No, it would be terrible and it won't happen.

    Main reason:

Minecraft is made in Java, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 don't support Java, do you want the game to be started all over again?

You'd be surprised how easy it is to port things from Java to C++ or C#

I also fail to see how it would be any more "terrible" than it is already. You need to explain that part.

    Sure they do.

Seriously, try to climb a ladder with a 1 meter gap in it. It's not that hard.

Oh well now we're just getting into pointless arguments (if you can make so many other things out of stone, why not a compass?)

Anything less than Iron is simple to get. I wouldn't be against having a golden compass if the golden one then pointed to your spawn and the iron one pointed north, but thats just me.

    On an unrelated note...

I have that exact same chess set...

I have it set up in my bedroom right now, I do two moves a day. I think White is winning in position though, I need to step up my game.

Yeah I'd be fine with Smooth stone too.

I mean you have to find Red-stone so by that point you should be swimming in anything around Iron or less.

Essentially what I'm getting at is that if you are "close" enough to your spawn point that the direction the iron compass points REALLY changes as you wander around, you aren't nearly far out enough to get lost, and simply making your way to the surface and following the iron compass will always get you back to familiar ground.

But otherwise, it functions like a normal compass, always pointing in one direction.

Exactly, they do 2 different jobs, the one that points north is not the same purpose, but still has equivalent value, and even GREATER value in pretty much any situation that isn't just "trying to find your spawn point". Therefor it should be made of an equivalent or greater valued material, not a lesser valued material.

No, you see, when above ground, you simply look which way the clouds are flowing. So this compass is only useful underground.

And when it comes to exploring, often times you go out, you found what you needed to find, and you just want to head back. Knowing where you spawn point is becomes far more valuable than knowing where North is.

This compass fits ONE niche: knowing North underground.
The Iron compass fits Two Niches: knowing where your spawn point is above AND below ground.

Since you can also learn to navigate your caverns by knowing the direction of your spawn point, sometimes knowing direct North isn't really all that different than knowing your spawn points location.

As such, I'd value a compass that points North a heck of a lot less than one that points to the spawn point.

I don't think it has any more value than the iron compass - I'd say even less. Why not make it out of wood?

Then the quicksand didn't kill you. The tide did. :tongue.gif:

Now, I understand quicksand doesn't work like you usually see in fiction, where it drags you down until your death. But that's usually what people think when they mention quicksand, so.

You mean I also can't get out of it by repeatedly trying to jump? And that in some semi-rare cases it will actually drag me down to a secret cavern underground with a doorway leading to many coins?

I guess I'd like some examples where you think this would make things more fun. It would really help to make this idea more appealing.

Examples of why this would be fun:

    - It would add a REAL use for food. [...]
    - It would add some CHALLENGE to the game, since it's [...] weak right now.
    - The game is a SURVIVAL game... therefore food should be a key element to said survival.
    - It would force the player to make decisions (just like real life) as to forage for a day, or risk running out of food because they would rather go dig a big hole in the ground.
    - I would have more space in my chests since the would not be crammed with useless food.
    - There would be more point in using minecart chests etc, or making underground store houses, to ferry food down to the underground areas.

Not examples. I was looking for explanations where it would be fun. You just described that food does nothing so we'll force a new mechanic into the game so it has more of a use. Your idea has no more merits than the buff concept.

Then I don't understand what exactly you are looking for, Sol couldn't have explained it any better. Can you think of any examples where fending off zombies is fun because right now its just a chore. (Or at least I can call it a chore by your definition of a chore).

Some other successful games that featured both the Fight/fend off enemies while acquiring food include:
    Dead Rising
    Pac Man
    And Mad Max

Is that what you were looking for?

I agree - I've seen an entire herd of cows and sheep all fighting over a 2 block island out at sea.

These scenarios are cute but a little ridiculous. How could 5 cows sustain themselves on such little grass?

You do a quick search for the thread with either the thread title or something that you know is in the thread. Then you find it, you open it up. When you add your post, it'll bump it back up to the first page up top.

I'm not bashing your thread or anything, I'm just being nitpicky. Don't bother raising the other thread now, this one is here.
