For example: if a mod adds a new wood type, Forge can make that wood work with other wood recipes, like making a chest. BUT, the mod author needs to use Forge's compatibility to make this work. Most mods I've played with are compatible in this way.
One of the best ways to get into modded MC is to use a already created modpack. CurseForge is a great place to search for modpacks. Feed the Beast (FTB) also creates some really good modpacks.
To play Minecraft, you first have to buy Minecraft. Launchers like ATI (and MultiMC, CurseForge, etc) only create Profiles, then those Profiles are loaded into the Mojang launcher to play Minecraft.

Try making a Profile for older versions of MC. Maybe the PC can't handle newer versions.

Using shaders does put a strain on most PCs. How old is the PC hardware?
The amount of memory you allocate to MC is also very important. Never allocate more than half of the PC's RAM.

Have you tried making a Profile in the Mojang launcher first, to make sure MC is running correctly?

ALWAYS make separate Game Directory folders for each Profile of Minecraft you play, especially if your using more than one API (Forge, Fabric, etc).
