Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
Actually thats a good idea! Every player gets an id for there account and when you ban a player on a server it bans there id so even when they change there name they can't access the server that there banned in :3 - To post a comment, please login.

1. user buys minecraft on steam
2. in order to play multiplayer the the user will have to be linked to mojang accounts website and proceed to sign in with steam to verify that you bought minecraft on steam there you will be able to choose a minecraft user name
3. you now enter your user key into the game and it is saved to the steam cloud services so you don't have to repeat the last 3 steps of this again
Basicly what happens on step 3: So, you logged into the mojang accounts website and sign in with steam. What happens is first the mojang servers verify you bought minecraft on steam and for you, the mojang servers generate an account key that is then given back to you. Once you enter the key in the game, the game asks the mojang servers for authentication to this account key, then the server returns with whatever token information the game needs to login to your mojang account via the generated key, the information is now LOCKED to your steam account and the key cannot be used again.
Now all you have to do after downloading minecraft through steam is play the game, no more having to enter keys again! And would even work on offline mode without internet. Since it's all saved in steam cloud for you. The mojang servers have now assigned your steam a UUID for your the minecraft username you choose after verifying steam purchase.
5. you can now play minecraft even with users who did not buy mc on steam
Questions you might ask:
Note: This questions are based ALL on an idea. None of them are possible right now, just coming up with ideas how things could work!
Q: How does multiplayer work?
A: You would have already have minecraft steam purchase verified with the mojang servers and the data for authenticating that would be already stored in steam cloud so you have a UUID assigned and no need to login since your logged in with steam.
Q: What if i change my steam username?
A: That would not change your minecraft username, however it should be possible to link your steam with a mojang account to manage settings like that. On the mojang website. (I'm talking about for when mojang actually does allow name changing.)
Ok i think you guys get the idea!
Yes this is a very complex thing, but perhaps a possibility since mojang was in talks about putting mc on steam. I really wanted to get my idea out.
