I have the exact same problem, the only way i could stop it using so much to the point of where it became out of memory was to download a cracked version of 1.0.0 - Not endorsing that by the way.
That was my only fix, also i tried to reboot my computer to try and get more free ram for minecraft but still had the same problems.

Also, this only started happening after 1.1

I didn't want to start a new thread, and I don't want to hijack this one but I may be having the same problem. I noticed at first that after about 20-30 minutes of play my fps would randomly drop to 0 every few seconds then the game would crash. I reinstalled java, updated to java 7, tried allocating more and less ram to java, and tried it with and without optifine. I thought it might be an optifine bug at first. Today the idea hit me that it could be a memory leak, and sure enough when I ran Minecraft with the task manager open I noticed that when the lag spikes happened java was using about 2gb of ram. I have 6gb, but my OS is 32 bit so I can only actually use 3gb (dumb of dell to sell it like that, and dumb of me to buy it). This has only happened to me since Minecraft updated to 1.9.

    hi5!

really? geographically speaking, in terms of distance in the United States that's definitely pretty far, but i don't know anything about relationship between distance and lag.

    same continent should be fine
EDIT: with good (paid) server hosts

yes, i tried with the drivers i have used for the most time, with the newest, and the newest beta drivers, ALL downloaded from the manufacters, i never have used windows update

I can find anywhere in this thread if you've posted your bitness?
Is your OS 64bit? If so are you using 64bit Java? You should.

After that, if it still happens, you should update your video card driver.
These symptoms can be caused by a memory leak in the driver, which no amount of Java heap tweaking can fix.
And these bugs seem to be more prevalent in the 32bit compatible drivers.

A better video card would help and so would more RAM I have 4gb and it runs with no lag(and works).

I have literally the most expensive video card without going into professional (wich cost like... 4 times more?) ones in my city... (or at least it was like... 6 or 8 months ago) And when i bought it i used to run Minecraft with more than 60fps with a 256x256 texture pack
It is a 1GB GDDR3 Nvidia EVGA GeForce GT 430 (when i bought it, all the better cards were giant, double slot cards with GDDR5)

Don't? What happens if you use the .exe? Without telling us what is in it everyone talking about ram is pointless.

Do read the thread again... I already said that it doesn't change anything if I use it or not.

Simple (relatively) fix to all this. Ive had this promblem on many computers and this is the only way that had consistently worked. Java works in a way that uses consecutively more memory until it runs out and has to garbage collect to free it all back up again. Its usage is in a constant state of flux. Now Minecraft only really needs about 256MB of ram to run vanilla and usually more like half of that. Textures take more obviously. Now what you need to do is limit the amount of RAM Minecraft can allocate. There are several ways to do this but I think the best and most reliable way is a custom launcher. Go here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/841722-glsl-texture-extension-support-mcmemory-and-more/ download the McMemory tool and create a custom launcher with about 256mb ram. That should do it.

Didn't work, java still manages to use more than 1gb of ram. And actually i used the .bat file to limit how much ram minecraft used.

Best thing to do is updating Java to version 1.7_01. Next you could try a fresh installation of minecraft(nuke the .minecraft folder except your saves and redownload via the launcher.)
actually, i used to use java 1.7 but i changed back to 1.6 since the problems started after i installed 1.7... not long before they started (they didn't start exactly when i installed 1.7)

    ~40-50 USD for 4gig DDR3.

However, throwing more RAM will not fix this issue. There is a memory leak somewhere that will still appear if you have 4gig or 48gigs of ram.

You say it used to run a lot better? Did anything at all change? Driver update? Windows update? Anything, something had to change as memory leaks don't just appear in a system working normally? Did you add/remove a mod?

I haven't done anything that i think might have cause this, i only updated drivers and made major changes in my computer after this problem started, as i had no reason to do it before

Well, after re-reading his first post, and looking at his pictures I noticed something: 128x128 texture pack. That would definitively increase ram usage. Also, What mods are installed, as they can also increase memory usage. But if you change you texture pack to the default, that will defiantly decrease ram usage and allow you to play longer.

actually it's a 256x256 and it was to show that before it used to run a lot better (read the whole spoiler)

What version of java are you running? There may be a memory leak that's present.

If you have more than one version, uninstall both and reinstall the latest, if you have a newer version, try the older version.

Readyboost won't solve an issue like this. It's not intended as a RAM replacement for working memory.

As for virtual memory usage, that's not really a concern, it's when your physical ram and maxed out and you're Vmem starts climbing you start to see issues as then you're attempting to use the harddrive to work as RAM, which is thousands of times slower than ram. Think nanoseconds versus milliseconds.

Are you passing any memory flags to Java to increase available ram? If so, does this happen if you don't use those?

i've tried running minecraft normally AND telling it how much ram it should use, no change
also i tried reinstalling an older version of java (6) since this problem started after i changed to 7, the problem still persists

yes is see. if yo have windows vista or higher you can use ready boost, wich takes any old thmbdrive and makes it act as extru ram. you can also tell java in the command line to use less memory to prevent the memory loss.
actually i run minecraft with set ram (768mb) and i DO use 4gb of ready boost (trough a third party program, i use WinXP) and i have more virtual memory dedicated than normal in the hard drive, but like i said java itself uses 250mb of virtual memory (which i have like...6gb?) so i don't really get why this happens
(also my graphics card has 1gb DDR3) this all just seems weird seing how i can play skyrim in ultra without problems

id like to beleive that if you have 2 gb, and that you cant use all of it, because widows, or wht ever os you have needs at least 720 megs, so i think you should get some more memory. You can also limit java andd how much it uses.

Minecraft is a game running on java with lwjgl... it likes to use memory.
actually... if you actually read my post you'd see that before playing minecraft i had 1.5gb free (i was using only 500mb before opening minecraft) and the problem is not that it runs slow, but that it ends up taking more and more ram the longer i play at an anormal rate until my computer almost freezes
