Hey, I have a computer from 2006 and I run minecraft just fine...on small render distance. I can go further up, but it tends to choke sometimes.
Minecraft is mostly CPU based, depending little on the graphics card. But your CPU isn't that bad, actually.
I have an intel Centrio Duo processor that's actually runs at a lower rate than yours.
I'm not sure if it's because you have a 64-bit system or whatever... I do know that some games don't play nice with 64-bit systems. Like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, for example. Some people it works, some not.
Take a look at your running processes in the background, see if anything is hogging CPU power.
man, I really loved playing on this server. A lot of the OPs were friendly, shade, I'll tell you that! (I even played with you when you were on)
