I have nothing against BTW staying in one version of MC. All I really want is a terrain with more variation, and I'm hoping 1.7 brings that. If it doesn't, I wouldn't care if BTW never upgrades again.

    You're in luck: http://www.sargunster.com/btwforum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7784

I may be in the minority here, but I could actually get behind not updating versions.
Having a stable version to platform off of means less work for FC, fewer worries about whatever vanilla wants to add next, and adds a lot more stability to the code base when it comes to people making add-ons. Not to mention, the less time spent updating the more time FC gets to spend on RTH.

As for the potential confusion of newbies, I think anyone unable to tell the difference between 1.5.2 and 1.7 is suffering more from a "Problem Between Screen and Chair" than any technical difficulties. Due to the new "mod to any version" changes in 1.6's launcher, many older and abandoned mods could begin seeing a resurgence of popularity, and it could once again become possible to have modding communities based around their favorite "version" of the game, picking and choosing what features best fit their vision.

Thank you, for accepting my idea.

I'm sure it'll be implemented as well. True story.

Admittedly, stair-elevators for when your Steve gets morbidly obese and is riding a pig around would be pretty choice :)

It really cements the placement of booties and earrings in the tech tree don't you think?

On topic with some of FC's previous rants about the game industry, I recently took some time to play a new MC-in-space knockoff recommended to me by a friend. True to form, they seem to have copied many of the worse aspects of the game, having recently implemented a confusing crafting system that can make any item, although all items can still be bought by the omnipresent "shops" that can be found within a 5 minute time frame. Thus, after an hour, I had all the material I could possibly want for building using the shop, and the crafting system felt entirely pointless as a result. Within another hour, I'd effectively created a ship nigh impossible to defeat in battle and capable of devouring an asteroid in five minutes.

The purpose behind this story, is that I came to realize the difference between what people think of as "fun", and the true meaning of "fun". Sure walking around and killing everything is alright for a little, but "fun" isn't winning. "Fun" is really what happens when you're challenged, without the difficulty being so easy as to be trivial, but not so hard as to be beyond your abilities. All too often, people will associate fun with the former, since in order to do the latter, it requires actual effort be put into the game.

Back when I still used the Forge mods, closing in on a year now that I've been with BTW, I spent maybe a week charging to the top of the tech tree, so I could make anything I wanted once that happened. However, once you can do that, it stopped being fun, since although I could make things, there wasn't any point to it anymore.

In BTW, when the tech tree was extended, I found myself finally able to settle down a little, and actually enjoy my place in the tech tree. No longer would I hoard resources and live in a tiny hut, but instead I got reacquainted with actually building things again. Since this was before the hardcore modes were added, I poured my surplus cobble into endless construction projects, creating a world-spanning network of cobblestone skyroads.

Since then, the hardcore mode additions have thrown wrenches into previous worlds, but added new challenges as well. An earlier me would have raged, feeling all my previous work invalidated, but now I look forwards to whatever FC throws at us next. Spending three desperate nights trying to escort a single chicken home, knowing you'll lose everything if you fail. Carefully managing amounts of a material that used to be so common I'd fill in creeper holes with it to save on dirt. These are far more fun than watching as yet another TNT mountain blows "yet another even bigger hole in the ground", or kicking back for an hour as your solar farm turns "survival" into "creative with an in-game installation sequence".

In essence, I'd like to simply once again thank you for not only making this mod, but for continuing to improve upon it, and keeping the contact you do with your audience. Although when I first signed up on the BTW forums I was at odds with you, since then I've not only come to trust your judgment, but look up to you as a both a designer and a man. With each update of BTW, I've found I've grown a little more, not only as a player, but as a person as well.

I hate it when people wrongfully accuse others of what they did not do. If I had called someone an idiot and said, "Just joking", THAT is what you are accusing me of doing, which is an entirely different approach then what I did.

I seem to recall a certain post a while back in this thread, in which someone deliberately insulted FC and his work, then when called out on it simply replied "I was just joking" in an attempt to save face. Given this thread is often filled with suggestions like that, and no indication of it being any form of joke within the post itself, it seemed to be another case of attempting to "save face" on a poorly thought out post. Regardless of whether you were indeed joking or not though, it really is a sort of issue that comes up in many places.

Why is it so many people seem to be saying "it's a joke" to absolve themselves of any responsibility for what they just said? "Jokes" are fairly obvious as such, not poor attempts to cover yourself when you screw up.

"details" are rather important when they undermine a key focus of the mod, not to mention the sheer number of builds that would be broken by such an addition. As I recall, FC prefers not to break existing framework when it's not based on exploits, and it would be far too damaging to have random zombies start digging through the walls of your trap whenever you go to check on it.

Believe me, I've considered this idea myself before, given it's pretty low hanging fruit, but the cost of doing so and making it work properly far outweighs any benefit from the long period of time that would probably be needed to implement it correctly. He's also working on wrapping up the final touches of the mod, with a self-imposed deadline, and this rather lacks the mana oozing from its hooch to be considered at this time. Which would you rather have, these zombies wrecking mobtraps, or whatever new and interesting feature he decides is worth adding next?

The problem with zombies using tools to break blocks is it would make mobtraps impossible to get working properly for any extended period of time (just look at vanilla endermen). Considering mobtraps are one of the core considerations of BetterThanWolves, I fail to see how that would help.

I've only just started on working my way back to spawn again, but I'm having a little trouble deciding on how to build my road aesthetically. If anyone could post examples of their own, I'd me much obliged.

Say, out of curiosity, do "structurally modified" creepers still drop records? Could make acquiring them a far easier task.

Have you ever messed around with MC Edit?

You can find the answer for yourself by using these quick and easy steps:

    1. Think about FC's stance on cheating.

    2. Think about the relation of 3rd party programs to the goal BTW strives to accomplish.

    3. Think in general, this is a pretty good one to answer most questions like this.

Having read the new changes to HC spawn this morning, I wasn't quite sure what to think about it and decided to wait a while before forming any kind of opinion. Seeing as I don't play co-op, this doesn't affect me too much, but I thought about it and finally had a thought.

Although it's expected the initial reaction would be a knee-jerk negative, this adds meaning not only to death, but also to the partnership. Essentially, time the team spends together becomes a resource in and of itself. While together you gain increased productivity at the price of increased food cost, and later can use the tech tree to increase that productive time together between deaths. It also provides the joy of being wrenched apart from each other, and a new joy upon seeing each other again. Considering in reality, once you lose someone they're gone forever, you really should be taking that extra step to ensure each others' survival in-game as well. Now, not to say that this is an argument for "realism", but rather, adds a sense of emotional loss as well when your partner dies, and survivor's guilt motivating you to use your superior place in the tech tree to bring them back. This is far better than a simple suicide pact where one party dies and the rest all drop dead to follow.

Sorry if this is a really stupid questions but how is everyone using this mod? Have they not upgraded to 1.6.2 or something?

I hate to double-post, but, there's also steps to downgrade to 1.5.2 using the 1.6 launcher and install BTW on there, although it's far more confusing.
