That's how the nethers work. As posted above, 1 block of walk distance in the nether = 16 in the real world.

So it's not surprising you popped out elsewhere. That's your world, just a vastly different part of it.

I also say no. Mostly cause of what someone above me said : bug hunting = less motivation to actually code.

Umm, split this into paragraphs and maybe add commas, and try again.

    I didn't quite understand...

I might be wrong about it, but I'm pretty sure he had a deadline like that because it was a Halloween update. Hell/The Nether/Australia, Pumpkins, Stuff like that. Wouldn't have made much sense if he released Jack-o-Lanterns on Christmas or something.

Well, aside from the fact he didn't need to do a holiday themed update anyway (and really, the Jack-O-Lanterns are the only overtly Halloween themed bit - and they could have been dropped if need be (other, more important, things were)), I didn't say make it so late that it comes out at Christmas. If it came out some time in the next 7 days, it would still be close enough to Halloween to be seasonal.

I also said that, privately, he could have aimed for the date he did. I'm only saying that he could have given himself a public cushion of a few days so that he didn't feel obliged to release the code in a fairly unfit and glitchy state just because it was almost the 31st of October. He was driven by the deadline, not by the state of the code. To me, that is the wrong way round.

I do get the impression from this update, and others that have gone before it, that Notch often leaves quite a bit until the last day and then codes like a madman to get as much done as possible. If that's what works for him then so be it. However, it carries some inherent problems with it.

I agree, maybe publicly announcing wasn't the greatest route to take. Makes people expect more.

But I think as a NEW large-scale game dev (like he is now) he's still learning HOW to prioritize things. I mean, when people are asking for a million and a half things, how do you know which to prioritize over others?

I agree, fundamentals first, THEN gimmicks, but hey, everyone likes the gimmicky stuff every now and then.
I think as the game grows, so too will his feel for how to build onto it.

Its like this whole board is full of haters and fanboys. And for every hate thread there is one of these.

My point is that Notch is a person like anyone here, not a demigod. The hate threads also dont get to him, he probably doesnt even open them.

Dont get me wrong I have the utmost repsect for Notch, i just dont worship him.

He doesn't have to open an obvious hate thread to maybe feel slightly demoralized from all the filth being spewed from people. He worked hard, and if he goes on the threads to seethe fruits of his labor, to see pure hate?

Like you said, he's human. It's not easy for anyone to put a lot of work into something, then have such negative (and poorly constructed) criticism.

I'm certainly no worshiper of Notch.

I just understand that what he is doing, is not simple. Which a lot of people seem NOT to wrap their head around.

Then everyone would have been whining that he didn't release the update like he promised to.

Then he shouldn't have promised such a specific deadline IMO. If, for example, he had just said "it will come out in the week beginning 1st November and privately aimed for a release before the 31st, he could have over run by a few days and people would still be happy that he brought it in on time.

However, he didn't. He publicly imposed a specific deadline on himself, released code as it was for no better reason than it was almost midnight and a lot of people's ability to play the game broke in the process.

He publicly imposed a date to make people happy, since it sounds like people were on the QQ train already.
He was trying to reward the community, during ALPHA stage, it was released with some bugs, and people just don't give a damn.

Again, his job is NOT easy at all. Someone else come in here and tell me they can code everything he has done, on top of the pixel art I'm sure he did himself before he had a staff, and tell me it's easy.

This was a "For kicks and giggles" game until it became viral. I can't reiterate enough that I'm SURE he was NOT expecting the sudden influx of people spamming his game.

Dear Notch, thanks for leaving us with a bug riddled minecraft and then taking a nice long break before attempting to fix it. JK. But not really sort of. I know big updates have to have bugs but some of them are really annoying and aren't gonna be better for a few dAyS AND I NEED MY FIX.

So are you saying he doesn't deserve a break? His game went viral. He wasn't expecting that.

He had to hire lawyers, a staff, buy an office, all on top of HIS REAL LIFE. Yes, I'm sure he does more than CODE Minecraft all the time.

No i'm saying i wish he withheld the update until the main stuff worked: grass (the sides), portals, armor, inventory loss on death bug, and now new maps don't even have caves and dungeons with lava etc. I love minecraft but some of this stuff makes me not want to play it. So i'm not. Until it's fixed. And everyone always acts like Notch is just coding on the side. It's his job. "OMG i worked 10 hours monday!" Good, you can work 10 hours tuesday, wednesday, thrusday, and friday too. That's what everyone else does... Hiring lawyers, a staff, and buying an office is also his job

Notch WAS coding on the side until very recently, when he realized how much he could make a living off of it.

As far as I know, the inventory drop on death has been fixed already, I don't know what you mean by "new maps not having caves and dungeons..." cause I have plenty?

I think you're just trying to find anything you can to complain about.

Also, I don't think you realize just how intense coding can be? I just started a programming class for College, and let me tell you, it's NOT easy peasy. It's lots of tracing code, sometimes which has been written poorly due to sleep deprevation etc, and then figuring out exactly why your code didn't do what you wanted. Then you have to re-write that, THEN figure out what bugs you may have just caused.

It's not a magical "code once, it's good" method. Give him a friggin break. He more than deserves every moment of it.

So? A lot of people still seem to not know.

I don't CARE to found it first. I'm letting the less informed know it's there. So please leave if this doesn't help you.
