posted a message on Slimes now spawn in swamps at night
One problem with them spawning in swamps is that they lag in water. And as mentioned it is tough to hit the big ones in water with a sword (maybe due to the lag you cannot tell where the server thinks they really are). But arrows are quite effective to break up the big ones and then it is easier to use a sword on medium and small ones.

Not sure if they only spawn at night, since slime spawning before was not affected by light level. It just now seems too easy to get lots of slime balls (including ones you just find from slimes that drown). Although, that can allow you to make massive piston operated things.

posted a message on Anvil experience
If you are using the anvil to repair unenchanted items, that would be a waste because you can already repair those using crafting without using experience points.

The anvil is most useful for passing on a known enchantment from an almost totally worn out tool to a new one, or combining enchantments that you can then pass on to other new tools. I haven't quite figured out how points cost is figured, because sometimes it costs 5 points, and other times 13 or 16 points.

posted a message on Sticky keys need fixing
There is definitely a stuck key issue with the lwjgl 2.4.2 that comes with minecraft, although, usually not that frequently, just once in a while. I cannot remember if I had that problem in Windows 7 because I have been playing it in 64-bit Linux since 1.8 beta. At the time I just updated all the lwjgl files to 2.6 and have not had that problem since, until I started playing tekkit which loads a separate minecraft with the old lwjgl 2.4.2.

While I normally play on a more capable desktop, but last night at a motel I played 1.4.2 SMP on a 1 GHz 2 core 2 GB tablet PC running 64-bit Linux booted from SD card (with keyboard and wireless mouse), not very quickly, but no stuck keys.

posted a message on Anvils would be OP no matter what? BULL CRAP!
I guess the person knocking anvils would be totally opposed to tekkit with all its mods including EE (equivalent exchange) where you can repair a tool by putting it in your alchemy bag at no cost, or eventually black matter tools that never wear out.

At least with already enchanted tools it gives you an idea what you will actually get instead of taking a chance at an unknown. But it still costs you.

posted a message on Pigs breeding via carrots is stupid and breaks my farms
Don't waste your time hunting zombies for a carrot. Out of all the zombies I have whacked, I think only one had a potato (the potatoes I was carrying were baked). Not sure if any had carrots, because I also had carrots with me to top off my hunger.

Just look for a village and you will have all the potatoes and carrots you want, unless SMP and someone raided the crops without replanting. Until then you can live on the wheat you are growing or make some cookies or pumpking pie.

Pigs are somewhat useless to me, even though they are easy to find in the wild, because often they do not even drop pork chops. But the variety of pigs is interesting with Dokucraft textures, some are striped or wild boar with tusks.

posted a message on Stop endermen spawning in 1.4?
I don't know if their spawning is limited, but they can certainly teleport to anywhere at least 3 air blocks high. However, if they make the mistake of teleporting to water, they immediately teleport away. So use a boat.

    posted a message on [1.8.7 / 1.7.10 and earlier][update 4/23] MCPatcher HD fix 5.0.3
I think there may be some general problem with initial patching, rather than some of the options. I am just speculating that it may be a timing issue copying the current minecraft.jar to minecraft-1-4-2.jar, and before that is ready patching to minecraft.jar.

I too had a problem with black screen after initial patching of vanilla 1.4.2 using default mcpatcher options. When I unpatched it, and repatched it without Better Skies, then it worked with Dokucraft textures. But just to test if that was the issue, I just switched to default textures, unpatched and patched with Better Skies and everything works fine with Dokucraft. So Better Skies does not appear to be the issue, something just stumbled when mcpatcher tried to do the first patch. That may explain why simply unpatching and repatching seems to work for some people.

64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 Linux using openjdk-7 (actually openjdk-6 works fine too for minecraft or tekkit client and minecraft server. It is just one tekkit server mod that requires a Java 7 version).

posted a message on Witch spawning behaviour?
We are probably all curious about witch spawning behaviour, since the wiki does not give details. It just says that if the witch falls out of the hut it will not be able to get back in (probably because it is usually at least a couple of blocks above surrounding ground).

I found a swamp hut in vanilla SMP, and have been back there several times, but have never seen a witch. I slapped a ladder on one of the front porch planks where I can jump to it from nearby ground to get into it.

I do not know if a witch has spawned there, despawned never to be seen, or will respawn. It would be a shame a witch never respawns in multiplayer.

Or maybe the proliferation of giant swamp slimes getting stuck in shallow water (making splotching sounds, but rarely moving) reduces the chance of witch spawning

They might be having server issues or something. Mine worked fine last night with 1.4.2, but right now minecraft will not even start without this error and blank screen instead of message of the day:

posted a message on Haven't played in a while. Torches seem almost useless now at keeping mobs out.
One mistake some people make is placing torches too high on walls. Of course torches do not keep mobs away, just keeps them from spawning if light level is high enough on all floor surfaces. Light level on ceilings doesn't matter.

posted a message on How Can I Get Rid Of Zombie Pigmen?
They lose their agro towards you if you go back through the portal and come back.

In 1.3.1 servers you have to be careful about pushing against them in a narrow passage, because the same bug that can sometimes cause you damage when water pushes you into a block can cause them suffocation damage if you push them into a block, and that one and any others nearby may suddenly attack you. A bunch of them attacked me once like that when I had not attacked them, but I just slashed them, grabbed some gold nuggets, and left through the portal.

posted a message on cats and creepers - wiki inaccurate?
Creepers may shy away from cats, but cats have a mind of their own and wander around. Cats do not force or prevent creepers from blowing up. If it blew, it was because you were too close to it too long (1.5 seconds).

posted a message on Villager Breeding Broken In 1.3?
I was beginning to wonder about 1.3.2 while sprucing up a village in Bukkit SMP. There were 11 original buildings and I think 4 or 5 villagers including a priest. I built a villager motel with 5 more doors. Apparently another visiting player left a creeper crater and the priest went missing, but no little ones yet. So I built another 4 room motel with 2 doors on each room (doors not directly across from each other) and finally saw a child. So now I have a blacksmith, but he wants 12 emeralds for a plain (unenchanted) diamond sword. The rest are all farmers.

posted a message on Have cave spiders been weakened in 1.3.x?
Cave spiders often used to kill me several times before I could contain or destroy their spawners. So I feared them and dressed like them (skin) to try to fit in :)

But lately in 1.3.2 SMP it seems like black spiders are stronger (they usually bite me more than once before I kill them), but there do not seem to be any venom effects from cave spiders. I don't know if I am getting better at killing them immediately, or if they got easier. I only had a Protection II chestplate on, but armor is not supposed to help against venom. I destroyed one spawner and contained another on both ends with glass panes so other players can see it. Although, that world is probably in default for servers, easy mode. Creepers certainly blow up easily (difficult to lunge and fall back far enough).

I'll have to look for a fresh abandoned mine in our other 1.2 world (multiverse) which is SMP hard mode and see if they still seem so easy.

posted a message on LAN server 127.0.0.1 IP error
The problem is that "Open to LAN" binds only to the IP that your computer points to for its hostname, which in Linux and OS X is usually a loopback IP to yourself (ie, localhost or another 127... IP). So anyone else trying to connect to that IP would connect to themself, not you.

Binding the port to ANY IP on your computer (like a normal minecraft server) would be easier, but might be considered a security risk if your computer is directly connected to the internet with a public IP (instead of behind a router). But it would be nice if eventually they would add a setting as to what IP to bind it to, so you could bind it to your LAN IP instead of localhost.

There is a work around by changing the IP that your hostname points to in /etc/hosts. But "use at your own risk" (best with static LAN IP) because I do not know if that would break something if you end up with different LAN IP, or connect to a different network or no network. Unix like systems use networking for local things that might not work if your hostname points at an IP address that is not on your box.
