So I finally got my linux version of minecraft back up!
After I redownloaded java and talked with my friend, he asked if I had openAl installed.
openAl is basically a video/audio component minecraft needs (OpenGL in this case), in order to run. I was having the black screen appear without it.
If you're on linux, you're in luck! I can help.
Applications > Software Center > [search for "openAL"] > then find the packaged named "Software implementation of the OpenAL API", or libopenal1 > install it
If you're on windows or mac, do a search for openAl.
Is the code java based? Or is it a different language? Im just curious, because I asked my teacher if I could code mods for minecraft in Computer Math!
I already got rid of my java files and reinstalled it. I dont want another person telling me to get windows, I already have it, it cant run it (I know the reason why...long story). Im just looking for anyone out here in the forums that use linux as well, so we can potentially benefit others. IMO, with linux, I have a better understanding of processes etc. idk
I think I messed up my java in linux. I have The Ubuntu distro, version 10 (11 is ugly as heck)....a there any linux users that can help me get Minecraft back up? Its the black screen problem. Ive alerady reinstalled minecraft, forced update, installed java....is OpenAl needed? Please help.
I overwritten my 1.0 copy of minecraft w/ 1.8
That didn't work. methinks its java that screwed me over. I'll try again later.
Thanks for everyone's help!
nah, i love linux.
I can get it for windows, but I'm too lazy to update my drivers for it. It's staying on linux.I can try uninstalling minecraft and java, and reinstalling it. Luckily, I have map backups...
For some reason, minecraft won't load properly. I get to the launcher perfectly fine, but then a black screen.
What's weird, is that it worked yesterday too...

But openAL is also for windows, so you might want to check it out. Just in case.

Is it possible, that this is the reason that I'm getting a black screen when I log into minecraft thru the launcher?

Anyone linux savvy please tell me what synaptic packages you have installed for java?
Thanks

So I deleted the .minecraft folder and any other traces.
Installed it again.
I could log in, but then BLACK SCREEN.
pewp
It's java. I can't even run the online version. That's weird...

What do black screens usually associate with, besides mods?
Edit: I do realize that the Disk Janitor for ubuntu deleted some packages required for Hamachi...possibly related w/ minecraft.
Edit 2: reinstalled hamachi...that didn't work either. WTF.

Other than that, I only take my new wolf pack of about 10 just to explore for fun.
