I just started Dwarf Fortress, but im terrible. Im only here to ask, what game are you using? I downloaded Slaves of Armok II, or whatever. Is that what you're using?
So I reached the beginning of summer and decided to post an update. In case you're wondering, I just hit embark now. I didn't set up our group.
Began work on our fortress. Turns out there are cliffs in Gatefogs.
Set a ton of trees to be cut down and plants to be picked. I'll stop posting useless stuff now, only the important things.
These are the creatures in the area. The wolves are slightly worrying to me.
I added some rooms to the fortress. Lots of workshops and piles. I'm beginning to work on the living quarters down below.
Starting to do some mining. Hit some gems. Lucky.
Finished with the residential area. There's some extra rooms already dug out for when the immigrants get to Gatefogs. That room with the table and chairs is the new meeting hall, so the dwarfs stop wandering back to the wagon. Also, I butchered the camel, because it was useless.
And that was spring. Not particularly eventful, but I got a lot of work done, for a noob.
Finally, for your viewing pleasure, all the levels of the fortress (From highest to lowest):
Thank you, and goodnight. I'll see you all tomorrow.
PS Sorry I'm not very good at this whole narrating thing... I'm probably pretty boring.
Ok, you guys are all signed up!
Edit: I think I'm going to embark soon. Hopefully someone signs up for turn four by the time we get there (Hopefully in a few days)
Edit 2: Embarked, our fortress is to be known forever as .... GATEFOGS! Gatefogs? Seriously?
Edit 3: The first look at Gatefogs: Ugh, no cliffs in sight. I'll probably be done by saturday, and I'll post my save then.
Hello everyone, your friendly neighborhood burning carnivore here, with a...
MINECRAFT FORUM DWARF FORTRESS SUCCESSION GAME!
or MFDFSG for short. (Holy **** that is a long title wow)
If you don't know, a succession game is where multiple players sign up, and then play a single save file for a set amount of time. Uh, that was a bad explanation... What I'm trying to say is I play a game of Dwarf Fortress for a set period of in-game time, then, when my time is up, I upload the save to the internet, and the next person downloads it and plays for another set period of in-game time, uploads the save... rinse, repeat.
So now, for some particulars. Each person plays for one year of in-game time. From the beginning of spring, to the beginning of spring. So that means when you start, you play until you see the announcement "Spring has come on the calendar" (I think it's something like that, but you know what I mean). If you can't finish your year, just upload the save, and the next person can decide whether to just finish your year, or finish your year and then play theirs.
For those of you who like step-by-step explanations, here's how it works:
0. Sign up for the game (duh)
1. Download the save of the person before you
2. Move the save to "whatever your Dwarf Fortress folder is/data/save" (If you already have a region of that number, just change the folder's name, so you don't have to replace an older save)
3. Open Dwarf Fortress, and begin playing the save
4. Play until you see the announcement of Spring (Of course, you don't have to play the entire year at once)
5. Save the game
6. Move the save to a compressed zipped folder
7. Upload the save to a file sharing site of your choice
8. Make a post on this thread telling the other players what you did, and a link to the save (You can write in whatever style you want, if you like real writing, write it like a story. Or you can do what I'm going to do and write it in a way that just informs what's happening)
--OPTIONAL-- Sign up for a later spot, so you can do it again! (Only do this after you've finished the turn you're on)
Now for a fake FAQ! How good to I have to be at Dwarf Fortress to sign up?
As long as you know how to play the game, you can sign up! I'm terrible and I'm organizing this thing.
What if I destroy the Fortress or kill all the dwarfs or something like that?
Just try again! Re-download the save, we'll never need to know.
What happens if I mess up the fortress, but not beyond repair?
Just finish your turn, save, and give it to the next person. See if they can turn things around!
What if something comes up and I'll no longer be able to play my turn?
If you had started but are unable to finish, just upload the save, and like I said, the next person will finish your turn. If you haven't started, just post and say you're unable to take your turn. I'll just cross you off the list.
How many turns are the going to be?
Basically an infinite amount. Turns will just keep being added until everyone gets bored and leaves.
How many turns can I sign up for?
One at a time, but when you finish your turn, you can sign up for another.
What version of the game do I need? Please use version 0.31.10. If you hate the 2010 update, too bad. If you have a newer version, please download 0.31.10 so people like me can use the May Green tileset. Just use the newest version, tileset or no.
Can I download a save even if I'm not a part of the game?
Of course!
Am I allowed to comment on the game, even if I'm not playing?
Of course!
Do I HAVE to write about what I did?
Of course! And please include screen shots too, if you can.
What if my question wasn't answered in this FAQ?
Ask it in a post.
Alright, enough fake questions, everybody. Time to get down to business. To start with, there will be ten slots (or turns). Just say you want to sign up, and you'll be signed up. As long as there is interest, more slots/turns will be added!
Turn 1: Firetigerchs (me)
Turn 2: Cliff_Racer
Turn 3: Gyro
Turn 4: ottottott
Turn 5: blaster
Turn 6:
Turn 7:
Turn 8:
Turn 9:
Turn 10:
And finally, you're almost finished reading this wall of text (I'm really sorry about that, but I don't want to leave any info out)! The only thing left is a little information about the location. The Fortress is located in The Constructive Steppes, bordering on a brook known as The Mechanisms of Rawness. This place is on The Null Continent, in The Land of Soul. It is a Temperate Shrubland, the temperature is Warm, the area has Woodland trees, moderate other vegetation, and is in the Wilderness. If you have any objection to this area, or have some questions about it, don't hesitate to voice them.
I'm really sorry about the ridiculous amount I wrote, but I seriously didn't want to miss anything (Please tell me if I did). The game will start when some people start signing up. Have fun!
I haven't played a Pokemon game since Crystal, but I just got HeartGold. Going to play it now. Maybe I'll fill out that favorite Pokemon sheet when I get reacquainted with them.
As a somewhat lesser member, I can't say I remember much interaction with you DER (although that may just be because of my terrible memory), but I find myself sad at your departure nonetheless. Goodbye, and good luck.
The darker, windier, and louder a storm is the more I like it. There's something amazing about watching trees being blown around, heavy rain falling from the darkened sky, and lightning light up the world. And there's the thunder of course. But there's still nothing better than nighttime snowing.
I really like sunny days too, which is apparently weird...

No, I'm using May Green's version, which changes the ASCII to sprite graphics. You can get it here: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php
Also, just because you're terrible doesn't mean you can't play! Feel free to sign up (if you want to).

But he's specifically said he's going to do an Alpha creative...
I think he's going to work on SMP for a while even after the first public tests start, but then I assume he's going to start work on Alpha Creative.
