Might be a failed firewall setting.. Try disabling the firewalls on both computers.

Disabled local firewalls; seems to be working. Thank you for your help.

    Quote from McScavenger

Could you give a detailed explanation of how exactly you tried to open it up to LAN, you tried to connect to it, and what doesn't work?

We are in the same house. We have 2 computers; 1 laptop and one base unit. Both are connected through the same router. We each own our own Minecraft account (registered and legal! LOL). Both same update, no texture pack or mods. We are trying to direct connect as I have seen on youtube "how-to" videos. He starts his world, esc, select LAN. His world shows up on my select screen. when I click on it, it tells me Failed to connect connection timed out. Tried multiple times, resetting, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't you bother reading the post Directly bellow yours:
    http://www.minecraft...st__p__15132422
Which says pretty much what your suggesting before you suggested it?

It does not mention what I suggested. It simply suggested colors of end items match the color of the wood they come from. I am suggesting changing the complete look of the item to match the corresponding wood. You obviously didn't understand what I wrote. Glad I could clear it up for you.

posted a message on Fences and ladders
I would like to see added the ability to craft different types of fences and ladders from the different types of wood. maple would offer no change from what we have now. Birch would produce white pickett fencing and trellis for ladder. Pine would make tall stockade fence and thick "barn" ladders. Jungle wood would make a tiki style fence and ladder. Obviously the sticks would be different for each type of wood block they come from. You would need all of the same type stick for the fence/ladder you wish to build. You could mix and match for tools, rail, pictures, ect. though.

Curious, anyone know how to do connected glass blocks? I tried, and failed. lol

When you run MC Patcher make sure you select the box for "Connected Textures". That should do it.

posted a message on 1.2.5 Villager Spawning Tips
I beleive villagers spawn based on the number of doors. I remember reading about that somewhere. I think it was one villager per 3 doors. I know it's one golom per 16 villagers though. I adopted a town and built a few houses near it, but no new villagers apeared. After I read the door thing, I placed doors on every doorway, made closets and baths in the houses, and built attics filled with doors. In a few minecraft days I had dozens and dozens of villagers and 5 iron goloms! No "secret underground city" needed!
After a while the number of villagers became a major nucience. They kept getting into areas they weren't supposed to. I had to put fences and gates everywhere. They also tried to all stay overnight in a large farmhouse I had built (with many doors!!). The noise of the doors constantly opening and closing was maddening! Worst of all, they would get in the way when I was cutting trees, and they would get hit. This pissed off the goloms and I wound up fighting fights I wasn't in the mood for (the agravation wasn't worth the iron, to me)
Unfortunately there was a fire one night, and now my town has a bit more manageable population.
Try the door trick, and good luck!

posted a message on Snapshot 12w18a - How To Install (New Step)
    Quote from Skylinerw

With the new snapshot out (http://www.mojang.co...napshot-12w18a/), a new error message is given when entering or creating a world:

When you download the new snapshot, it comes in a ZIP file rather than JAR. Extract the ZIP file and you'll see two folders called "bin" and "server".

As usual, the minecraft.jar in the "bin" folder is what replaces your usual JAR. However, a new step is involved.

You have to create a new folder called "server" in your ".minecraft" folder and drag the contents of the "server" folder from the ZIP file into this new folder (or you can simply drag the "server" folder from the ZIP file into the ".minecraft" folder).

As well, when you "Save and Quit" your worlds, it will be "Disconnect" instead. And, unsure if it's a bug, the game doesn't actually pause while in the escape menu.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting this! Call me old, but I was a bit unsure of how to install this snapshot. BIG help!!

I just logged on to suggest being able to run parralel wires without them auto connecting. I was thinking of the addition of a junction block of sorts. The multi-coloring would be excellent to identify multiple circuits in the same area.

posted a message on Villagers Building New Houses
I, for one, am "pro-villager"! I tend to take care of villages in hopes that one day soon Mojang will give them advanced AI.
However, if they are allowed to build thier own homes, it could end up having a viral effect. Think about it; It takes X villagers to build a house. With a new villager being "born" for every 3 doors, the population increases with 3 houses built. It would start off slowly at first but think of what happens when the numbers start to rise. Say you have 10 villagers and it takes 5 villagers to build a house. In 2 build cycles, you have a new villager. (2 buildings x 2cycles = 4 buildings = 4 doors. 3 doors= 1 new villager). In 8 build cycles you will have 16 new doors and 5 new villagers. Now for each build cycle you are building 3 houses (with 3 doors) and getting a new build crew in 5 cycles.
Not only would this bog the game speed down, but imagine what happens after playing for a while. It would be all out war just to keep your land! While this might seem like fun to some of you, in the long run (and with all of those goloms!) it would get very old, very quickly.
I think it would be nice to have them build their own buildings if there were restrictions; only so many blocks away from the well (and they couldn't build wells!), or you would have to lay the (4) cornerstones. A pre-specified arrangement would determine the building type. The player could allow the village size to increase by building another well.
Either way, I don't see them adding this feature, but it is nice that villagers will populate a town that YOU build.
    Can't wait for trading!

posted a message on Anti crafting
I was thinking about something like this a few months ago while playing on superflat. I had a chest full of Iron armor that was all but useless to me. Since there are no ores in superflat it would have been nice to get iron for tools (this was before golems). A reverse crafting table is an excellent idea, especially for those of us that do a lot of challenges where supplies are limited. Of course the return/exchange rate would be modified by the condition of the item.
Take for instance a helmet (we'll use iron, but the same goes for all ore types). It takes 5 ingots to craft a helmet. If you decide that you don't need it anymore(for whatever reason!) it can be uncrafted: undamaged=4 ingots, green bar=3 ingots, off-green=2, and orange=1. Red, you get nothing. Pickaxe: undamaged= 2ingots+1stick, used through yellow 1 ingot+ 1 stick, and again, red=0. Of course there are end items that can not be uncrafted. Any food item for instance.
Items without a "use bar" would get a standard, but reduced, return. i.e. fences, tracks, ladders, ect.
Sticks can be turned back to boards at a 4 to 1 rate.
Another "helpful" task of the table would be to break down stone. Smooth/stone block to cobble to gravel to sand. Again, this is more for of us challenge takers where gravel/sand is limited.
Keep in mind that there are still some of us out here that play vanilla/unmodded, so a change like this would be GREATLY appriciated!

posted a message on "life sized" biomes
    Quote from gladiator60

sorry but i would never want to take 20 to 30 minutes just to get to another biome... bad idea

If you had read and understood(!) the post you would have seen that this is intended as an option, not a remake. It's simple; if you don't like it, don't do it (like Superflat). That's the best part of "Freedom of Choice". It's not like any of these "suggestions" are going to be implemented anyway.

posted a message on "life sized" biomes
Currently, when we start a new world, we have a choice of original and superflat. I propose a third choice that offers a world with huge biomes, 10k or more across. Sure it's fun setting up your home within view of 5 biomes (with a 6th less than 2 real minutes walk away), but imagine the challenge of building your towns in only one biome type. (If you spawn in the ocean, restart or swim!). The lucky spawn would be on the border of 2 biomes, and even more rare, 3.
Nether gates and minecart track systems would definately be required for travel.
I suggested this as a world type to allow the player to have a choice. If you don't want to play it, then you don't have to. Like superflat.

posted a message on Long range light beacons
After searching, I found many suggestions regarding types of marker beacons. What I would like to see would be something a bit more basic. Think of a lighthouse or airport marker. A craftable light beacon that visibly appears in the world up to say 500 blocks or more (unobstructed). Imagine being able to cross ocean biomes, or large desert/plains areas without the use of maps, mods, or f3. Another example comes to mind with LOTR's warning fire beacons. This would greatly help those of us who play "vanilla" but think leaving a trail of red wool (et al) is a bit ridiculous.

posted a message on [1.2.5] Village Protector Challenge
I like the seed, but as someone else said, I am playing on regular so I don't lose the town I build. I had been marking deaths with stones in a graveyard. The problem I'm having is villagers are not multiplying. I know about the door to mob ratio and whatnot, but with 10 buildings, each with 2 bedrooms, the 3 villagers left do not reproduce. Is this a glitch in the game or do I need to build a cheap motel too? I am down to 1 villager now and will reluctantly have to restart, but I don't want to if villagers dont multiply. Anyone else ith this problem?
