So.. I hate to ask this. But can someone link me to an efficient mob killer that isn't outdated?

I'm looking on YouTube but all of them are from back in the Alpha days :/

Avidyazen has a nice beta tutorial for a compact mob trap.

posted a message on Same Seed, Different World?
    Quote from fredklein

I just thought they were generated by the same terrain generator, and thus would be the same with the same seed. In fact, I'm pretty sure of this, as (months ago) I gave that seed to other people and they were able to generate the same world as I did, lava and water included. Now, when they try it, they also get no lava and no water. Something changed in the terrain generator. I'm just wondering what, and why. And how come no one noticed it before.

I posted about the pumpkins and sugarcane not generating the same as they did in 1.5 but I hadn't noticed changes with lava and water. Someone recently asked Notch why clay was less frequent in 1.6 and he replied that it was a bug.

I used your seed and spawned in the dungeon. When I got out I saw a waterfall across the way, but have not seen lava.

From what I remember, leaves don't affect tree growth (this may have changed in recent updates, though I'm unaware). Either way, there are none above my saplings. They have open sky and plenty of light.

Right, I don't think leaves count when checking space requirements.

EDIT: I think I'm past the 10th day and I still don't have any trees growing...

I wonder if pine trees are really finicky.

I've been growing birch myself, which are finicky by requiring 2 blocks clear next to them, for a total 5x5 area. Other saplings don't count.

According to the wiki, pine saplings require 3 blocks clear on the sides, for a total 7x7 area.

posted a message on Absolute spawn seed finding strategy?
    Quote from J7a1c1e

    Uh. What's an "absolute spawn"?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Most seeds have somewhat random spawns, but when the world has sand at sea level at the origin (0, 0) then the spawn is always at the origin. Thus it is "fixed" or "absolute".

That it a great map, with a lot of biomes close to each other. I like the exposed stone; noticed some patches of coal there. The other exposed coal seemed "normal" to me.

    Any other advice?

Have him go to java.com to check that he has the latest version of java.

The JRE is normally limited to how much memory it will use, even when the system has more free. There are options to increase that limit but I would have to search for them since I don't normally work on ms/windows. Another JRE option to investigate is -client vs -server. (sorry if that's getting too techy.)

Also, has he tried turning down all the minecraft video options?

    Quote from joefighter13

Hello, I am new to Minecraft and my buddy let me use his Account to try it out singleplayer and multiplayer. If all goes well, I WILL buy it. But one problem, I don't know how to run it on Ubuntu. I was wondering if someone could help. I'm really sorry if there is and most like is already a thread for this problem, but I used the search bar and could not find one as this would make my problem easier to solve. Can somebody please help me?

    Hi Joe,

The ubuntu gaming forum (or maybe other ubuntu help forum for java help) may have something.

Short answer: there's more than one way to do it.

First thing to try: double-click the minecraft jar file.

If that fails then try this at the shell prompt:

    java -client -jar minecraft.jar

(of course first cd to the folder where you put the jar)

If that fails then check help.ubuntu.com for how to install the "Sun" java JRE.

If problems persist then you are off to "twisty little passages" categories ...

EDIT: forgot that minecraft can be run from the browser, so that's another thing to try. I never considered running it that way. (the "sun" java install could still apply for this option)
