I'm not too sure what all you guys are complaining about. The value-added to this service is quite clear. Scenario:

a domain name I could purchase myself ranges from like...8 to 12 dollars annually (from a reputable company), and some go much higher.

Yeah as you noted this service isnt really intended for the heavy user but rather the person that wants a hostname redirection without long term commitments, hosts, etc. The undeniable reality of the matter is that the majority of servers wont be there in 3 months.

hell, the fees the registrar gets charged amound to $7.52, and they have to make a profit on top of that.

You also need to pay to run the DNS server / get DNS hosting.

Of course, with this service you don't get the domain, just a subdomain, but you don't pay as much either :biggrin.gif:

dyndns is free because it's advertising for their paid products. personally I'm not convinced that, to use one of their examples, "irc-tf2.gamereip.com" is any better than "irc-tf2.ath.cx" (a dyndns domain name), but it's certainly priced well.

Hey, thanks for your thoughts. You are right the domain name preference is subjective. I plan on adding more features to make the GameReIP name more community oriented (generated signature images to show online offline status, and server lists). I have been a tad busy lately so my work is limited and might go slow but I will try my best to get these out ASAP.

So....I have to pay for you to purchase my domain name? And pay for DNS services that are otherwise free?

Hey we havent implemented custom domain names yet but the plan is if it were to be implemented the plan is something like follows (you pay 5-8 dollars for the domain, the price depends on how generic the domain is. We wouldnt want dannyJohnsonsminecraftserver.com) we buy it with whoisprivacy and you have unlimited access to it but we are allowed to resell it as well.

None of this is set in stone but we are taking all suggestions.

    Hey,

Couple things, first off I did mention in my post that there are other DNS services out there and I am certainly not denying that. However, we are built directly for the gaming community. Professionalism in private servers is very important

hey, this is really cool, and I wish you well (it's a fair price, places like dyndns only do it for free because for them it's advertising for their pay services) but in my eyes you lose a lot of credibility by claiming they aren't professional (especially when your website has such gems as "URLs converted to IPs", considering your hostname-to-IP services, which is nothing to do with URLs)

Moving on, you should consider adding a simple webservice API, so that people can update automatically without going to the website - some folks with VERY unstable IPs (the kind that change every day) could benefit from that. If you made it so the IP could be updated using simple tools like curl etc. then, for example, you could ask if it be included in MineOS.

It could be as simple as "send username, password, hostname and IP* as HTTP GET parameters to this (https, natch) URL and if it you get status code 200 back, it worked"

    * and/or let them leave the IP blank, in which case you pick it up directly from the sender's IP info, so they don't even have to look up their internet IP

Hey thanks. No I never meant that DynDns is unprofessional, in fact they probably have people who professionalize in DNS services. However, I think myserver.dyndns.com is less professional than myserver.gamereip.com. Also the hostname thing was discussed earlier and yes am aware that hostname != url but to the average joe URL is easier to get by than "hostname".

It is in my plans (probably next weekend) to create an API of sorts to update the URLs (been kinda busy since college just started). So yeah by next week or 2 we should have a new URL to choose from, a api to work with and a referral system. The HTTP get functions shouldnt be difficult considering the current modifications work with that too.

Thanks for all your thoughts! And I am all ears if you have more.

    Nice template bro.

Haha thanks. Front end design is not my thing at all. I was actually looking for someone to help me with it at first. However, backend php is my thing, and with this website I was sure thatd be o.k since 90% of the important stuff is back end. One thing to note however: the website didnt come with any forms, jquery ect so that stufs me :tongue.gif:

Hey not yet. We are want to accumulate a long list before me make it public. Plus some more programming has to go into that.

Everyone here is neglecting the fact that there are people who are hosting servers places where they cannot control/access their routers. Examples of this include: Workplace, College Dorms, Public places, etc, etc.

Arguining this anymore would be childish and fruitless.

Yes, that's nice and all, but your average consumer for said service will neither care nor understand. I'm assuming that's more or less what he is trying to get at.

Thanks. My point exactly. I even anticipate more confusion if the header was something along the lines of "GameReIP: Turn your server IP to a hostname" ...

Just a comment: you should stop saying that you are giving people a URL.

That's not correct. Your service is giving out host names. A host name is just one part of a URL.

A URL is a fully qualified Universal Resource Locator, and it includes a protocol, a host name, and a path and file name. http://www.google.com/index.html is a URL. "www.google.com" is a host name.

Same discussion as we had with the VPN thing... laymen's terms != geek terms.
