everything looks great except the removal of single player. I love being able to play without worrying about horrid latency. I look at multiplayer bugs and cringe. I can't fight, because my attacks don't register until the mob has attacked me twice, I can't place blocks because they spaz out, it's almost unplayable!
but I'm stuck with it because I know every map from here on will use those book+quills for notes. >.<
The release notes are not very clear about it, but in 12w21b single-player is running as a single process again. It's been working pretty well for me (my laptop is 2006 vintage.) Give it a try.

Avidyazen has a nice beta tutorial for a compact mob trap.

I posted about the pumpkins and sugarcane not generating the same as they did in 1.5 but I hadn't noticed changes with lava and water. Someone recently asked Notch why clay was less frequent in 1.6 and he replied that it was a bug.
I used your seed and spawned in the dungeon. When I got out I saw a waterfall across the way, but have not seen lava.

Right, I don't think leaves count when checking space requirements.
I've been growing birch myself, which are finicky by requiring 2 blocks clear next to them, for a total 5x5 area. Other saplings don't count.
According to the wiki, pine saplings require 3 blocks clear on the sides, for a total 7x7 area.

Most seeds have somewhat random spawns, but when the world has sand at sea level at the origin (0, 0) then the spawn is always at the origin. Thus it is "fixed" or "absolute".

Have him go to java.com to check that he has the latest version of java.
The JRE is normally limited to how much memory it will use, even when the system has more free. There are options to increase that limit but I would have to search for them since I don't normally work on ms/windows. Another JRE option to investigate is -client vs -server. (sorry if that's getting too techy.)
Also, has he tried turning down all the minecraft video options?

Hi Joe,
The ubuntu gaming forum (or maybe other ubuntu help forum for java help) may have something.
Short answer: there's more than one way to do it.
First thing to try: double-click the minecraft jar file.
If that fails then try this at the shell prompt:
java -client -jar minecraft.jar
(of course first cd to the folder where you put the jar)
If that fails then check help.ubuntu.com for how to install the "Sun" java JRE.
If problems persist then you are off to "twisty little passages" categories ...
EDIT: forgot that minecraft can be run from the browser, so that's another thing to try. I never considered running it that way. (the "sun" java install could still apply for this option)
