Uhhhh yeah that's great and all, but that's how the game is set up. It can be 'my fault' 1,000 times over, but whether someone prepares badly for going in a cave or not, leaving them in absolute black nothingness is still a bad place to be in. Pretty effortless goes-without-saying advice for someone who knows the game, but still an unnecessary beginner's trap for a lot of players out there.

I personally couldn't really care less about this idea existing since I'll never enter a cave without more stacks of coal, torches, planks and logs than I'll ever need. There's many theoretical scenarios in a game with an infinite amount of different outcomes of someone running out of stuff in a cave and being stuck in unhelpful blackness.

Late reply. I think the presence of hardcore darkness would already tell players "hey, don't get lost in here". Even then, how would they get lost? Of course, they're not just going to enter a cave and run around without torches. For nighttime, natural intuition will already tell players that nighttime will be dark and scary, and they will set up a shelter, naturally. Minecraft players continually complain about a lack of challenge, so why not start with actual darkness?

Hardcore darkness would make lighting a completely essential thing again. Nowadays, players have their brightness set all the way up, and it's LITERALLY just a free night vision potion. Not to be rude, but Minecraft darkness is pathetic. Even MoistCr1tikal thinks so, in this one remark he made (EDIT: It's at 3:14):

posted a message on SHEARS should make shaved logs, not axes

Axes having the ability to shave logs upon right-clicking can get pretty annoying once you've unintentionally done it multiple times.

Firstly, it can get annoying while building stuff. I duel-wield tools and blocks all the time while building, as it makes it 2x easier; I can place and break while not even touching my keyboard. However, sometimes I will try to place a block in my offhand with an axe in my main hand and accidentally shave a log. And now I have a random shaved log that I don't want and have to replace.

Secondly, if you're fighting in some wooded area with an axe and shield, expect to be shaving logs left and right while trying to block. It's annoying for no damn reason and literally destroys the forest around you, unless you decide to manually replace those shaved logs with actual logs if you don't want your forest looking like it got attacked by beavers. I can't count how many times I have seen people do this, unintentionally shaving logs in some forest they're trying to fight in.

Sub-suggestion: Shovels shouldn't make path blocks, either. Like axes, they're a tool players will be using a lot of the time, and they will be accidentally creating unwanted path blocks (I've done this a couple of times, very annoying, though not as bad as shaving logs, as you can just put a block over them and turn them into normal dirt. However, I have no clue how path blocks would be created. If you have suggestions, share them.

We should leave special abilities like this to dedicated tools, like shears, for example, not tools players will be holding a quarter of the time.

posted a message on Allocating more RAM didn't do anything to my performance
    Quote from TheMasterCaver»

In any case, reducing render distance is the best way to reduce memory/CPU/GPU usage; 1.18 requires about twice as many resources due to chunks being twice as deep so to get the same usage you need to reduce render distance by about 1.4 times (square root of 2 = 1.414).

Nah, I only have 8 chunks, and that's already really depressing, especially with all the good views made available with 1.18 terrain. I'm stuck on 1.17, or else I decide to buy a billion-dollar GPU. Unless there's some weird way to increase dedicated VRAM or something.

posted a message on Allocating more RAM didn't do anything to my performance

"Just allocate more RAM," they said. "It's a JVM argument, and it will improve performance," they said. Well, I'm reminded of that quote that goes something along the lines of "If it's too good to be true, then it probably isn't," or something. In this case, changing one number and performance immediately increasing seems too good to be true...and it was.

For background, 1.18 is laggy as all hell on my computer, and there are massive lag spikes for every single chunk that is loaded (it's loading nearly twice as many resources per chunk than in 1.17.1). I get very good performance, don't get me wrong, but the problem is in loading new chunks; my 300+ FPS can drop to 2 just by flying in Creative Mode. Mods like Optifine and Sodium can't fix that; they can't affect how well your game can load chunks. So, I recently found out about directly allocating RAM using some JVM argument. It's a very simple thing to do: edit a profile, click "more options" at the bottom, and change that little "2GB" in the script window to something better. "This could improve chunk loading performance," that young, naive me from a couple of hours ago thought. So, I did that exact thing; I doubled the allocated RAM to 4 GB, loaded up the game, aaaaaaand literally no difference at all. FYI I have 16 total GB of RAM, so it didn't, like, cap at less than 4 or anything.

Now, to be fair, I completely and totally expected it to not do anything. I have a whole history of hundreds of attempts at trying to improve things and nothing ever working anyways, so I braced myself for failure way before then.

Maybe this works on only some computers, and not others? FYI I have an AMD CPU and graphics card. Maybe this only works on NVIDIA or Intel technology or something? Maybe it only works on newer motherboards (I have a bad motherboard lol)? idk man, I guess I'm just stuck on 1.17.1 forever if I don't want to play Minecraft: Slideshow Edition, unless Mojang releases some angelic patch that instantly improves 1.18 chunk loading performance and lower-end gamers like me can actually enjoy the game again. That's probably all fantasy, though. And very little people in the community seem to be even having any performance issues with the update anyways (I'm convinced 90% of MC players all have, like, RTX 3090s or something idk what going on).

Thanks for coming to me TED Vent Talk!

posted a message on Is anyone getting horrible lag from 1.18?
    Quote from Joel1»

I think four cores should still be good enough in most instances. Most modern CPUs from Intel and AMD have hyper threading, which means that that each physical core can carry out two sequences of instructions (called threads) in parallel. So if your CPU has 4 physical cores, you effectively have 8 logical cores (threads) that your computer can use. I don't know what model CPU your computer has, but this is something you can look up. Now if by 4 cores you mean it has 4 threads (logical cores) then yeah that will probably bottleneck the gameplay, but only really when you're moving fast and generating lots of chunks.

    I have a Ryzen 3 2300X, if that helps.

I only have 4 cores. It feels like 1.18 really did abandon the lower-tier computer users. It's not a bad thing; the world height had to be increased at some point. It's just kinda sad.

The minimum light level should be removed from the game entirely. I hate how in places where it should be pitch black, you can see clearly, even when your lighting is set to moody. Unlit caves will be pitch black like they should be. Light levels outside at night should vary depending on the moon's current cycle. For example, if it's a new moon, it will be completely pitch black, but if it's a full moon, you should be able to just barely see.

P.S. no "wElL yOu ShOuLd GeT tHiS mOd" replies or any other reductive, dismissive responses please. This is a legitimate suggestion for the default game.

Are those four mods made by the same person or team of people? They're all named after elements (except for phosphor, but it's still named after a substance). They have to be, their names are just too similar.

My computer isn't what you would call a "potato"; it's technically a gaming computer, but it's probably the lowest quality gaming computer out there. It's a really gourmet potato. Upon loading chunks in 1.18, my framerate gets horrendously ugly. Every chunk that's loaded causes a lag spike and flying around in Creative Mode forces my computer into a crawl. And walking around already-loaded chunks does produce some noticeable tear here and there. I really wanted to enjoy the new terrain generation and underground, but it's hard to do when the game basically turns into a slide show, and I can hear my CPU crying from my computer case.

I already know why this is: it's because the world height has essentially doubled in size, and so have the chunks, so it has to load much more. But I haven't heard anyone else having lag problems? Does every other Minecraft player except me have an RTX 3090 and I'm just not aware or something?

Anyways, I don't even think Optifine will be able to get rid of all the lag. It's good, but not that good.

Will I be stuck in 1.17.1 forever?

posted a message on Is the Backrooms Mod dead?

The Backrooms was extremely popular around a year ago or so. It's still kinda popular, but the hype around it really died down (kinda sad, was really a cool concept, and got even cooler with the expansion of all the levels). Of course, from its popularity, some talented person or group of people developed the Backrooms Mod for Minecraft, downloadable on CurseForge. But the last time it was updated was September of 2020, over a year ago. I guess I'm very late on the Backrooms hype and got into it well after its glory days. Did they abandon the mod? Maybe they're working on an update to it?
