It does for the non-WOM/archive/whatever one of the super-servers are. That's why some people put blocks of 9 or so people on it. Too many people can lag it to death.
Those servers run on dedicated VPSes. They actually use more resources than vanilla(multi world and the increased features)
@Server admins: The README.txt says to ask server admins before joining your bot, so do not give out the rights to running a bot on your server easily. Do not take unauthorized bots lightheartedly, because they can do damage after a period of time.
I havn't tried this out yet, but if it isn't there, have bots on join announce that they are a bot.
Notch is generating terrain on the fly, but I have reason to doubt that he keeps the generated terrain, only the differences that players have made to it for performance reasons.
Raquizzic2, your map would require a HDD larger than the worlds largest HDD therefore is technically infeasible.
(Worlds largest harddrive as far as I can remember was a single 10TB)
Compression becomes more feasible in this situation. Heck, Notch could just regenerate areas that the player hasn't modified much. I wouldn't mind if the map changes a bit here and there in the unexplored regions.
