When I first saw that picture, the only thing I didn't see and figure out what it was was the beacon in the background. Man, it's been forever since 4J got my skin crawling (in a good way). I'm now so hyped and this was just the first pic! Booyahh, 4J. You guys are awesome! I wonder if they're gonna bring anything forward since they're going for 3 major updates in a single TU. You know, if we keep going, we might actually catch up with the PC version, since we're soon to be at 1.6.4, and the PC's at 1.8. something. This could be a major milestone for the consoles.
EXACTLY what? I didn't specify a date... I just said it shouldn't take 3-5 times as long as it would take to code on 1 console just because there was 5 console platforms that had to be coded for. To make the claim that it will is just because it is on 5 different platforms is erroneous at best and completely wrong at worst.
I appreciate the support, but to be more accurate, I code more for fun than I do for a living. Although I have formal education in Computer Science and even though there is some coding involved in my work, my work itself is largely technical support of various communications products (including, but not limited to, computer internet/network connectivity).
It is my dream to code for a living, and games design would be something that I would love to do... but for the moment, I have bills to pay and a steady job at the moment.
My coding is done largely on the side for the time being.
How ironic that I'm just a sophomore in high school and I'm taking that exact class next semester. Personally, there's so much I want to do that I'm not gonna settle on a single career. Before this world ends, I wish to build at least one rollercoaster, create at least one videogame, and delve into the world of genetics, just to name a few.
Also, you were right about me not knowing what a beta tester is. I just thought of someone who works at 4J when I saw that. Rookie mistake, though I'm pretty sure I'm getting out of that stage. I mean, I'm already mining stone, just look at my little profile to the left there, I've been playing Minecraft on the xbox since PISTONS were brand new, and I've been reading (not with an account, mind you) for, what, like 2 years now? I've been around for a while, just not with coding, or gameplay testing.
Added new biomes, Sprinting, Creative mode, Hunger bar, Pulling back bow, parrying, new food items, new lighting system, new world generation system, strongholds, villages ect.
OK, THAT makes a lot more sense. When I saw 1.8, I thought of the update that just came out for PC. Sorry about that.
Maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake here... but where was it confirmed that the next Title Update would be TU20? It seems that TU18 would be the next Title Update in line, especially since we are currently on TU17.
I'm pretty sure that it's TU17, as the last update named by 4J was TU16. Yeah, I noticed as well, I just never got to mentioning it.
If there is enough open space to work with, you can set pre-determined flight paths like the Ender Dragon uses... but then you run into the same problem if the player builds obstacles within that pathing area.
Ahh, yes. I forgot to put player activity into the equation.
TU 12 added new generations. A new biome. New mobs, texture pack support, tons of features from 1.4 and a whole re-done mob AI system.
The only game changing update in this 3 update cycle is 1.5 and that only changes redstone mechanics. The Wither and Wither skeletons. A few little tweaks to the nether/bats and witches, Horses. The rest of it is adding items/blocks. Is you think about it, it's smart they are adding these all together because separately these would have been small/weak updates to standard.
There is no new Biomes/or major changes to game mechanics. No new world spawn systems, no new support systems. It's just basically another update.
1.8 took so long in 2012, longest update we had to wait for I believe (until now ofc) but that also changed the game completely. I don't believe this will take nearly as long.
You also missed fireworks and beacons, which to my knowledge will have quite an impact for the game. Also, didn't 1.8 just have ocean monuments, guardians, elder guardians, endermites, trading changes, shaders, and slime blocks as major features (I could be wrong as I don't play PC)?
More obstacles and constrained areas would increase the need for adequate collision detection and handling... not decrease it.
What I meant was an underground temple or dungeon that contains a large arena like space where you'd fight the dragon. How would that work out, with less obsticals than a standard cavern and idealy more space? Sorry, I'm not an expert in coding, though i might by May, as next semester I'm taking a class on 3D animations and game design, which to my knowledge will require an extensive look at coding.
IF you could fit the Dragon into a boxed in region, which stays the same regardless of the orientation of the Dragon, then it would mesh well with the Minecraft Architecture in how the block-centric game is designed... but that would mean staying confined to the same block orientation for all orientations, this wouldn't be an issue if the dragon only moved on perpendicular paths only in the 4 cardinal directions (plus vertically up/down).
And granted... there are (creative) strategies that could be employed that could make up for that, but it would be vastly different than how MOB's are handled now.
For example... taking an idea from the Monster Deaths Thread, if there were different MOB templates to account for the different angular orientations of the dragon's block-outline, as well as when it is on the ground with its wings folded, then transitional box outlines could be used for better obstacle avoidance and collisions.
Other wise you would have to use a huge area that the dragon just couldn't seem to go into for no real 'apparent' reason from the player's perspective.
Could that possibly be fixed if they spawned only in very large underground temples or dungeons that generate with a new world, or would that just cause more problems?
I'm still thinking it over, trying to balance personal pros and cons to the idea. Just a few quick questions: what happens with mobs like creepers, ghasts, and silverfish? Also, would this also extend to passive and neutral mobs or what?
Not gonna happen, my friend. Like I said in that other thread, if there's a specific mod that you think would work well on the consoles, make a suggestion of what you'd like to see on the consoles. Also, you might want to add your own little creative imput into the suggestion, to make it a little more unique.
We're not expecting it "early". We're expecting it at reasonable times I think.
No way this is gonna take 5 months. I think February at the latest.
Though, if you remember TU12, it was announced mid-May, there were so many people predicting late June to Early July, and it wasn't released until late August to early September, about three months for one major update, and this one covers three major updates, and I'm seeing people saying that it will only take a month and a half, so I think my prediction is justified.

Wait, when and where did I say that again?
