Sep 17, 2011McMyAdmin is a great tool to manage your vanilla or bukkit server, and includes a scheduler to automate routine tasks. I bought a license, but you don't need to if you're at/under 8 players.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
Sep 17, 2011On my Windows server I use Genie Timeline Home ($40), which does block level backups, meaning you can do point-in-time restores all the way back to your first backup. It may be overkill for your needs, but they do have a free version with the same basic feature set.Posted in: Server Support and Administration

Wanna join my server and see if you can
that would help a lot
anyone please if you do post again and ill give everyone the IP adress
No thanks. If you flew around for 3-4 hours, then we'll take your word for it that they aren't spawning. Like webrosc says, check the bug list, or take a look at the 1.8 threads.

Sep 12, 2011It would seem we've ruled out most of the obvious stuff.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
Does the laptop connect over wifi? I've run across folks who routinely connect to their neighbor's wireless without even realizing it, for years, with the same IP schema to confuse matters :laugh.gif: In short, try a wired connection if you haven't already.
Try to ping 192.168.1.100 from the laptop. Replies? Request timed-out?
Sep 12, 2011With your new-found bandwidth, you're hardware is the bottleneck now :wink.gif:Posted in: Server Support and Administration
If you want to stay with Windows, add another 2GB RAM. Otherwise switch to a minimal Ubuntu install and you could conceivably support ~15 players.
Spout will still help you with your monthly cap.
Sep 12, 2011Run ipconfig from a Command Prompt on the hosting PC and verify you have the correct IP address (192.168.1.100).Posted in: Server Support and Administration
Is the laptop running a firewall, specifically a bidirectional firewall like ZoneAlarm, Norton 360, etc? Disable the the firewall on the laptop to rule that out as a cause.
Sep 12, 2011Bandwidth will be your limiting factor. Read my reply here regarding bukkit & Spout: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/622577-how-can-i-host-with-more-people/Posted in: Server Support and Administration
As far as your hardware's concerned, you could probably host 5-8 players comfortably. I used to run 10-players on my Windows Home Server machine with similar specs.
Sep 12, 2011Make sure you have a port exception for Minecraft (tcp port 25565) in your Windows Firewall.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
You do not need to port-forward. Since you don't have white-listing enabled, you may someday find others joining your server without you even realizing it.

So i have ran a server for the first time. Where do I get the ip?
This is covered in the wiki here.
Sep 12, 2011Here's a few options that may allow you to squeeze in another 2-3 players:Posted in: Server Support and Administration
1) If you run a bukkit server, grab the Spout plugin, and have all of your players use the Spoutcraft client. Spout-enabled clients will cache chunks to disk, which will gradually reduce your bandwidth needs as players move around.
2) Hamachi's pay version (Managed) will allow you to enable tunnel compression. This should give you 10%-30% compression, and possibly 1-2 more players. You'd have to enable this setting on all the machines in the Hamachi network. At $200 per year though, you may be better off renting a small VPS. Self-hosting gives ultimately gives you the most freedom.
Sep 11, 2011"Best" is a subjective term, but the ones mentioned above all address various aspects of griefing. Consider adding NoCheat and Hawkeye/Logblock for logging and rollbacks.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
Doing regular backups is another form of insurance. If any of these plugins are broken or are mis-configured, you'll have backups available and can restore your worlds easily.
