What you were saying about last gen consoles is that they couldn't have infinite worlds shaders etc, they could combat that by only allowing last gen consoles to host to other last gen consoles and have shaders disabled, no infinite worlds but they could still join servers hosted by current gen consoles with infinite worlds because it would be generated and stored on the aforementioned consoles.
Even so with a consoles limitations there are still hundreds of thousands of old slow computers playing Minecraft with rubbish hardware, slower than the ps3 which has 3.5Ghz Cpu and 500Mhz Gpu vs the my 2.4Ghz Cpu and absolutely awful integrated intel Gpu laptop with access to infinite worlds and everything else which performs around 40 fps on Minecraft Windows 10 edition with all the graphics set to full.
