There are so many mods out there at this point and as someone who is also working on a new mod, I think one of the goals for any up and coming mod creator such as ourselves is original ideas and content.
Usually a google of your brand of firewall e.g. "BitDefender" and a "how do I?" will suffice in a youtube walkthrough of how to add exceptions or what have you.
This topic is definitely redundant as comparing Terraria and Minecraft. Maybe compare Terraria to Starbound or something but comparing a 2d side scrolling ADVENTURE game to a 3d open world sandbox game is always going to be moot point.
If it's saying "Connection forcibly closed" My first thought is it's an issue with the router firewall, though if your port forwarding from your personal computer it could also be the windows firewall or 3rd party if you have one installed.
Sometime in alpha or beta, I remember it cost $11 dollars to support and get the full version upon release but you could download a beta or demo-ish copy for free. Not much content so I quit (Sadface), lost my username etc. Re bought the game(for a whopping $30 this time around >.<) in 1.5.2 days now that modding was in super full swing and been addicted to epic fully automated bases of beauty and glory ever since.
Mods generally don't wreck things unless they're in a poorly put together pack. If you're using unstable mods then it's no ones fault but your own. But that still doesn't make this thread make any more sense
Master the bow, make a nether fire bat spawner and practice killing them from like 40 blocks away, they move sparactically and make for good target practice. Also play on hardcore mode ALOT! You want to play it enough you go from scared of everything, to cautious, to afraid of nothing but wise enough to still be cautious.
and P.S. Kill people, tons of them. Act like you're at your local store and they're having a huge sale on MURDER! lol but for reals just practice alot.
I think a great deal of us are taking the point here to far, this list will be very helpful to a lot of the kids or less "net savvy" people who play Minecraft. Granted there are those of us that know there is rarely such a thing as a dangerous website if you use a bit of net sense with what you download, click, open etc... This list is not meant for us so no need to disparage the idea here as it will do a lot of people good I'm sure.
Nope currently no issues, but you can always check if something at Mojang is down at either here for the official status or here which is a nice page made by some nice people and my preferred way.

Fences as well are unspawnable, my favorite is crafting tables though, can hold back lava and doesn't spawn monsters to boot!

The launcher should have most snapshots but as well you can always goto MCversions to get pretty much anything ever put out.

This link should handle the basics of mod loading, but as well always follow each mods instructions as occasionally they can differ but rarely.
