I personally interpret Notch's stance to be mostly sentimental, judging by his twitter and blog posts. I think if I were in his place I would feel upset about the community implementing features in a game I had not yet finished working on, many preempting my own ideas. Logically, it would be an excellent thing that so much is being done to enhance the players' experience, but there would be that part of me that would feel let down. Think about if you were writing a short story and someone was reading over your shoulder. Then you see them sit down next to you and continue your story from where you are currently writing, embellishing characters, writing deft descriptions, and moving the plot forward in their own direction. Some of the things they write are totally different from what you had planned. Some are ideas you'd already decided on, but hadn't reached yet. Surely you would wish that at least they would have waited until you had finished your version of the story. I think Notch is in a very similar position, having an emotional attachment to his unfinished work. And this is GOOD! We WANT him to care about his game!
There is also the legal aspect. Notch doesn't want us disassembling the code - that much is obvious. He states specifically that it is the client - that only paid users should legally have - which he doesn't want messed with. This is a very healthy stance. Disassembling the code can open the floodgates for all sorts of malicious behavior, piracy not the least of this.
From a strictly Utilitarian point of view, modding at this point can be seen as ethical - it brings much joy to MANY users. However, I think that a Kantian perspective would argue against modding Minecraft under these circumstances; we would be treating Notch, by abusing his wishes for his code, as solely a means to the end of our entertainment.
I honestly don't know where I stand. There are many mods which I am excited about, but on the other hand I am discouraged by the stance Notch has taken. On the whole, I don't think Notch disapproves of the results of the modders' work, just the method and timing. I'm eager for the point at which Notch starts working on official mod support so that we can dispense with all these issues, and I am glad that mod support was one of his original design tenets.
The reason I'm keeping Obsidian Dust is because after the first version has been released I plan to make Obsidian Dust placeable like Redstone Dust. You can also make Obsidian Torches. However, Obsidian Dust can ONLY control Nether Portals. You can still use levers, pressure plates, etc but it's only function is turning the Portal on or off.
And why would portals need to be turned on and off? Unless they acted as mob spawners! :biggrin.gif: Maybe make mob spawners affected by redstone too! But back on topic - obsidian dust seems superfluous. Obsidian torches could be cool if they produced negative light and were toggleable by redstone? Still these could be made with obsidian blocks and sticks, giving 4 obsidian torches.

Also, with Obsidian Dust you will be able to craft Dark Crystal Glass, which is basically a slightly purple tinted glass but it has the same resistance to tools and explosions as Obsidian Blocks do. I believe this will be extremely useful in the Nether realm against creatures such as the Ghast.
I like the tinted glass idea, but this could be made with obsidian+glass or obsidian ingot+glass. Also it would SUCK to have to break obsidian strength glass when you misplaced it.

EDIT 2: I'm actually considering removing Obsidian Dust... After thinking about it, it seems useless when I can simply allow Redstone Dust to control Portals. I'll think about it.
IMO, definitely a better plan. Obsidian dust seems like making the player jump through hoops for little reward. Kinda like making bookshelves currently in SP :tongue.gif:
You could do away with obsidian 'dust' completely if you made the obsidian-iron alloy craftable with an obsidian bar and an iron bar. That would seem much more practical to me.
Personally, I think this section of the forum is getting very bloated. We already have a separate section devoted to Skins, how about we make different sections for each of Maps, Mods, and Texture packs? Hopefully a moderator will happen upon this poll and make some new sections if the community calls for it, and migrate the relevant topics over.
Being completely unhelpful here, but...
You've got to realize that portals to the Nether tap unknown sources of Minecraftian power. Do NOT expect things to be well with your world once you seek to venture into the forbidden recesses of the Nether plane.
Generally speaking, while updates don't break old saves, it's rarely guaranteed new features work on existing saves.
In short, I hope snow works in existing worlds, but I'm not confident it will.
Short answer: It does not.
Long answer: Since the snowfall and freezing effect were mechanics specific to 'Snow' worlds - a designation which no longer exists - even those pre-Halloween 'Snow' worlds will not regain fallen snow or ice. This will probably be fixed so that snow falls in the correct biomes, but I doubt Notch will re-implement it as a constant effect in those biomes. Also beware: your old 'snow' worlds may actually be hiding a Rainforest biome. I've seen this on several pre-Halloween saves; the coloration is nowhere near correct for the Taiga biome.
A tree I tried to plant underground also refused to grow for days on end. (Yes, I was even in chunk.) It finally did, without any change to its configuration:

(side view - flower is sapling)
It continues to grow at a rate of once every 6-10 Minecraft days.
(Trees in my above-ground open tree farm grow in 2-3 days if lit by a torch)
Conclusion: It seems cramped confines cause trees to grow more slowly than usual.
It took FOREVER for my indoor saplings to grow even in a grid orientations like this:
or this:
I had two set up simultaneously 'cos I'd been waiting for 6+ Minecraft days for a single tree. Now they grow with quite some regularity. It's strange why they took so long initially. The bottom setup is enough to give me excess wood, and is quite manageable. I usually only have to cut 3 trees at a time and since I have a ceiling overhead they can't grow super tall.

Phooey? I was unaware of it being asked a lot. I apologize for the redundancy and my failing to use search.

Perhaps the poll should be merged with this thread?

^ This.
A line and curved line tool would also be useful.
Permit us also to draw temporary (non-blocky) lines, circles and curved lines as a guide, please.

Apparently there was already a topic on this over in the Forum Discussion Forum:
