn almost whatever the hell programming language you want and still be as good of a programmer as anyone else.

What makes a good programmer is the mindset and thought process, not (always) the tools he (or she :tongue.gif:) is using.
A good programmer could not only apply one concept used in one language to another language, but could also adapt to other languages as needed.

Programmers are learners and problem solvers. We are always willing to learn new things and solve many problems. Anything that the world throws at us, in fact.

One becomes a better programmer when he realizes that he/she knows nothing

That's the key part. This can be extended: You become a better person when you realize that you know nothing.
