As of 1.8, Not Enough Items is now an add-on to the Just Enough Items mod and therefore requires JEI to be installed.

Throwing CodeChickenCore (obfuscated or dev) into the /jars/mods folder of your mcp environment will enable you to throw any other obfuscated mod into your mods folder and play with it in your dev environment.
Yes this means you can test your mods with NEI in mcp just by throwing NEI and CCC into your mods folder.

Developing with my mods is now even easier. Simply download the dev package, put it in /jars/mods and link it in eclipse or whatever IDE you use. For recompilation, just put all the dev versions in /mcp/lib as well.

CodeChickenCore

This is just a library of classes that all my mods use. You need to install this if you are going to install any of my mods.

Just throw this in the mods folder.

CodeChickenLib Formerly known as CodeChickenCore-Public, CodeChickenLib is a simple java library of utilities that I believe may be of use for other modders
The following public release contains some libraries that I believe may be of use to other modders.
It currently contains the following:

Model library cable of importing obj files
3D transformation library
Flexible and simple packet system
Colour helper classes
A few other misc helper functions

License
All source code in this package is provided to any modder under the following conditions.

1. The modder notifies me the first time they decide to use any code from this package in their mod.
2. All classes that are used must retain their original name and be MOVED to a DIFFERENT package containing "codechicken"
3. The modder may use as many or as few classes from this package and modify them as heavily as they wish.
4. Credit is displayed that the public can see. (You may or may not wish to include my name in your mcmod.info file)

Just move the classes you want to another package and include them in your mod, there will be no conficts or dependance on CCC if you put them in another package.

Other CodeChickenCore sources are released under the same conditions as above with the following exception: They need not retain their original names, and may be incorporated, in any modified partial form into your own classes. If they do retain their original names however, they must be repackaged so there are no conflicts.

If you want to make a mod that simply includes my version of CodeChickenCore as a dependancy (and don't want to package sources into your mod). Go ahead! There are no conditions on dependancies.

Different 3D modelling programs export with different coordinate systems. Minecraft uses a another strange one. Commonly try passing a new YZSwap() to the coordinate system parameter of the object loader.

Not Enough Items (NEI)

Overview

NEI is a successor to both Too Many Items and Recipe Book. It arose around the same time as Craft Guide when Alexandria and a few others on the IRC suggested that I merge both Too Many Items and Recipe Book to remove their greatest flaws, ironically too many items, or in the case of recipe book, too many recipies. Too Many Items was great, but the one thing it lacked was an easy way to search and sort your items. When you had a mod like Red Power coming along with 10000 items both TMI and Recipe Book were racking up the pages. Even if you don't want to use NEI for cheating in items, you will likely feel right at home with the Recipe component of the mod.

Detailed Information Recipe View
Recipe view contains 2 functions, Recipes and Usage. Pressing the recipe key (default R) or usage key (default U) while hovering over any item will take you into this mode. Once in recipe view clicking will bring up recipes and right clicking will show usages. The back recipe key (default BACKSPACE) can be used to go back to the last recipe and the Esc or Inventory key is used to exit.
Recipe view shows you all the ways to craft that item, be it with a Crafting Bench, Furnace, Brewing Stand or another custom crafting inventory (Eg Alloy Furnace from RP2).

Unlike Craft Guide when a recipe can be made using multiple types of the same item (Eg the different colours of wool or the different types of wood), the ingredients will cycle through the available subtypes. So the wool will change colour.

Usage mode shows you all the recipes that contain that Item.

And it shows shapeless recipes too.

The ? button will appear when the type of recipe matches the container you currently have opened. Eg. If you show shaped recipies while using a workbench.
Clicking on this button will return you to the main inventory wher you will see highlighted overlays in the slots prompting you of which items to put where.

Item Search Box
The Item Search Box is the black bordered rectangle at the bottom. Only items that contain the text in the Item Search field will be shown in the Item Pane. The search box must be clicked on to start typing. Right clicking on the search box will clear it instantly. It is not case sensitive. Any search terms will be saved and loaded when you restart minecraft.

The search box also supports wildcards * (any string of characters) and ? (any one character) as well as the complicated java.regex pattern matcher. As an example Bl?ck shows names containing Black and Block. Also ^Block would show items starting with block such as Block Breaker and block$ would show items ending with block such as noteblock or diamond block.

Item Subsets
The Item Subsets button is a dropdown menu containing many different grouped sets of items. Clicking on a set will show all the items it contains and right clicking will hide them all. Double clicking on a set will show only the items in that set.

Mods can use the API to generate their own tag sets.

Shift clicking on a set will type @setname into the search bar which will make the Item Pane show only items in that set.

If you rightclick on the Item Subsets button the buttons for saving subsets will appear. These function identically to the normal save states, renaming, save\load\delete, but they will save and load the items you have hidden and shown.

You can also add your own sets using the config file located in ".minecraft\config\NEISubsSet"
Enchantment Selector
By pressing the enchantment key (default X) you can bring up the enchantment selector gui. It allows you to put an item in the slot and select the enchantments and level that could be applied from an enchantment table. The level can go up to a maximum of X. Clicking on an enchantment toggles it on and off. (To prevent unnice bugs)The normal multiple enchantment conflict rules apply so you can't have fortune and silk touch together etc. Unfortunately due to space limitations some names have had to be shortened, Projectile to Proj, Protection to Protect, Bane of Arthropods to Arthropods. Enchantment names will only be shortened if there is not enough space. Eg Protection will be shortened to Protect if you set level 8 because VIII takes up a bit of space.

Trash
The trash can button functions in 4 ways. All operations apply both to your personal inventory and any inventory you may have opened (Eg a chest).
1. Click on it while holding an item it will delete the item you are holding.
2. Hold SHIFT while clicking on it with an item in your hand and it will delete all the items of that type in your inventory.
3. Hold SHIFT while clicking on it will clear your inventory.
4. Just clicking normally will toggle Trash Mode
Trash Mode
When trash mode is enabled any item you click on will be deleted. Holding SHIFT and clicking on any item will delete all items of that type.
Creative Mode
Clicking on the C button will toggle creative mode. This is self-explanatory. Simply change from creative to survival and back again. Note that on SMP servers this will change only you into creative mode and not the entire server.
Rain
Again another self-explanatory button, if it's raining right now this button will be enabled activated. Clicking it will change the rain to on or off.
Magnet Mode
The last of the toggle buttons. When magnet mode is enabled any items within a reasonable distance will pick themselves up and fly towards you. Items wont be attracted if they can't fit in your inventory though.

Utility Buttons
The 4 buttons with the sun and moon are time set buttons. They will set the time to Dawn, Noon, Dusk and Midnight when clicked. These will only advance time forward to not break machines relying on world time. So if you click the day button multiple times it will keep advancing the days.
The heart button will heal the player, fill the hunger bar and stop them burning if on fire.
Save States
There are 7 save states capable of saving your entire inventory and armour to disk. Right clicking on a state will let you rename it. The x Button appears next to loaded states will clear them. Save states are a global feature that can be transferred between worlds and even servers.

Options Menu
This is just the regular MC Style options configuration. It allows you to edit various settings and especially Key Bindings.

The first Button Toggles wether NEI is Enabled or not. If it's not enabled you wont be able to see anything except the options Button. The enabled state is separated for SMP and SSP.

The Cheat Mode button toggles between Cheat Mode and Recipe Mode. Recipe mode is for playing legit and just using the recipe book component. The save states and cheat buttons will disappear and the Item panel will not spawn items into your inventory.

Extra Cheats sets wether the Create, Rain, Magnet, Time and Heal buttons are to be shown.

Button Style switches between the default Minecraft Button Style obtained from your texture pack and the old school black box TMI style (showcased below)

Item IDs toggles whether to show the ID of the item in the tool tip. This will work for all items in your inventory as well as the panel.
This option will cycle between Shown, Auto and Hidden. Auto will show ID's only when NEI itself is shown and enabled.
This has the added use of showing you exactly how much damage a tool has sustainer. Eg the Sapphire Pickaxe below has taken 6 damage.

Save states merely sets weather or not to show the save states, self-explanitory.

If Item drops are disabled any EntityItems in the world will be deleted. So mining a block or dropping an item will give you nothing. Someone said they must have it for lag removal so I added it.

The KeyBindings all do what they say. Click on them and then press the key you want to change it to.

Mob Spawners
NEI makes all types of mob spawners obtainable in your inventory and place able. Any custom mobs you may have will also be assigned a spawner. The spawner item will show the entity inside of it just like the block. Hostile mobs will have Red names and Passive mobs Blue names. The bug in SMP where all mob spawners show pigs has also been fixed. Any users who have NEI installed (even if they are not Ops) on a server with NEI will be shown the correct mob.

Various Inv Tweaks
Ctrl clicking on any item in your inventory will give you more of it, just as if you clicked on it in the Item Pane. If you pick up an item and hold shift while placing it in a container then all items of that type you have in your inventory will also be put in alongside the placed item. Useful for transferring all your cobblestone to a chest in one go.
SMP
Everything that you can do in SSP can be done in SMP if the server has NEI installed. If not then NEI can still spawn items using the give command if you are an OP. Most of the features are only enabled for OPs.
Config
There are many options in NEI that can be configured in "config\NEI.cfg". Note that most of these are editable in the options menu.
Server Config
A configuration file will be generated in config\NEIServer.cfg containing various confiutation options for servers. The config file comments explain the functions. In short it allows you to assign certain functions to be used only by certain players. So you can select who can use OP enchantments etc. There is also a banned blocks section, any blocks that are banned wont show in a user's item panel. Bedrock is banned by default so connected users can't spawn bedrock, (unless you specify their name).

Extended API There is an extended API built in to NEI to allow mods to integrate properly. This is demonstrated with the RedPower module that provides Alloy Furnace recipes and RedPower specific subsets.

I am aware that there are many different crafting inventories out there. BTW's anvil, IC2 has a bunch etc. However I only use the Alloy Furnace from RedPower. Therefore I welcome modders who want to make small modules like the RedPower one for various other mods.

The source package should help guide modders through. NEI uses a modloader like config loading system. Simply call your configuration class NEI****Config.class and implement IConfigureNEI and package it with your mods. Any calls to NEI should be made from this class or subclasses. Your mod must not directly call any NEI functions or classes as that will make it dependant on NEI to function. Simply include the config and classes with your mod and it will be activated only if NEI is installed.

NEI RedPower Module

Due to Eloraam's kindness she has permitted this small module that will add features to NEI from RedPower. It will add the RedPower dropdown tags you see in the screen shots, Show all types of microblocks and redwires and add the Alloy Furnace recipe handler. Install it if you have RedPower.

Ender Storage

Overview

EnderStorage is a mod that offers a means to store your items in The END, causing them to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. All EnderStorage makes use of the magic of colors to link storage with its little piece of The END. Any EnderStorage with the same color code share inventory (even across dimensions). Currently there are two types of storage, EnderChest and EnderPouch.

EnderChests are a stationary type of EnderStorage. You can use dye on the wool pads on top of the chest to alter its color code. As an alternative, you can craft an EnderChest with three dyes to change the color code as well. EnderChests work as any other chest for the purposes of blocks that manipulate chests contents. This makes EnderChests an ideal way to transport items over vast distances in an instant.

EnderPouches are a mobile type of EnderStorage. You can use an EnderPouch on any EnderChest to change the pouch color code to match that of the chest. EnderPouches access the same inventory as their EnderChest counterparts, allowing easy access to your base resources right from your inventory.

As of 1.2, Using a diamond on the latch of an Ender Chest will move it to a seperate network for the player that used the diamond. This allows each player to have acceess to all 4096 frequencies without conflicting in SMP.

Wireless Redstone Chicken Bones Edition (WR-CBE)

Overview

In its simplest this is a mod that allows you to transmit your redstone state wirelessly. Even if you dont use redstone this mod could still be for you. Found an awesome landscape you'd like to mark, a cool cave to explore, or keep losing your way from base to base? Ever wished that compass pointed somewhere else or there was a way to mark things on a map. Well now there is. With the wireless addons component of this mod you can use wireless signals for navigation.

The signals are synchronised in a dimension called the Redstone Ether or REther. This dimension has no physical form and purely stores signals. It can be accessed by combining the Interdimensional properties of Obsidian, Glowstone and EnderPearls from the OverWorld, Nether and Ender with redstone to enter the RedstoneEther. There are 5000 different frequencies storing independent state, name and colour. Due to the dimensional nature of the REther signals sent in the nether will translate into the OverWorld and vice versa.

Differences from the original mod

Now you're probably thinking, I've seen a mod like this before. What makes this one so much better? For a detailed explanation read on. A simple list is below.

GUI

As you can see the gui has had some serious advancements.

Simple
Yes the simple gui is still there

Colour
A frequency in the REther can be made to resonate at a speed equivalent to the wavelength of a certain wavelength of light. You may set the colour of a frequency in the advanced gui by pressing the Phase Shift Button. The colour is a purely aesthetic effect used by the addons for identification in inventory or on the map. The slot above the Phase Shift button will cycle through the items in your inventory. By default the colours are the dyes and redstone is the resetter. Black and white cannot be used. If RedPower is installed the colour setters are the different coloured lumar and white is reset. Note: Colours are purely for easy identification on the addons. They provide no technical properties.

Naming
The much requested feature to assign names to frequencies is here. It's fairly intuitive, just look at the screenshot above.

Transmitter
The transmitter is simple. Power it with redstone and it will broadcast to all receivers on that frequency.

Receiver
A receiver will power connected devices if there are any transmitters currently active on its frequency.

SMP permissions
There is a fairly complicated permissions system in place for SMP management.

The /freq command can be used to manipulate various cofigurations. Use /freq help to learn what they are and how to use them.

It is advised that the Private Sniffer from the addons module is used for managing private frequencies, as this does not require the player to be an OP.

Frequencies are split into three ranges; public (0-1000), shared (1001-5000) and OP managed.
Public frequencies are there for anyone to do whatever they want with.
Shared frequencies are like public frequencies, however use of the private command a frequency can be locked to just one player.

These ranges can be changed through the freq set and get commands. Also the freq jam/open commands and the freq scan command can be used to allocate ranges of freqs specifically to certain players.

Anyone who doesn't have permission to access a freq will be shown a greyed out square on their sniffer. They will be unable to set any device to that frequency. However they can still use devices set by other players.

Bolt Effect

What more can I say, Epic huh.
The Wireless Bolt is generated by jammers and REP's. The bolt will "jam" any devices nearby preventing them from working. Transmitters will stop transmitting, receivers will stop receiving and any devices a player is carrying will no longer work. Dont worry the effect lasts for a limited time period. For some reason cognitive processing causes a detectable effect in the Redstone Ether and a the bolt will also seek out nearby mobs and players dealing damage in the process. Fortunately more intense cognitive abilities provides some resistance to the effect, so players wont take as much of a blow as that sheep over there. Wreak havoc on your fellow player's wireless contraptions or make a visually entertaining mob trap.

Addons

Remote
The remote is a handheld transmitter operated by holding right mouse. The frequency change GUI is opened by right-clicking while sneaking. If a remote is used on a wireless tile it will change the frequency of the tile to that of the remote, useful for setting the frequencies of multiple devices quickly.

Triangulator
The triangulator is essentially a wireless compass. It will point to the nearest transmitter on the frequency its on. The frequency change GUI is opened by right-clicking while sneaking. If there are no active transmitters in this dimension or you are using a remote at the same time the triangulator wont know where to point.

For the techy guys the triangulator doesnt actually point to the nearest transmitter, rather it adds all transmitters on the frequency based on their distance to the player in the ration 1/d therefore if you have 3 transmitters 20 blocks east and 1 transmitter 10 blocks west it will point east. So if you want to confuse someone using a transmitter to mark their way home put 5 somewhere nearby.

Wireless Sniffer
The sniffer is a device that can detect which frequencies are on and show them to you. Incidentally It will also show you which ones you dont have access to in SMP.

Private Sniffer
The private sniffer is an upgraded version of the normal sniffer. It has main purpose in SMP where you can click on a frequency that is shared to make it private. Private freqs will show as green.

Wireless Map
The wireless map is pretty self-explanatory. Any transmitters on any frequency will show as beacons on the map, even if they are not visible from the sky.
There is a green beacon in the desert, an orange beacon in the forest and three red beacons near the center. And yes I'm in a plane.

While it would be great to simply make your old maps wireless, problems with the map system make that near impossible. I may make a cartographer mod for copying maps and setting different scales.

Wireless Tracker
The wireless tracker is a throwable device that will stick to entities and transmit a signal. Use Sneak+Right Click to set the freq and then throw it. You can then use the map/sniffer/triangulator to track down your target at any time.

These guys will even stay stuck to players through portals and between logouts. However if an entity is 'unloaded' or a player is logged out the tracker will dissapear until the entity returns.

Trackers can be removed from an entity by pulling them off with a sticky piston or by melting the adhesive with fire. Once the tracker is no longer sticky it will spin like an item and can be picked up. Note that the tracker will quickly cool down and revert to it's normal sticky state.

REP
The Redstone Ether Pulse or REP is essentially the redstone version of an EMP. It is a throwable device that will generate the jamming effect apon impact. A second click with one in hand will detonate an aerial REP. The resulting energy wave will prevent further REPs from being thrown for a few seconds.

Logic

Formerly known as WR-CBE Redpower, this module contains the blocks of the mod. It requires ForgeMultipart, an open source multipart library to be installed and allows the tiles to be placed on walls and ceilings with covers and other multiparts.

Note the jammer is supposed to be disabled when powered.

ComputerCraft Integration
Wireless Recievers and Transmitters can be used as a computercraft peripheral when placed next to a computer. Use them like you would any other peripheral. The methods are setFreq(frequency) and getFreq()

ChickenChunks

Overview

As you all should know, the minecraft world is seperated into chunks. 16x16 areas that are loaded depending on how close a player is to them. If you have machines or plants or anything that does something in a chunk that is not loaded because there are no players nearby nothing will happen.

This mod adds a block called a chunkloader, when placed it will keep chunks around it loaded even if no players are nearby or even online. So now your plants can grow and your automatic quarries can run, even when you're not around.

What makes my chunkloader better

So you've seen a few of these things around before, Teleport Pipes has one, Railcraft has two. Immibis has one. Here's a short feature list.

Features:

Will reload chunks after a server restart
Works with frames
100% not buggy guarantee (I'll fix it if you find a bug).
External viewer for seeing the loaded chunks and making sure everything works.
Server owners can set the number of loaded chunks per player, per dimenion and globally.
Will load and unload mystcraft dimensions as needed.
Server Operators can set them to only work when a player is online.

Detailed Information

Simply place the chunkloader down and open up the Gui. It now belongs to the person who placed it and chunks that it loads will count towards their limit. You can only open the Gui if you own the chunkloader.

The radius determines the number of chunks to load around this one inclusive.
The shape is either Circle, Square, LineX or LineZ all of which are self explanitory. A radius 3 with square will load a 25x25 chunk area.
The number of chunks loaded is shown below the radius.
The total number of chunks you have loaded out of the amount the server has allowed you is shown at the bottom.

The show lasers button will show some spinning lasers that border on the loaded chunks for easily seeing if your blocks are in the loaded area.

ChunkViewer
Using the command /chunkloaders will activate the ChunkVeiwer if the server has allowed you to.

It will be centered on the player in the current dimension when first activated. You can move it around by dragging it with the mouse.
The Red blocks are loaded chunks.
The Yellow blocks are chunkloaders.
The Green blocks are chunks that are being held by a chunkloader
The Blue blocks are players.
In the top left the number of ChunkLoaders, Held Chunks (by Chunkloaders), Loaded Chunks and Players in this dimension are shown.
The numbers on the axis are the coordinates in blocks. The Horizontal is the x axis and vertical is the z axis.
Mousing over a chunkloader or player will show info about it as a tooltip.

You can see three sets of chunks, one around the player, one around the spawn point and some around a chunkloader.

The Gui will close if you leave the server.

Server Config Options
The server operator can set the number of chunks per player, per dimension and overall that are allowed to be force loaded.
The server can also add player names to a list to have chunkloaders only work when the player is online.
There is also an option to disable the automatic world loading for mystcraft dimensions if you don[/media]

1. Make sure you have a running FML/Forge installation. If you have that then I can rule out all prerequisites to this mod like failing to delete Meta-INF or install FML.
2. Tell us what happened. And if it's a visual glitch what you can do to cause it to happen.
3. Get us an FML or MultiMC log. You should be able to find FML logs in your .minecraft folder.
4. Post the information on the thread.

How do I search for a mod I want to download?

Look around in this forum for the thread belonging to the mod you want to install. If you can't find it, I suggest you google the name of the mod. For example, google "TooManyItems". You can also check out tutorials and reviews for the mod on YouTube; those often have download links in their descriptions. If you're googling mods, ensure you get to the right site - most likely the mod has a Minecraft Forums topic, PlanetMinecraft page or CurseForge page. If it appears in the search results, click your way to it. It should look something like this:

Notice how it says below the title in green text, "www.minecraftforum.net". This lets you know that the mod page is on Minecraft Forums, a trusted site for mod downloads. Make sure you follow the guidelines in the security section to keep your computer free of viruses.

How do I download mods from Minecraft Forums?

Once you've found the Minecraft Forums topic containing the mod, look for a "Downloads" section on the first post. Once you've found it, ensure you're downloading the mod for the correct version of Minecraft. Here's a look from the TooManyItems downloads section:

You'll see there are several versions to select from. The first thing you'll have to ask yourself is: which version of Minecraft am I using? When you play Minecraft, this will always show in the bottom right corner of the main menu:

In this case, I'm using Minecraft 1.7.2. If we look back at the TooManyItems' downloads section, we'll see that a 1.7.2 version is available, titled "For 1.7.2 non-Forge version". Click on it. You'll end up on a page with a blue bar up top titled "adf.ly" - please see the next question for a short introduction to what this is.

What is AdFly?

In the previous question, when I told you to click on the download link, you were sent to a page titled "adf.ly". You're probably wondering what this is, and how you deal with it.

First of all, I wouldn't recommend staying on an AdFly page a second longer than necessary, so I'll show you how to get past it so you can download your mod. Look in the top right corner of the page, on the blue bar. There will most likely be a countdown. Once it's completed, press the green or yellow "Skip ad" button in the top right corner.

But what is actually AdFly? AdFly is a link shortening service that, in addition to shortening links, gives link-makers money for people clicking on their links. For every 1000 clicks a link receives, the author of said link gets US$ 4.00 in revenue. Many mod makers uses AdFly to try and earn money for free through people downloading their content. Many mod authors prefer to use Curse, or have their own sites, for claiming ad revenue for their mods, while others do not put any advertisements on their downloads or sites at all. Several modders also use AdFly in addition to Curse or a personal website.

You're probably wondering why I told you to get off AdFly as soon as possible. The reason is the ads served through AdFly may in rare cases contain malicious scripts, which could potentially infect your computer with a virus or a trojan. You can read more about this in the security considerations section further down on this page.

What is Forge?

Minecraft Forge, often just called Forge, is a mod loader for Minecraft. It's fair to say that most mods use Forge to function. Mods using Forge have the major advantage of ease of installation - installing Forge mods is nothing more complicated than a simple drag-and-drop between two folders. Mods not using any mod loaders are called vanilla mods - they don't taste like vanilla, the term refers to the mods just being plain. These mods are much harder to install than Forge mods. It's worth noting that Minecraft Forge has very limited documentation, which can make troubleshooting difficult.

Forums user Botjoe helpfully recommends using separate profiles and game directories if you are playing with different versions of Forge. Please see the section on game directories for more help regarding this.

Minecraft Forge can be downloaded from http://files.minecraftforge.net/.

What is LiteLoader?

LiteLoader is a mod loader similar to Minecraft Forge, but is much smaller and provides more basic support. Mods for LiteLoader are as easy to install as mods for Forge - a simple drag and drop between folders. LiteLoader is not used by very many mods, and some loaders are now unsupported.

How do I install Forge?

To install Forge, you should head over to the Minecraft Forge download page, linked above. Choose the Installer option for the Recommended release:

Run the installer when it's been downloaded. When the installer opens, you'll see a menu with three options: "Install client", "Install server" and "Extract". Select the "Install client" option and press OK. Forge will now install itself.

How do I install LiteLoader?

To install LiteLoader, head over to the LiteLoader forum topic (linked above) and look for the download section. Download the installer and run it. The installer will open with a few options; "Install LiteLoader" and "Extract LiteLoader". Select the "Install LiteLoader" option. If you also have Forge installed, check the "Chain to Minecraft Forge" checkbox and press OK to install.

How do I install Forge and LiteLoader mods?

Both Forge mods and LiteLoader mods are installed in the same way:

Start by downloading and installing Forge/LiteLoader (see above).
Download the mod you want to install.
Then, navigate to your .minecraft folder. (See further down on the page for a guide.) (Note that it is possible to use different folders for modded Minecraft - please see the game directories section for more help on this.)
Look for a folder named "mods". If there is no folder named mods, create it.
Copy the mod you downloaded into the mods folder.

To play Minecraft with the mods installed, select the Forge or LiteLoader profile in the bottom left corner of the Minecraft launcher, then press play.

How do I install vanilla mods?

Installing vanilla mods is difficult if you don't know how.

Start by downloading the mod you want to install.
Then, navigate to your .minecraft folder. (See further down on the page for a guide.)
Open up the "versions" subfolder and find the folder with the Minecraft version you're installing the mod for. Ensure you select the right folder!
Make a copy of this folder and name it something like "1.7.2_mods" (I'm using Minecraft 1.7.2, hence 1.7.2 in the name). Try not to use spaces in the name.
Open the folder you just created and rename the two files inside in the same way you renamed the folder: 1.7.2_mods (it must be the name you chose). Do not remove the .json ending on the file that ends with .json! The two files should now look something like this:

Open the file that ends with ".json" in Notepad or Notepad++.
Look for a line near the top starting with "id":

Save the file and exit.
If you're on Mac or Linux, you can skip this step. Download and install 7-zip or WinRAR (I prefer 7-zip - it's free!).
Open the file that does not end in ".json" with 7-zip or WinRAR. If you're using Mac or Linux, use your system's archive manager to open the file.
Open the mod zip file you downloaded using the same program (7-zip, WinRAR or the system archive manager).
Select all the files in the mod ZIP file by pressing Ctrl+A. Then drag them over to the 1.7.2_mods file.

Delete the folder META-INF, with all contents, from the 1.7.2_mods window.
Close both windows.
Open the Minecraft launcher.
In the bottom left corner of the launcher, press the New profile button.
Name the profile "1.7.2 mods" (or something else descriptive).
Select "release 1.7.2_mods" from the "Use version" drop down box.
Press Save profile.

To play Minecraft with the mod(s) installed, simply select the "1.7.2 mods" profile in the bottom left corner of the launcher, and press Play.

How do I install vanilla mods in Minecraft Forge?

You may have thought that following the procedure above would've worked, but if you do it with Forge specifically, Minecraft will crash. Here's how you do it.

Start by downloading and installing Forge (see above), if you haven't already.
Download the mod you want to install.
Then, navigate to your .minecraft folder. (See further down on the page for a guide.)
Open the versions subfolder, and look for the Forge directory.
Follow steps 9 through 15 in the Installing vanilla mods section just above this one.
In the bottom left corner of the launcher, press the Edit profile button.
Check the box labeled "JVM arguments".
Enter the following in the JVM arguments box:

-Dfml.ignoreInvalidMinecraftCertificates=true -Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true

Save and close the profile.
Play Minecraft! Your mods should now be installed on top of Forge.

Please be aware that when installing vanilla mods in Forge, you'll likely overwrite some of Forge's functionality. This could cause mod conflicts and crashes that would usually not appear in a healthy Forge installation.

How do I find my .minecraft folder?

There are three ways to find the .minecraft folder:

Method 1: Via resource packs menu

Open the Minecraft launcher and play the game.
Go to the Resource packs menu.
Press the "Open resource packs folder" button.
Go up one level.

Method 2: Finding it manually

On Windows: Press Windows+R, type the following:

%appdata%\.minecraft

and press Enter.

On Mac: Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. This is your .minecraft folder.

On Linux: Navigate to ~/.minecraft. This is your .minecraft folder.

Method 3: Using the launcher (recommended!)

Open the Minecraft launcher.
Click on the "Edit profile" button in the bottom left corner of the launcher window.
Click on "Open Game Dir" in the bottom right of the window that appears.

Can I use another folder than .minecraft for my game data?

Absolutely! If you want to put your game files in another folder, then, in the Minecraft launcher, click on the Edit profile button in the bottom left corner. Check the box next to "Game Directory" and insert the full path to where you want your game files (mods, saves, screenshots, resource packs etc.) stored. Click on Save Profile when you're done.

Note: You may have to move your existing "saves", "mods", "screenshots", "resourcepacks" and other relevant folders from .minecraft to the new directory you've chosen if you have already played with .minecraft as your game directory previously.

Forums user Botjoe helpfully informs that using multiple different game profiles with different game directories can be very useful if you like to switch between multiple versions of modded Minecraft, or different collections of mods. For instance, having one game directory called something like "FTBInfinity" and another called "The1.7.10Pack" for each of those modpacks will stop you from accidentally loading the wrong world in the wrong modpack, corrupting the world. If multiple players play on the same computer, changing game directories can also be useful to ensure that the players do not play on each other's worlds by accident.

Important: What should I watch out for when I download mods?

There are a lot of traps that are easy to end up caught in when downloading mods:

Never download any mods without having an anti-virus enabled.

Never run EXE files claiming to be mod installers.

VirusTotal

Only run installers for mods you have used before and trust, and only run them if the installer was made by the mod creator himself.
Do not run installers for any mod if the uploader has few posts and/or very few mods exist for the targeted Minecraft version.
Topics on Minecraft Forums with positive feedback from other forum users are probably trustworthy.

Also beware of which sites you download mods from. Always download from the official download page. The sites listed below are well-known mod hosting or linking sites which can be trusted, except if the above criteria make you worry (i.e. executable files have been seen on these forums, although very rarely, and in those cases, be extra careful).

If the mod's official topic or page links to another domain for downloading, chances are that it's safe to download.

If the site you are downloading from is on this list (link) , do not download. The sites listed there are known for stealing mods from the original authors and may even be infected with malware and viruses.

Will mods work even if they're not made for my Minecraft version?

The simple answer is no. The reason why is because Minecraft's source code is encoded. Minecraft is encoded through obfuscation; that is changing human readable names of things into seemingly random series of letters, like "Minecraft" may be changed to "azd" and "GuiNewChat" into "bav". In mods' raw source code, there are references to these obfuscated names. The problem is that these names change over time - there are new names for everything with every new release.

If the mod source code references "bav", it would correctly reference "GuiNewChat" (the chat window) in the Minecraft version it's designed for. However, because the obfuscation pattern changes between each release, in another Minecraft version it might reference "GuiButton" instead (Minecraft buttons). This causes problems because the mod's source code doesn't automatically detect that it's referencing the wrong thing.

If you frequently play different Minecraft versions, it's recommended that you separate their game directories so that you do not accidentally load the wrong Minecraft world into a different version of the game.

What is MCP, and why is it so important?

MCP is short for Mod Coder Pack. What this does is help mod developers develop mods for Minecraft easily. If you look at the question above this, you'll see that the Minecraft source code is obfuscated. Developing mods without MCP isn't impossible, rather very difficult, and few want to do that work. What MCP does is that it acts like a translator, translating the meaningless, obfuscated names in the source code and turns them into names modders can understand.

MCP is also the tool that decompiles Minecraft. In terms of software, decompiling is reverse engineering - it is turning the actual program back into source code form. Modding compiled code directly is probably the toughest form of programming there is - compiled Java code is called bytecode, and bytecode is simply a long series of bytes. An example of bytes could be "�ˣ�#M6u�" - now that isn't proper Java bytecode, but is what one could expect from looking at raw class files if opened in Notepad. Being able to understand that and edit it is a huge feat in itself. MCP also does the work of recompiling the decompiled source code back to bytecode form, so Java can understand it.

MCP is written in Python, and is being developed by Searge, ProfMobius, IngisKahn, Fesh0r, ZeuX and R4wk. The community also contributes mappings from obfuscated names to human readable names for MCP. Their official website is http://mcp.ocean-labs.de/.

Learning a few is easy enough. Learning many (like, how to render text on screen, adding textures to blocks, making interactive GUIs, etc.) is a whole other story. De-obfuscating the source code is like translating a text from one language to another. Learning some words is easy, learning many is hard. And this is where MCP comes in. MCP is short for Mod Coder Pack, and functions much the same way as an automated translator. It de-obfuscates everything for you, and as an added bonus; from 1.7.2 and on it also categorizes the code for you, based on what purpose each code file serves. To use a metaphor for this, I could say that it picks up a pile of 1000+ Latin documents from the floor, translates everything to English before sorting it similarly to like in an archive. This lets you have something that translates Latin to English, so you can work on it, and then back again to Latin when you're done, instead if you having to learn Latin to perform corrections in the documents.

There's also another, very good reason to not learn the obfuscated language yourself. Between the Minecraft versions, the obfuscation changes, so you'll have to learn what everything does all over again. If the new pile of documents is in Afrikaans, I doubt you'd want to learn that new language when you know you're going to get your hands on a translator to do the job for you in not too long time.

If you wonder where Forge comes in play, I'm coming to that now. Forge is a so-called API. API stands for Application Programming Interface, and as you may guess from its name, it's used to make programming easier by providing a set of functions to take use of. One such function would be adding a block, or a dimension, or a mob to the game. It allows the mod to add things in a very easy way and with much less messy code than it would have to if it was to add blocks without Forge. It also allows putting all the code for adding things into a single class file, meaning it is easier for the developer to keep track of what he's doing. In vanilla Minecraft, not only would he need to use multiple files, he also needs to keep track of which class files he's modifying.

Another very neat function of Forge is that it lets you use many (up to hundreds) of mods at the same time without either one conflicting with each other. If you had several block adding vanilla mods, they all probably would need to edit the block registry file. As the code of multiple mods can't easily be merged together, only one mod would work and most likely the game would also crash. Finally, there's another reason to use Forge above vanilla mods. There used to be plenty of vanilla mods up until Minecraft 1.6. From there on, the game required a whole new launcher to play properly, and this launcher introduced a new way of keeping track of the Minecraft versions. Installing mods was no longer as straight forward as putting the class files in a jar file and deleting a folder. Now, you had to make copies of the Minecraft version you needed, actually change something in a code file and add a new profile to the launcher. Forge mods still just have to be dropped into the mods folder in .minecraft.

How do I solve ID conflicts in Forge 1.6.4 (or earlier) mods?

After installing a new mod, you might have some ID conflict. Your added block might do something different or crash when you interact with it. It may also crash directly at the Mojang screen. You might even see a mob doing something another mob should've done (this is rare, and when it happens you rarely can fix it). All these types of behavior are caused by ID conflicts.

Everything in the world of Minecraft has an ID. Blocks have, items have, entities have too. At the Mojang screen, Forge creates a list of those IDs from the game and the mods. If two things have the same ID, Forge will crash because it doesn't know what to do. If it is an item ID conflict, Forge simply overwrites the block. If it is a block ID conflict, it crashes at the Mojang screen. If it is an entity ID conflict, Forge overwrites the mob.

You can scan for ID conflict by opening the log file which name is 'ForgeModLoader-client-0.log', located in the .minecraft folder. You can open it using Notepad, or another text editor. Then, use the find function by pressing Ctrl+F. Fill the 'Find' box with 'conflict'. Do the search. You may find some. It will look like this:

You can see that Forge overwrites the blocks. If they were items, you would find a crash report after the above lines.

To fix it, go to 'config' folder and find the questioned mod's config file. Look for the numbers above (in this case, 1269). Change it to something else. However, the ID lists have limits - if you put an ID outside the limit, the game crashes. Block ID limit is 128-4095, item ID limit is 128-65535. Also, ensure you don't choose any ID listed on this Minecraft Wiki page, as those are reserved by the game itself (things like gold ore, enchanting table, dirt, etc.). After you change the number, save and exit the config. Run the game again. If it still conflicts, repeat the process.

Mods should start using IDs from 256 and higher, to prevent problems with Minecraft itself. Mods for Minecraft 1.7 and above do not typically suffer from ID conflict issues.

What are IDs, and what are they used for?

In Minecraft terms, IDs are unique numbers or letters used by the game to identify blocks, items, mobs, dimensions and other things. Think of them as barcodes on cardboard boxes: All the boxes look the same, but whatever is inside them varies. So how would you know what's inside? You could place barcodes on the boxes. Scan the barcode, and you'll know what's inside the box. That's pretty much exactly what Minecraft does. The game finds what seems to be some kind of block, and then it scans its ID and figures out that "hey, that's a grass block".

IDs in Minecraft consist of numbers and letters. From Minecraft was released in 2009, the game used numbers to keep track of what things were. Everything from 0-255 was a block, everything from 256-65535 was an item. Dimensions had their own system, 0 representing the overworld, -1 the Nether, and 1 the End. Monsters and animals shared their own system too. This system was used until the release of Minecraft 1.7. From that version and on, blocks and items weren't referred to by numbers, but by actual names. Gold ore, for instance, used to have the ID '14', but this was changed to 'minecraft:gold_ore'. Air, which counts as a block, used to have the ID '0', but this was changed to 'minecraft:air'. Not only did this make it easier for people to remember the IDs of things, it also made it possible to install mods without having the notorious ID conflicts.

The mod I installed crashes my game! What should I do?

What to do in this case depends on what kind of mod that's crashing. If we're speaking of a Forge mod, then first of all ensure there are no ID conflicts. You can identify ID conflicts and fix them by looking in the solving ID conflicts section. If it's a vanilla mod (one you install straight into the Minecraft jar, ensure you've deleted the META-INF folder in the jar file and that you carefully followed the instructions in the installing vanilla mods section. If you're confident that you've done it right, then check the following:

The version of the mod you're installing must correspond to the Minecraft version you're playing.
You must have installed all dependencies (like Forge, and various other mods) required for the mod to work.

If you're sure about this too, you should report the crash to the mod developer. For more information on how to submit a useful crash report, please see the next section. Remember that there is no way a mod developer can fix a bug if there is no one around to tell him that said bug even exists at all.

How do I report a crash in a useful way?

If your game crashes, you'll be returned to the Minecraft launcher. There should be a crash report visible in it. One important thing to remember is to include this in your post. Posting this in plain text on your post will take up a lot of space, so it is highly recommended that you wrap it in spoiler tags. How, you ask? Well, in your forum post, follow this template:

YOUR CRASH REPORT HERE

This will display a small rectangular bar with a Show button above, so people can check out your crash without it covering the entire page automatically.

If there, for some reason, are no crash reports, go to the Developer Console tab of the launcher and paste that in instead.

Another thing you should (must) post is what triggered the crash. What were you doing prior to the crash? Did you craft a block using red sand and compressed iron ore on a green crafting table, and after that, you placed it on the ground and broke it with an obsidian pickaxe? If so, then say so. There are often several ways for a specific thing to happen, but there may well be only one specific scenario where a crash occurs. The developer will figure out if it only happens with the procedure you gave him, or if it's a generic crash that happens with, say, any kind of pickaxe.

When the developer responds: If he is asking of you more information, then give him that information. Don't just tell him that "no it just doesn't work pls fix!!!!" because that won't help him at all. How do I downgrade Minecraft?

In the Minecraft Launcher, look in the bottom left for the profile selector. Press New Profile. Name the profile to something understandable (like, "1.6.4"). Then, select the preferred Minecraft version from the Minecraft Version dropdown. Save the profile. Whenever you want to play this version, simply select the version from the profile selector and hit Play.

Warning: Do not play worlds you created in a newer version of Minecraft when you play an old version. Doing this will cause serious problems and may result in unfixable damage to your entire map. This will cause you to permanently lose all your work. Playing newer Minecraft version maps in older versions of Minecraft may also cause the game to crash. If you frequently play different versions of Minecraft, consider setting up different profiles in the launcher that use different game directories, so that the worlds from one version cannot be accidentally loaded into another version of the game.

So I'm going to try to go over most of new underwater content from the recent snapshots, this includes the new ocean monument, hostile mob, blocks, sponge, and enchantment. Spoilers ahoy! Don't read this if you want to learn these things yourself. This is all new as well, so there may be inaccuracies.

Ocean Monument

Deep Ocean biomes will now generate a large dungeon structure at the ocean floor. It will look like this with maybe a few small variations:

The dungeon is made up of variations of Prismarine and Sea Lantern. Hostile mobs named Guardians constantly spawn here, as well as a variation of them that acts somewhat as a boss.

This dungeon is nearly impossible to explore on hard mode if you don't prepare for it. It's hard to see, navigate, and fight. If you enter this dungeon with a certain mini-boss mob present, a ghost image and sound of the Guardian will appear on your screen, and the Mining Fatigue debuff will be applied to you for 5 minutes, making you unable to break any blocks for the duration with normal tools. Sponge and gold blocks can be found as loot, but I'm not going to spoil where those are.

Guardian (Hostile water mob)

Jeb's overall goal with this mob seemed to be nasty to fight, and that's exactly what it is. There are 2 variations of this mob, a regular one that commonly spawns in the dungeon, and a beefed up mini-boss variation named the "Elder Guardian".

Both have 2 methods of attacking. One is a ranged "laser" attack that auto targets you when in range. The other method is draining your health when you attack, as they have the Thorns attribute built into them, but only when their spikes are sticking out. Normal Guardians have 15 hearts, Elders have 40. The laser attack will target you and charge up before dealing damage. This can be interrupted either by swimming out of range, or attacking the guardian before he can finish charging it. If on land, it will constantly bounce around and look for water to jump back in to.

The Elder variation follows the same AI, but has more health and higher attack damage. He will also apply the mining fatigue debuff on you if he is present and you enter the dungeon. Mining Fatigue is set at tier 3, making it tedious to break blocks (An Efficiently V diamond pickaxe takes about the same time as Obsidian to mine Prismarine, not counting if you're underwater) He will constantly reset the debuff every 60 seconds until killed, meaning you have to kill him before you can take any loot (Or mine the gold blocks for 30 mins...), or drink milk during the few seconds it wears off. There are a total of 3 elder guardians.

Both mobs have unique drops(Prismarine shard, Prismarine crystal, sponge), most of them are used to craft the new blocks.

New Enchantment

There is a new enchantment in the game that will help in fighting these dungeons. It's called "Depth Strider", and is applied to boots only. This basically makes swimming in water and walking on solid ground underwater a lot easier. You move much faster and are able to sprint. At tier 3, walking on the ocean floor is about the same speed as walking on the surface. These gives better mobility when exploring the dungeon.

Prismarine

This is one of the new blocks found in the water dungeon. It has a coral like appearance. The special thing about this block is that its texture changes overtime into different variations. (Gfycat video by The8Bitmonkey, via reddit)

Sea Lantern

The name pretty much describes it. It's a lantern that appears underwater, giving off light in the dungeon. It's basically glowstone with a fancy ripple animation and looks nice.

Sponge

The beloved sponge that has been in the game for years finally has a use again. Along with a texture change, Sponges will now clear all water source blocks in a 5x5x5 radius. It however does not clear flowing water, so source blocks outside the radius can fill the water back in. After absorbing water, the texture will be darker and water will drip out of it. It can be picked up and put in a furnace to dry it up. If an empty bucket is put in the fuel source slot (after you begin cooking), it will be filled up with water when the sponge finishes cooking.

It has no crafting recipe and can only being found in the water dungeon as a drop from the guardians, or randomly placed in the dungeon itself.

I'll try to keep this up to date as more things are found.

The Idea:
I thought how to make in-game ores better, we could add Ore metadata on an actual block. This would work as followed: Block; as smooth stone spawns and it's given a metadata of an ore block that would normally spawn at it's place. Imagine a cluster of andesite and the world generation would cause a single diamond ore to spawn at the surface. instead of replacing the block with an ore block, the andesite block would spawn with diamond ore metadata.

Just to clarify:
"Ores in every block" isn't literal. The point is to change the mechanics of how ores work so that they don't need a new kind of block for every ore type. Instead the ore is stored as metadata for the block. A possible extension of this is the ability to put ore in ANY block, however chances are ores would still be restricted to stone blocks like stone, granite, diorite, and andesite, instead of just in stone only.

One could do an entire creative page just for ores (or rather just for ores in stone, granite, diorite, and andesite)... or they could add a shift right click function to the pickaxe in creative mode that allows the player to cycle through different ore values (or other metadata for other kinds of blocks), or leave the creative inventory menu as is and just modify the appropriate console commands to account for ore in blocks other than bland grey stone.

How ores will be handled for mining:
Regarding mining these modified blocks the stuff is very simple:
Mining speed: Block.
Drop and tool tier requirements: Ore.
Iron, gold ores will be dropped as raw non-block items.

Example:

Dirt with coal metadata

- Coal ore can be mined with a wooden pickaxe upwards.

- Preferred tool for the dirt block is a shovel.

Result

When you use a Wooden shovel (or better), the block will break at a normal speed and it would yield only the coal chunk.

Otherwise it would break and nothing would drop.

Obsidian with Iron ore metadata (note that obsidian is generated after the world so, no obsidian-infused ore would exist naturally).

- Iron ore can be mined with a Stone pickaxe upwards.

- Preferred tool for the obsidian block is a diamond pickaxe.

When you use a Stone pickaxe (or better), the block will break at a normal speed and it would yield only the raw iron chunk.

Otherwise it would break and nothing would drop. (note: when you use a stone pick, the mining speed would be equal to that of a normal obsidian block)

Personally, I believe the WoodWolf's design sounds really dumb. I mean, the bosses we already have are a dragon and a three headed monster who shoots explosive skulls at you. What do you have? A gigantic wolf made out of wood. The main thing I don't like is what it's made out of. Wood. Wood is the most basic material in all of Minecraft that can be used to craft tools. That really isn't threatening.
