This is kind of what I would want to make, Dungeon Realms that is.

Pay2Play is very unpopular, but there are a few that would invite it and that's the few I want to target. It's easy to appeal to a few and they most likely are mature and fun players to play with.

I completely agree with him. You should do this.

While I do agree strongly with him about making the donor upgrades only affect appearance and not actual gameplay, I also agree with WoeUntoYou that it will keep out MOST of the annoying kids and large number of traffic that would normally keep actual fun to play with gamers out. I know it would be the unpopular decision, but the end effect for the dedicated gamers would be better... right?

    There's a lot to consider.

okay, so you want to build a reputation.
what do you think will do that?

    no donations (2/10)
    professional aid (5/10)
    sentimental value (7/10)

if i DID pay for your server I would play on it but only because i have paid money for it.

If you build it, they will come. It's like anything else. You need to prove that what you are delivering are not only worth that monthly cost, but worth even more to make those adamant free2play only( and i'm not saying it's bad. I completely understand the thoughts behind it ) change their opinion even if only a little bit.

Well, I play on DungeonRealms, which is currently a pay to play server, until it's released to the public.

I quite frankly think it was worth the money.

Can I ask what it was that made the server very compelling for you?

Unique content is important and personally... I have to make my own stuff. Can't use someone else's so I reinvent the wheel all the time, but since I have direct control of the direction of plugin development this gives the paying users the ability to add their input and in the end tailor the game to suit them a little better. Add new functionality that they would like to see more quickly and this in itself is very compelling to many people, myself included.

    EDIT:
    Quote from WoeUntoYou

How much would you have to pay a month? Like $1, $5? It depends quite a lot on the price.

I haven't had much time to consider it as I wanted to talk to you guys, the community first. In my head I was thinking anywhere from $2-$3 or maybe even $4 but that's an extreme case. If possible i'd go for $2 a month. Ideally i'd get at least 15 people to put a down payment first and then lock the server into a pay2play method and see how it goes from there.

This is a discusssion about the pros and cons of a pay2play model for a server and extends a bit to some of the other models.

    Your input is greatly appreciated.

The risk of closing a server is always an issue, especially for someone who on the internet that is just saying their server is good and won't be closed. You can't gurantee that the person will be refunded no matter howmuch the server owner "promises." That is one big thing to definately look at.

One way to counter that is to open as free at first and build up that reputation. Might have to incur the costs for a bit, but hopefully once you have an awesome server set up and it has players that want to stay on, you can switch to some payment method and in due time regain your personal payments.

Balance would be a key part.

You're not paying for the multiplayer of the game, but rather for the control and balancing of the game. Since you are paying and not just some passing by player on a free server you would be afforded the time by the developers, admins, and mods to have such an experience. Atleast that's how I would see it and intend for it to be. With a large free community it's hard to address problems for everyone without the incentive. With a small paying community, you have an incentive already to want to be able to help anyone.

Thanks for the input thus far.

I'll try to look at the various attacks and offer my opinion on them:

Theres already plenty of free2play servers
There is, but it's like anything else: you get what you pay for. I've wandered across plenty free servers and have encountered a number of patchy server issues and useless admins/mods. With a pay2play server, hopefully, there is quality control. You can have a higher quality server that doesn't need as many slots available so you can get as many people and hope they donate. Also with the money you can get recruit more professional aid in running and managing the servers so downtime as at a minimal and the admins/mods are actually useful.

    Donation method is better
I hate the idea that someone can be better off because they paid a little more than somebody else. With a flat pay rate no one gets that added bonus and everyone is at the same playing field.

Start free and work your way up
In this is generally called building traction. You want to get people interested and gauged by first offering free or cheap services and then crank up the prices once you start building a reputation. I would have most likely done this especially to hammer out some of the finer details.

Out of curiosity, how many people are willing to pay2play on a server? And on that note, how many people are grossly disgusted by it?

I ask because I wanted to start my own server but to help negate costs, theres a pay2play method. It acts as a way to only allow those who are serious about playing on the server and usually only includes the more mature players. Not saying i'll go through with it, but just wanted to get the opinion of the community.

Also I know I can make a private server with friends and we can share the costs, but there's something about playing with complete strangers who are interchanging that brings a new light to the game. See the game operate through the eyes of different players with different backgrounds and experiences..

At one point long ago I had a very successful server that was survival and all the plugins were made by me for the community. I couldn't afford to upgrade the server to keep up with the influx of all the players and had to close shop( sorry to those of you who played on that server long ago, some of you loved it and I just closed it without any warning )!

Finally, I could probably open up more servers as we go along just enough to cut even and create a small community for the different types of servers available today... and growing considerably.

    My Opinions on Some Issues:

He is suggesting to the community to go find out :ohmy.gif:. Also, it needs to be natural lightning. Bedrock can tell natural and user created lightning :wink.gif:

Smelting milk to get cheese doesn't make too much sense :tongue.gif:. Maybe you can place the bucket on ground as an block and over time the milk curdles and makes cheese :ohmy.gif:. Breaking it too early gives an empty bucket but right when it is cheese, you get cheese + bucket :biggrin.gif:

you realize it takes something like 5 saplings to smelt one block? That's not OP.

Also, would you be able to mix the types of saplings? say, a birch and normal would still make sticks?

    Hybrid sticks of course.

Heating sand makes glass, but enough heat and pressure can turn it into rock. Plus, how does a redstone torch stay together? It's just a stick with a dust on the end.

You can do that, but I would have just used a lot of glue :3

Obviously if he said it, he doesn't care what you have to say for the matter. In fact, his options were to other reply to an old post and get flamed or open a new post and get flamed because it is such a seemingly "common" idea.
