Think of it as you would cobblestone and smooth stone. Imagine all smoothstone was cobblestone. This is bad. Now imagine if all smooth stone is smooth stone. This is good. Right now Sandstone=cobblestone.

SANDSTONE, is made from SAND, getting pushed together, making SANDSTONE, a blocky, NON SMOOTHE, block.

So every color of wool is a different block id(no), texture(yes) and coding(no). The three different types of logs are one block Id, the three saplings are one block Id. It should be very easy to add variations on a texture to any specific block.
still, notch wouldn't take the time to add something as insignificant as this.
1)open the minecraft.jar
2) locate terrain.png
3) open it
4) look for the sandstone texture
5) do whatever the hell you want with it, make it look like a giant green banana, i dont care.
and then your house gets up and pees splinters all over the world, then it eats all the trees and becomes a giant wooden robot, then the robot will eploade the world for iron, oce it has enough iron it will become a iron robot.it will get thirsty and drink the ocean then pee acid in the ole it made while digging for iron!
