I just wanted to let anyone shopping around know that these guys are great. The server doesn't lag, but I haven't had a chance to really stress it. The support is helpful.

Which OS is t3h b3$t
I would recommend CentOS because it has the least overhead and unneeded processes.
I'm running a Minecraft server on an Amazon EC2 micro instance (I know, just wait before you tell me that the CPU isn't good enough or something.) I usually only have 2 people connected and it usually works great, but sometimes I get random spikes of lag even with just myself connected. It will eventually, usually pretty quickly, go back to normal.
I've noticed that in top, I have the CPU mostly idle and the steal time doesn't normally go above 1%. I also am not maxing out the RAM. I've noticed that there are hosting sites that rent Mincraft servers with less RAM than Amazon's micro instance, so this should not be an issue for only having a few people online.
What is a problem, however, is that the wait time jumps up during my lag spikes. What might be causing this? Is it something that i can fix?
You need to log in (not play in offline mode) to connect to the server. This setting can be changed, but I wouldn't advise it because that means other people can log in with your name and then they'll be op.
You don't have to set up an exe file. Are you running Linux or Mac OS X? In that case, you need the jar version of the server. The exe only works on Windows.
I can connect just fine. Have you updated to 1.5? Have you tried connecting lately? Maybe they hadn't updated and they have now. They were running Bukkit 1.4 and now they're running vanilla 1.5 until Bukkit is updated.
You need to give us some more information to help you. Is this your server? Is it hosted on your home computer or hosted in a server you're renting? Is it someone else's server?
How can I change the hostname of the server? I tried editing the /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname files and it didn't work. I even tried using filetool.sh -b.
I'm running MineOS in VirtualBox and transfers through SCP are super slow. How can I fix this?
Transfers in SCP are as fast as any transfers that could occur....http/ftp/etc...
If youre experiencing slowness, is it because youre trying to move entire 'world' directories? Moving thousands of files, on the other hand, is exceptionally slow no matter what protocol.
If youre moving a world, you should be dealing with the 'archives'
If youre importing a world, you should be dealing with the 'archives'
No matter what OS, linux, mineos, windows, moving/copying thousands of files would always be unbearably slow.
Right, so I should upload an archive and then extract it?
I'm having an issue. I have the port forwarding set up, but the connection gets refused when using my public IP address. I downloaded the official Windows server and changed the settings on my router to forward the port to my computer instead of the virtual machine. It worked that way, but when I forward the port to the virtual machine and run MineOS it doesn't. Is there a setting in MineOS or VirtualBox that I need to change?
