Wow. I was kind of looking forward to playing Skyrim, but this is detestable, and it may effect my decision when the time comes for a purchase. It's bad enough that they're going to charge $60 for it.
I sincerely hope that Notch continues with his plans and fights the lawsuit. He certainly has the money to do so.

ore or naturally spawning block is added, your old world becomes a lot more difficult to handle (i.e. lapis, pumpkins, new trees, etc.)
It would be best not to play super-serious until the final release. Don't invest too much time into massive creations.

My old computer had 2 gigs, and that was more than enough.
Some things that are often overlooked but also affect Minecraft are memory speed and the quality of your graphics device.
You might have a difficult time finding out the speed of your memory without looking up the model of your computer on Google (if you didn't build it yourself). Look up the memory clock and timings. I think this is most likely the culprit. PC manufacturers like to screw customers on things like this because when people buy a computer they tend to only look at three things: CPU speed/cores, amount of memory, and hard drive space.
The graphics card that you have should be fine for running the game.
Also uninstall Java, and then do a search for and download "64 bit Java" if you're running a 64 bit operating system. I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my new computer and couldn't find out why Minecraft was giving me a "running out of memory" error, and after weeks of searching, this was the issue.

Houses look great if you do windows that are 3 blocks tall in this setup, starting 1 block off the floor and extending to the ceiling.

I have several content-adding mods installed, but all of them except the mini-map require that I gather materials and craft things in order to use them.
It's your game, do what you want with it.

Definitely not hitting F1, that's the first thing I checked when I started having the issue. I think it has something to do with the shaders I'm using. I reinstalled them after installing AutoMap and the problem didn't happen for about 2 hours of continuous play last night. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I had used past versions of AutoMap (had a falling out with Minecraft, getting back into it now) and I really enjoyed it, and I would hate to have to give it up because of something like this. Does anyone have any experience with this bug?

That's actually level 12. Level 12 is the highest that the "lava layer" will go. Small pools of lava can form occasionally up to the surface, but the risk from those is minimal.

I recommend going down to layer 12, because this is where lava starts and your tunnels will not get emergency lava floods here. Diamond ore occurs uniformly up to layer 18, with a slimmer chance at 19, so if 12 is the ground floor of your mine you will expose the entirety of layers 13 and 14, and a third of layers 12 and 15 through mining 2x1 tunnels in this pattern:

Great mod.

I may be talking out my ass, but try putting it on top of a dirt block, with the torches around the dirt block instead.
