One of my favorite things about Minecraft is being able to build my own base. Anybody know of any other base building games that maybe aren't RTSs? Or if it is an RTS, one where the main idea is to build a base. Maybe some games where, once built, you have to protect your base? Or maybe not.
Any Base Building games will do.
Garry's Mod comes to mind, of course. But I've played that plenty and I'm wondering if there are any others that I may have forgotten about or don't know of.
The first time I ran through snow I expected to turn around and to see a trail behind me. I would kind of prefer to just have the snow tile disappear for a while, but foot prints would be fine too.
And I don't feel like making a new topic for this and its related so... Snowballs!!! And less important, Igloos!
Notch seems to be tossing around a few ideas on what to do with resource blocks that aren't collected, but I don't remember him mentioning this idea. It's pretty simple so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already proposed this.
If a resource block (the small block produced when you break a block by digging or TNT) is not picked up withing a certain amount of time, it turns back into a normal block wherever it lays.
Well the hunger bar was just a possibility. I know Notch said he did not want to add one. I really don't think I want one either. I think of the Stranded game (specifically the Garry's Mod version) a lot when I play Minecraft.
I tried the newest update recently, found a single sheep, and immediately built a little fence around him so he couldn't get away. Then I was hit by a surprise attack and nearly lost all my health, so I went off searching for some pigs. I found a few and thought, "Man, I wish I could bring one or two pigs back with me and have a little farm. That might be fun." But I can't so I killed them and went back to my fenced in sheep only to find he had disappeared.
I know that Mobs disappear if they are left alone too long, but I really think that Mob spawning, disappearing, and general handling should be changed. I only bring this up because farming will not work if Mobs disappear when left alone.
ANYWAY, to get to the main point of the post...
Farming in Minecraft: How it could work and why it'd be fun
If farming was implemented in Minecraft I would only expect it to do a few things Minecraft doesn't already do. Hopefully that would mean it wouldn't be that difficult to implement. I'll break these things down into two parts: Plants and Animals.
Plants would be Crops you could plant, grow, then harvest. You would start with one seed, say a kernel of corn, and you plant it. Growing would consist of waiting, or a watering can could be implemented if you wanted to take it that far. Next thing you know you would have a cornstalk that would behave much like the flowers or mushrooms. Harvesting would produce something you could use to plant more corn, eat for health, feed to your animals, craft into something, fill your hunger bar (if there was one), etc etc. An additional twist could be added if Pigs, Sheep, or some other docile Mob could eat your Crops, forcing you to protect your crops.
Animals would be Livestock you could gather, possibly feed and breed, then slaughter. If tools were implemented, one could create a net to catch Pigs, Sheep, and possibly other animals. You would catch them and collect them in a fenced off area you created. Once you have them collected there are a couple of things that could be implemented. Maybe you could be required to feed them. How cool would it be if instead of Mobs dieing randomly of loneliness, they died of hunger. Livestock Mobs would eat plants to survive and Enemy Mobs would eat Livestock to survive.
It would also be cool if you could somehow create more Livestock once you have multiple animals collected in your farm. This "breeding" idea is the part that I can't seem to come up with a simple, balanced way to suggest it would work. Maybe after enough pigs are in an area for a long enough time, a tiny baby piglet would appear. It would take a long time for this to occur. Eventually the piglet would turn into a grown up pig. Maybe there could be a maximum number of pigs that could be on the map or in an area so there aren't too many mobs. IDK.
So that's how it could work, now here's why it would be fun...
It would give you something to do, something to achieve. Once you have some Crops going, you would have to make sure some animal doesn't come in a eat them all up, leaving you nothing. Same thing with Livestock, gotta protect them from Enemy Mobs.
Even if one or two ideas were added it could really add a lot to the game. Some of it probably wouldn't even be that hard. Take Corn for example. You would just need to create two new 2D sprite-based block, the cornstalk (Can you create a sprite-based block that's 2 blocks high? A cornstalk would look weird shorter than that) and the cornstalk sapling. Now you already have the code for the tree, take that and instead of having a tree sapling turn into a huge tree, you have a corn sapling turn into a corn stalk. Destroy a cornstalk and it gives you one (or occasionally two) corn kernel for planting and one corn cob for eating. Bam! Done! Half of Farming is already in the game.
So we all know Notch is back from Indonesia, but I haven't heard any news on Minecraft since he's been back. I know he was sick, but I was wondering if anybody has any updates, maybe from IRC. I know he said he was going work on "multiplayerificating" survival mode.
I agree that mob spawning as it is right now is a little annoying.
The quickest and easiest change notch could make is probably the first suggestion: have the spawning of mobs restricted to a distance away from the player. However, once survival goes multiplayer, a survival server with a lot of players might prevent this method from working well.
The torch idea sounds reasonable as does the mobs can't spawn on planks idea.
Either way, no one likes seeing the enemy just appearing out of nowhere right in front of there eyes.
I also kind of like the idea of portals that mobs spawn out of, kind of like in Gauntlet Legends. Maybe those could pop up around the map, and send out some mobs to go exploring. Maybe you could destroy the portal. But I definitely like the idea of some mobs wandering a little more.
Anyway, I'm sure Notch will come up with something.
With Lua support coming to Minecraft my interest in learning Lua has been reinvigorated. Does anyone know of any good tutorials or resources for a person with little programming knowledge (besides html lol) who is interested in learning to program in Lua?
Minecraft doesn't appear to be that graphically intensive, yet is seems to ask a lot of my system. I'm guessing its because its Java based, so I bet there's not a whole lot that can be done with that.
But I thought I would through the idea of making the game run a little more smoothly before the game gets too far along in development and it's too late to change the base code.

... patiently waiting.

I like the idea of the hang glider. I was thinking of a jet pack but and hang glider makes more sense. A parachute might be nice.

The idea I was thinking was this:
but the OPs idea is just as good, if not better.
I really wish this mechanic would get implemented as it would make harvesting resources, building, and consuming health so much easier.

Jeez what a rant I went on...
What do you guys think?

They seem much nicer.
