posted a message on How do I launch a mod that I have already been playing through the awful twitch app?

Becasue the twitch app won't update, which means it wont launch, which means I can not get to the mods button. Is there a command line thing I can do?

(and yes I've trashed the twitch app then tried to re download it, but then it launches and says it needs to update, and the update doesn't work).

Can I copy the profile to the REAL minecraft and just launch it from there? Instructions are needed if this is possible.

posted a message on Walking through portals?

actually they are instant on all game modes on my computer. I have a PC and a Mac, both on 1.10, and the behaviour is the same for me on my own lan worlds as well as internet servers - instant portal travel. It's sometimes pretty frustrating ...

posted a message on Walking through portals?

Since about 1.8-ish, the instant I touch the purple stuff in a portall I get transported to the nether or back again. In the past I was able to walk through portals to the other side of them and to teleport I'd have to stand in the portal for a couple of seconds.

Is there a way to make it so that I have wait a bit to teleport again like how it used to be? This is particularly annoying on servers where portals are often in tunnels and you have to walk through the portal to get to the next bit of the tunnel ..

posted a message on wow, minecraft just got significantly less kid friendly.

we have been having fun building shelters and doing fun things like fishing, riding pigs, turning mooshrooms into cows. he builds rollercoasters in creative, goes fishing, makes waterfalls, pours lava on villages, has fun in minecraft basically. he makes basic shelters with doors and a bed in survival and sleeps through the night, and can hit away the zombies with sticks and swords and run away from creepers or kite them into the water to make them safely explode... well, that was in 1.8 anyway. minecraft 1.8 was fun, and catered for almost everyone.

In 1.9 he starts building his first house and is sniped by a skeleton. he starts whacking a creeper and is blown up because timing/waiting is not something little kids know how to do. he goes looking for sheep but there are significantly less sheep/cows/pigs and significantly more chickens in the worlds we have generated so far ... everything is different and harder, and this takes out a section of the audience who can enjoy it. the "difficulty" seems to reduce the number of hostile mobs that spawn, but the system still doesn't reduce in difficulty. mobs still turn up in OP armour while you're still punching trees. Playing on peaceful means no mobs spawn at all. I don't get the difficulty option at all, it might as well say "none", "hard", "still hard" and "permadeath".

so now I have to learn how to make potions, and have shields, and use anvils, and combine enchanted books, or build an absurd afk fish farm to harvest OP items ... basically the bits of minecraft that are really hard for a beginning (and aren't beginner options anyway). Mine for 6 hours so you have enough iron to make an anvil, diamonds to make an enchanting table, and raid enough mineshafts or dungeons just so you can make an enchanted armour set or sword powerful enough so that you can survive your first few nights? see the problem? You probably don't because many people have been playing for so many years that these seem trivial: they aren't.

1.9, the less fun update... :(

posted a message on wow, minecraft just got significantly less kid friendly.

my boy (who is pretty young) loves Minecraft. so far he's been pretty good at it. he's learning how to use the mouse, how how to spam-click on monsters to kill them. how to differentiate between left and right clicking for digging or placing blocks. it's pretty complicated when you think about it. then 1.9 came out and suddenly he's shouting and carrying on because he's suddenly dying over and over and over and over and there's nothing he can do about it. mobs are harder. there's more of them. start a new world, walk for two minutes, get killed by a skeleton hiding under a tree, and you're still chopping wood to make your first crafting bench. is this fun? having only just come to grips with clicking the correct mouse button in order to perform the desired action he's suddenly incapable of killing anything. Granted, in a couple of months he'll learn to press and hold the mouse, or learn to pause between actions (he doesn't do that outside Minecraft yet, so it may be a while) such as hitting the baddies. creepers are now the absolute worst, there is no possible way for him to ever kill a creeper. the concept of having two hands is well beyond him - controlling both the action hand and the off-hand - so having to build and then equip a shield every time he goes outside just to stay alive long enough to chop down a tree has already shown itself to be way too difficult. So far, I've rolled back to 1.7 and it looks like it'll be at least a year before he is able to attempt 1.9, if ever. I do hope the next version concentrates on something fun rather than combat.

posted a message on add world generation option for nether, end

settings for nether and end generation on the custom world options and superflat world customisation types would be great. for instance, one could choose to create a superflat nether with various levels of nether ores and fortresses. Or a superflat end with endless castles and purple trees... Being able to set the x,y, and z scales for the terrain generation would be my primary use.

posted a message on faces on new skins?
The new skins are great. The only thing I'd like to see added would be face support. Happy, sad, angry, scared, neutral, derpy. Be a great addition for machinima, youtube vids, etc.

posted a message on looking to run my own server
FTP, Tekkit, these are all for people who have played vanilla for ages and love the mods. I love some of the mods, but there are just way too many and no way to easily distinguish or disable them. I've been trying out dozens of mods and most of them add way more complication than we are looking for

I'm looking for a maintained server release I can put on our win server for our friends to play and create on. We don't really care about these things:
    • economy / trade / ownership
    • redstone anything.
    • guns / weapons
    • computers / automators
    • gears / motors / pipes / trains
the things we really like are:
    • farming, bees, cows, etc
    • cool new mobs, sounds, realms, "more of" what makes minecraft minecraft
    • biomes & ores
    • sexy looking trees, flowers and decorations
    • villages, fortresses, ruins
    • magic / role play type fighting
are there any server packs / launches and general mod-handlers that let us easily run a server that's more about what we like and less like tekkit or ftb?

posted a message on The BigTrees Mod
can't get this to work. here's what I did:
    1. from https://minecraft.net/download, downloaded server .exe and .jar and put them both in a folder.
    2. ran it once to generate all the stuff in that folder, like server.properties and such.
    3. stopped, quit, deleted "world" folder.
    4. opened minecraft_server.jar in winrar
    5. dragged in all the files from "bigtrees-146b-server.zip"
    6. closed jar
    7. put "kbigtrees.txt" into the same folder as the server jar
    8. ran mineraft_server.exe
    9. Ran minecraft.exe and multiplayer connect to 127.0.0.1
    10. changed to creative mode
    11. looked around - no big trees!
    So ... what's the go?

is there going to be a site that describes the technical process behind this voxelisation? I'd sure like to know how it performs things like rendering trees, or deciding to place a bridge on the side of landscape ..

posted a message on faces / expressions
Animating player skins would be tricky - where would you store the files? Since each player could potentially have a unique skin they would need unique animated elements. Would have to use some kind of accessible storage like amazon s3 (which minecraft uses).

posted a message on faces / expressions
there seems to be room for about 6 faces all up in the standard skin. Modding the skin size seems difficult because it's stored on amazon s3 storage so it's available everywhere on all net-connected servers, which is why I'm trying to go for a solution inside the standard skin file. Changing mob expressions should be relatively easy since you can hook the expression to their current action (hurt, hunting, idle, etc), but doing it for the player means also modding the server to support the extra state for the player instance. Actually, that side is pretty easy, just getting the texture to change is my current problem!
