Hate using redstone circuits? This Hub design supports up to 6 different platforms if you use each side of the building. The only redstone you use is to connect the button to the powered track. Using powered track at intervals you can go as far as you want. The video at this point demonstrates a short track from the Hub to a sub-station and back again. Minecart dispensers keep you from having to carry one around constantly.
I did only SSP until my friends got a private server. I don't think I've touched my single player world in weeks. There's not griefing, not stealing... it's great.
I get the black screen as well, and since I've turned rendering from far to normal it hasn't occured but maybe once or twice. It's to do with the java I think, it stops responding. I've updated and/or reinstalled everything, but I find that just setting distance to normal fixes it.
I can't keep wolves alive, especially when I'm constructing stuff. They jump off the walls too much. The first guy made me sad, but now I just make them sit or go get another one.
I thought slimes were rather common, I see/hear one every time I go down into my mines or explore a new cave. Huh.
The first encounter I had with one I had no idea what it was, and thought the splat splat sound was some sort of dungeon or other mob. I was crapping myself trying to find 'it' and when I came upon the slime I was puzzled as hell.

This was not my idea but I had to share when I was finished. I didn't think I would fill it up, but some chests are getting pretty full.
This was designed myself however. If you want a redstone free minecart station, plans like that are hard to find.

I always put a giant lava fountain on top of my houses so if I get lost I can climb the nearest hill and see where it is.
