posted a message on What should I do with my main world once 1.8 comes out?
I make sure to enjoy myself, but never get so involved in a world that I'll be afraid of the next update. I always start over after a new update. If a new .
ore or naturally spawning block is added, your old world becomes a lot more difficult to handle (i.e. lapis, pumpkins, new trees, etc.)

It would be best not to play super-serious until the final release. Don't invest too much time into massive creations.

Wow. I was kind of looking forward to playing Skyrim, but this is detestable, and it may effect my decision when the time comes for a purchase. It's bad enough that they're going to charge $60 for it.

I sincerely hope that Notch continues with his plans and fights the lawsuit. He certainly has the money to do so.

Check ram as posted above, but you might want to check too see if you're drivers are up to date and that your java runtime environment is up to date too.

Edit: 6 gigs is more than enough,

My old computer had 2 gigs, and that was more than enough.

Some things that are often overlooked but also affect Minecraft are memory speed and the quality of your graphics device.

You might have a difficult time finding out the speed of your memory without looking up the model of your computer on Google (if you didn't build it yourself). Look up the memory clock and timings. I think this is most likely the culprit. PC manufacturers like to screw customers on things like this because when people buy a computer they tend to only look at three things: CPU speed/cores, amount of memory, and hard drive space.

The graphics card that you have should be fine for running the game.

Also uninstall Java, and then do a search for and download "64 bit Java" if you're running a 64 bit operating system. I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my new computer and couldn't find out why Minecraft was giving me a "running out of memory" error, and after weeks of searching, this was the issue.

posted a message on Where do you stay in the mean time?
I dig a small dwelling into a hillside; it usually has a small storage room, furnace room, small area for a bed, and a strip mine entrance. I'll stay there until I can set up a proper tree farm and gather enough wood for a real house.

My 2+ story buildings usually go like this: 1 block high foundation (optional, strictly for appearance), four block high rooms, 1 block thick ceiling, and then a 1 block high floor for the next level, and so on.

Houses look great if you do windows that are 3 blocks tall in this setup, starting 1 block off the floor and extending to the ceiling.

posted a message on Do you think flying in singleplayer is cheating?
I really don't think you can "cheat" at Minecraft, because for now, there isn't any way to "win". However, the fact that you don't have to craft anything or work to gain the ability to fly means that you're only "cheating" yourself here. A great deal of time is spent climbing in Minecraft, and you're pretty much removing that aspect of the game.

I have several content-adding mods installed, but all of them except the mini-map require that I gather materials and craft things in order to use them.

It's your game, do what you want with it.

TNT is really only useful for clearing out large rooms underground or removing surface dirt and stone, since it destroys 70% of the blocks that it breaks. It's also nice for traps.

posted a message on Best way to bring resources to the surface?
Mining is probably my favorite part of the game, even moreso than building or spelunking, but long, arduous trips to the surface are pretty much part of the job unless you either A) have a ton of gold for powered rails, or :cool.gif: build a subterranean base, which is a huge pain when it comes to clearing out space for various plant farms. My advice would be a ladder in a 3x3 hole to the surface so you could quickly rappel back down off the ladder. Also take the bare minimum with you each trip: a couple stacks of torches or sticks and coal, maybe two food items, a couple stone shovels, and iron pickaxe and 5 or 6 stone pickaxes (or whichever you prefer, I like stone as to not waste valuable resources).

Are you sure you aren't pressing F1 by accident? :biggrin.gif:

Definitely not hitting F1, that's the first thing I checked when I started having the issue. I think it has something to do with the shaders I'm using. I reinstalled them after installing AutoMap and the problem didn't happen for about 2 hours of continuous play last night. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I came across a weird bug. After using AutoMap for a few minutes, the toolbar in Minecraft will disappear, along with the options menu and inventory. The only way to get them back, as far as I can tell, is to close and reload Minecraft, which is very irritating to do every couple minutes, as you can imagine.

I had used past versions of AutoMap (had a falling out with Minecraft, getting back into it now) and I really enjoyed it, and I would hate to have to give it up because of something like this. Does anyone have any experience with this bug?

    Quote from Meldi »
As far as i know, no.
There are however layers that are easier to mine then others. Like for example the famous layer 10 for diamonds, wich in that case is because you don't risk beeing flooded by lava or falling into a empty hole, at the same time as lava pockets offer vision over relative big areas with little effort.

    Quote from Moviecritic6 »
That one is pretty old and outdated, sadly i haven't seen a new one yet.

It is verry outdated, but why change it if it isn't broken :tongue.gif:

That's actually level 12. Level 12 is the highest that the "lava layer" will go. Small pools of lava can form occasionally up to the surface, but the risk from those is minimal.

    posted a message on Diamonds?
If you've ever used Minecraft X-Ray (now defunct as of Beta 1.3) you'd see that a large percentage of veins are 1x2, 1x3, or 1x4, all of which can be missed if you mine with three rows in between. Two rows will catch everything, which is important when diamond is so rare and you are clearing so much stone in the process. Plus you'll catch whatever other ores are down there.

I recommend going down to layer 12, because this is where lava starts and your tunnels will not get emergency lava floods here. Diamond ore occurs uniformly up to layer 18, with a slimmer chance at 19, so if 12 is the ground floor of your mine you will expose the entirety of layers 13 and 14, and a third of layers 12 and 15 through mining 2x1 tunnels in this pattern:

posted a message on [MOD] Ye olde minegunner / b1.2
I have to say, this is one of my favorite mods. I really loathe the current "fighting" format that the game has (if you really want to call it that, it's more like clicking enemies to death), but this mod makes it feel like I'm hunting dangerous enemies for their loot. The best part is that it takes a good deal of iron to maintain a healthy supply of bullets, and you need coal from mining to make sulfur, so you can't just set up a tree farm for charcoal for unlimited TNT. It keeps the weapon use fairly balanced. You also need to carry like five flintlocks to have any effectiveness.

    Great mod.

May i ask, has notch increased the amount of space needed to grow a tree since i have waited around 10 minecraft days for it to grow but it never has.

I may be talking out my ass, but try putting it on top of a dirt block, with the torches around the dirt block instead.
