posted a message on Elemental reasons to like "The Slip" as a name
    Quote from Truestep »
When Notch called for suggestions to rename "hell," it brought to mind something he has mentioned awhile back. It was about his goal of using the classical "four elements" (Earth, Air, Water, and Fire) in the design of the game's features at some point in the future.

The new "hell" dimension has many close links to the element of fire, so it's a natural candidate for an elemental fire realm. Later on he could add other elemental dimensions, each with its own unique elemental properties, yet all sharing the common quality of enabling fast travel in the "normal world." The main reason I have not written about this suggestion before was that I had not come up with a good catchy name for these elemental dimensions.

"The Slip" is perfect for this. In the Halloween update, we gain access to the FireSlip - by building an obsidian frame and setting the bottom blocks on fire:

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :VV: :VV: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

Later, perhaps we will build another obsidian frame, and place water blocks on its lower blocks, to create a new portal to the WaterSlip:

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :Water: :Water: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

Placing soil blocks could create a portal to the EarthSlip:

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :soil: :soil: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

I'm not sure of the best way to activate a portal to the AirSlip - perhaps by placing two other blocks in those spaces, then removing them so they get replaced with newly created air blocks. Or maybe this way:

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :Glass: :Glass: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

(Seems sort of logical, since making glass requires a lot of air.)

After seeing the creativity evident in this upcoming Slip realm, I'd love to see what new ideas Notch would create in new Slip dimensions based on the other elements.

I would be in support of this

I have been running the game fine before. Any idea why this would be happening?

I know I'm sorta in the minority here, but I actually really don't want a minimap. I think navigation should require some thought and planning.

I'm with you on this one. This is Survival. Having a minimap would ruin that aspect of the game.

We know what direction the sun/moon move, and we know what direction the clouds move. We have the ability to build landmarks, place lights, and erect towers that can be seen from large distances away, and to see some terrain distinction now to also help us remember a bit easier where we are. We have compasses that take us back to our spawn point, and we have hell-portals for fast-travel to known locations. You can follow bodies of water, leave a breadcrumb-trail of torches, and numerous other things to help navigate.

These things are what survival mode is all about... I see minimaps as being an easy, no-skill way of doing something that can be accomplished in a more fun, interactive, and realistic way by using the methods mentioned above... Or even drawing yourself a little paper map as you walk, like they did back in the old days when the lands were "uncharted" and there was no advanced technology to help them.

I read that in Samuel L. Jackson's voice. Might want to add some text to that response though, picture-only responses are frowned upon by moderators. From what I've seen, of course.

Anyway, I'm out. Have a nice day, everyone.

Hey Notch. Is there anything you can do about Lakes appearing where I am building and cutting half my tower down (and filling in half the underground with stone where I already cut out)? maybe not place lakes and things like that near torches?

    umm... how did that happen?

posted a message on 7 reasons why I dislike Biomes
I personally have a love/hate relationship with Biomes at this point. There are some issues, to be sure, but they still add some much-needed variety to the world.

What I'm most concerned about is that Notch is NOT going to make them as varied or large as I (and a lot of others) are hoping they will be. I want to see huge expanses of desert, lush, tall forests (not just areas with more trees), steamy tropical rainforests, and dark, moldy swamps. I would even go as far as to say that good implementation of Biomes is the single most important thing that Minecraft lacks (SMP being a close second).

All that being said, I think that Notch has made some good strides with Biomes. I just hope that he knows enough not to rest on his laurels.

posted a message on The Void: Does it still exist?

The Void exists. Game designer speaking, if it didn't your computer would crash upon loading constantly.

However, holes INTO the void no longer exist on NEWLY generated chunks or non-updated maps. Old holes exist, and un-updated maps will generate void-holes.

Thankyou for resolving this issue for me. It is good to have confirmation. However, it is sad that all void-related roleplaying and games will be lost forever. It is also sad that another beautifully dangerous element has been removed from player contact.

what did people do with the void?
