@PuppetPal_Clem, 45? You're almost as old as I am. It's good to see how universal the appeal of this game is. It's too bad my wife isn't into it, but one of my kids (who has moved out) shares my online realm.

It seems to me that Mojang made a great deal when Microsoft bought them, considering they still have creative control. There have certainly been cases where a merger has led to the collapse of a popular game. (I'm looking at another big company known by its initials.)
I've been playing Minecraft for several years now, and I bet I'm older than anyone in this thread. I've never touched the PvP system. The great thing about this game is that there are different ways to experience it. If you want to battle other players, you can do so. If you want to explore a huge, lonely world, building as you go, you can do that. My son loves building intricate redstone mechanisms.
For me, Minecraft is a very relaxing game, a great way to unwind in the evening. But to each his own.

I'm a peaceful builder-explorer, so my ongoing goal is to expand my road network, building structures that complement the local terrain along the way.
My current long-term goal is to reach the ocean in all directions with all of my roads, mapping out the continent I'm exploring.
In the shorter term, I'm extending 643 Street West to the north until I reach the ocean, then creating 2000 Ave North to connect it to 406 Street West, then 239 Street West.
I post periodic updates to my explorations at geobecksrealms.wordpress.com, although I haven't updated that site since I defined my street names.

I find I don't have much use for shovels. At least, when my shovel wears out, I tend to keep digging by hand until I've finished my current excavation rather than run back to the nearest crafting area to make more. It's slower, sure, but not nearly as much difference as between pickaxe and hand, and you don't lose any functionality, like when your hoe or shears wear out.

If I share any of my maps, the torch people will probably be screwed up--I always place them on the left going in.
But I also place enough stairways that I'm never too far from a route to the surface.

I joined, the left the beta this morning.
First problem I found was that my tablet's top status bar remained visible when switching apps, obstructing part of the UI, and requiring the game to be restarted to get rid of it.
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get a screenshot because the second bug I found was the game crashing upon trying to load any world.
