Like how you think and I was going to suggest him. He is amazing! I was going to use him to learn java as well but I thought I could just do basics with what minecraft has for modding because the main project I am doing, I want in C++ so I am learning C++ with him. By the way this was not just to talk, I recommend his main site:
I think I have an idea... maybe you could make it so we could stick with the default Minecraft launcher if we preferred to, and just install the mods manually (maybe make a mod pack?)? I would prefer to just use the default Minecraft launcher, but if we need to have the special launcher, I guess I would be okay with it... after all it's the map I want :biggrin.gif:.
It will not be very different from the normal Minecraft launcher. It will have the same GUI with just three file inputs added. I don't want to revamp it and add lots of useless things.
One more possibility is that I will add an automatic downloader, that will follow the adf.ly links (so the authors get revenue) and download the files from the file hosting sites, meaning that the procedure will be completely automated (except the person will have to enter some captchas). Maybe it will work.
Dear community, we are currently trying to decide if we want a custom launcher or not. So we want you to decide. Here is some info about the launcher:
The launcher will make a new directory for just PortalCraft. On first run, it will require you to log in (the launcher will be open-source, so if you don't trust us you can look ath the source and compile it yourself) to download a fresh copy of Minecraft. This can be skipped by clicking the "Import from normal Minecraft installation directory" button. Then it will require you to select the archives of the mods required (ModLoader, AudioMod and Portal Gun) as we don't have the permission to redistribute these. The rest will be done by the launcher.
Advantages of the launcher: this will allow us to modify some base classes, allowing us to do more than the megabuttons, normal Portal buttons and goop. This will improve both the visual and gameplay qualities of the map. Disadvantages: is quite different from installing normal mods. I don't really know if this will be a problem or not, so it is up to you to decide.
Advantages of having no launcher: drag'n'drop out of an archive - "put this into mods", "put this into maps" style. Again, it is a matter of personal preference, so we need your opinions. Disadvantages: less eye-candy and also limits some other things, which might become vital later on. This also means that the mods might be incompatible with other mods you may have installed.
No, i was not running a shell on that server.
The problem was resolved.
I was standing in /home/user when executing the run command on the server, hence it was stored in the dir i was in :smile.gif: But thank you for in the end becoming less of an ass and more of a helpfull person.
Since I'd not needed to go to the specific dir for anything so far on ubuntu, it had not struck me that i could.. The last time i had to change betw directories by command would be over 10 years ago when i stored away my old dos computers..
Failing and learning <3
That is exactly what I meant.
Tip for the next time: don't insist on anything when you are not sure that you are right.
Damn, I probably figured out your newbie problem while looking through my bukkit plugins workspace.
You are running a shell script from $HOME, right? So the shell script is in $HOME, and the server files are in $HOME/minecraftserver1/, the relative path will be relative $HOME, not $HOME/minecraftserver1. So instead of java -jar ~/minecraftserer1/serverjar.jar, you need to have:
cd ~/minecraftserver1/
java -jar serverjar.jar
This will make the relative path be relative to $HOME/minecraftserver1/ instead of $HOME. Then you just copy that server, change "minecraftserver1" to "minecraftserver2" and you are done.
And again you give absolutely nothing but spewing "YOU ARE WRONG". How about going through the placement? How it's set up to actually work like this? Path? Anything?
I've tried this with placing the jar as far down as /home/user/test/testtwo/mc/server.jar
and placing copies of the apropriate server.properties in every dir: /test/testtwo/mc/
Still it will generate it's files in /home/users
And there has been nothing done to the computer to alter such default actions.
So i'm afraid i must be too dumb to understand your incredibly helpfull explanation.
The servers are in /home/nick/BukkitPlugs/server and /home/nick/BukkitPlugs/server2, and there are no problems.
When running the server from a specific user in linux ubuntu, the files "regardless of where the server is run from" the files generated will be stored in the users "/home/user". Making it impossible to run two servers from the same user as they will both be looking for "server.properties" in "/home/user"
The problem has been "resolved" by creating a "/home/user2" and running the test server on the second account.
I've had absolutely no issues what so ever running my main mc_server on my dedicated MC_server computer running ubuntu, so i see no reason for attacking the choise of OS.. Which is perfectly fine for it's purpouse which is to run nothing but my servers. Which is has been doing for a long time without any problems at all..
I've tested the placement of the files on 3 computers running linux ubuntu. So if i'm the cause of it chosing to store it's files there, regardless of which subfolder it's being run from, then yes i would have to have made a grand error..
This is NOT a thread asking how to launch and run an mc server, how to add read/write/execute permissions to users on ubuntu, how to create a second server on windows... It was simply a question if anyone knew how to alter the second servers default path to files on Ubuntu. But so far noone has, so the "multi users" options has been taken in to use.
NO, it does NOT do that. The Minecraft server looks for server.properties in the PARENT directory. NOT in the home directory. You are probably doing something HORRIBLY wrong.
Proof:
One server has online mode set to off to make it more obvious that it isn't using the same config.
Should i get a gender change to not be taken for a complete and utter idiot in here? As stated before, linux ubuntu is checking for/generating all it's files in "/home/user" This is regardless of how the files and jar are moved around. This is not Windows, where the files will be generated/read from where ever you place the jar/exe. As said over and over, this is the action i need to find out how to alter, but i guess I'll have to look in to the "multiple active users" option given in an previous post. Thank you for trying.
As far as I know, there are no surgeries for replacing/inserting brains.
This post shows how little you know. Even a newbie knows that it isn't true. Relative paths are relative in Windows, Mac, Linux and BSD.
Alright that monitor is plenty fine then. 4GB of RAM will do you fine. I've only had issues with the OEM drives I've gotten in my old computers. I've never outright bought one so I wouldn't know if they perform any different. I'm sure they're fine drives for the price though. I didn't mean to discourage you. And the reason I asked is because I know people who the cheapest site they can to buy their computer parts (like the knock-off Chinese ones) to save a few bucks and end up getting junk. Just making sure so you don't get gypped.
Well, I never had any non-OEM Hitachi drives... And the OEM drives never misbehaved for me. One is still working after 9 years of usage without a single problem. And I always check for knockoffs :tongue.gif:
1) Just stick with the Gigabyte. The difference between them is the Gigabyte has a 16x and 8x PCI-E lanes. But the performance difference between 16x and 8x is virtually none. The ASUS offers 2133MHZ RAM when OC'd. Again, you won't see a huge difference and you'll never get the RAM you have now up that high.
2) Why underclock something that's factory overclocked? They tend to be pretty stable. Just run a few stress tests on it to see if it'll BSOD or anything and if it doesn't, keep it as it is.
3) The Hyper 212 is a pretty good cooler. The Hyper 212+ would be slightly better but I'm not sure what the difference between them is.
4) Everything will be fine under Linux. You shouldn't have any issues at all.
5) Running a 560Ti and 2500k on a 15.6" monitor? I don't like running mid-high end computers on monitors that don't put out 1080p quality, but that's just me.
A few comments on your build:
1. Get more RAM. 2GB will end up bottlenecking your build. 4 at the minimum and if you shop around you can usually find a 4GB kit fairly cheap. I know on Newegg there's a 4GB set from G.Skill that's on sale for $28.
2. I've never been a super big fan of Hitachi. I'd rather have a Samsung Spinpoint F3 or a Western Digital Caviar Black but since you're at the end of your budget, it should suffice.
I do have one question though, are you in the US buying from a Russian site? Because if so, you could probably get all of this (or at least the equivalent) in combo deals at Newegg for a few bucks cheaper.
At number 1: Thanks, I am going to stick to that.
At number 2: I just need the card to live for a long time. I want to downclock it and then overclock it when I need more power.
At number 5: I am getting a 19 inch monitor, with max resolution of 1920x1600.
At number one: I am getting two sticks of these.
At number two: I never had any problems with my Hitachi drives. I am just going to stick to them because they have a good value for money ratio.
No, I am in Belarus. Why would I buy from a Belarussian site if I were in the US? Seems illogical to me.

aka take the jars and natives from normal minecraft installation dir.

I wish this was reddit. Then I could just downvote you to hell.
