And I mean like single/few blocks, not all the colors of wool
ex. properinglish's orange wool
Personally I think you'd have to be low on resources to use grass or wood for redstone

For a piston tape, you need to have an even number of blocks (10), so activate opposing corner pistons at the same time
= air =block =torch = repeater or wire
.
push the corners first, then the other 2 corners

Adders: easy peasy
Subtractors: adders with xors
Multiplication: Multiple adders or adders+shift registers
Division: ROM (or subtractors and shifters)

It's as easy as googling arithmetic circuits online.

The first bit of the adder is not responsible for the next bit, nor the next bit after that, for that would add infinite delay if the first bit was responsible for the next bits (of say like 64 adders).
