Delete everything from the mods folder in MCInstall.

Place the ModLoader files in there.

Drag the .zip file (still zipped) into the .minecraft/mods folder.

The resources folder is correct as-is.

Now I get the black screen again...

My MCInstall mods folder just has the 13 .class files found in the Modloader folder:

The Portal Gun download is weird. You download a .zip (I'll call this FIRST ZIP), which is extracted to a folder. In this folder, there are several items, one of which is the "place in mods" folder, which itself has a .properties folder and another .zip (I'll call this SECOND ZIP). I had these in the .minecraft/mods folder BEFORE:

So this time around I tried using FIRST ZIP in that .minecraft/mods folder
    AFTER:

My resources folder is still the same

Put all of the ModLoader and AudioLoader stuff in the mods folder of MCInstall.

And keep this stuff in there too?

1.5_01_PortalGun_v1.zip extracted to 1.5_01_PortalGun_v1(folder) which had a place in mods folder which had a portalgun1.5_01v1.zip and a properties folder. I placed these in the application support/minecraft/mods folder:

The portalgun1.5_01v1.zip extracted to portalgun1.5_01v1(folder) which had many classes and folders. These contents were placed in the MCInstall's mods folder:

The place in resources folder had a mod folder, so I placed that folder in resources

    I ran the installer:

    Yet the mod doesn't work:

Man...I still can't get it to work.

I've tried putting the contents of the "place in mods" folder (mod_PortalGun.properties and portalgun1.5_01v1.zip) into the MCInstall's mods folder. Then I placed the contents of the "place in resources" folder where they belonged (the 2 portalgun folders into their sound and streaming folders) Yet still no Portal Gun mod. D:

The place in mods folder goes in the .minecraft/mods folder.

The place in resources folder goes in the .minecraft/resources folder.

Apparently, this mod doesn't need to modify the minecraft.jar file.

I'm pretty sure the minecraft.jar needs to be modified because the creator seems to imply this.

have you deleted the META-INF folder in the minecraft.jar?

    I did D:

    Did you see my tutorial?

That's the way I always do it on my Mac.

When you say "Extract downloaded mod folder to the mods folder in MCInstall", you mean like the Portal Gun mod, right?
Because I tried that, and now my Minecraft loads up properly, but the mod doesn't work.

Ok, so I think we've sort of made progress. After I did all that, instead of a black screen, my minecraft window is just frozen on "Updating Minecraft" "Done loading"

I feel like I'm almost there yet, just not quite yet :x

Okay, well I'm pretty sure that the download link for modloader on that youtube link is out of date as the date the files were modified was 25/26th april. Where as the latest version of modloader was released around the 1st of may.
Try downloading the latest files from the actual threads and installing them.

    Mod loader 1.5_01v3 & Audio Mod: viewtopic.php?t=80246

Delete the entire bin folder if you have to, to start fresh and try again. Install modloader first. Nothing else, then check to see if it's installed. the net folder in modloader don't copy to the minecraft.jar one or it'll overwrite the files already in there & won't work.

I did download the files from that thread. (I used the adfly links)
And also, the OP says "Last edited by Risugami on Tue Apr 26, 2011 5:52 pm, edited 100 times in total."
This would mean the latest version was released that time at the latest, no?
I will proceed to delete the bin folder and try again.

    Nope...it still doesn't work...

I think the Modloader and Audiomod in the description were the most recent ones.

    Still no modloader.txt.

No, I don't have a modloader.txt file. I assumed that the Modloader version in the youtube link of my OP would be up to date as it was posted in April. If it's not up to date, this could very well be the problem. I'll try what you said.

The minecraft.jar folder, go inside that and highlight everything then right click and press "compress *** items" and it'll give you a archive.zip then copy and paste that and rename it minecraft.jar

maybe that might help, if it doesn't its always handy to know.

I tried that and it allows me to get to the Singleplayer/Multiplayer screen when I force update, but then when I unarchive the new "minecraft.jar" file, its contents looks as if I've never touched it at all! For example, there is no "ibxm" folder anymore.

I also tried this again with no "force update" and it just shows a black screen.

    I'm on a Mac OS X 10.4.11 (could this be a problem?)

Today I tried to use my first mod: the Portal Gun mod
    viewtopic.php?f=1032&t=215961
    But it just won't work!

I haven't even tried installing the Portal Gun mod. I can't get Modloader and Audiomod to work.

First, since I don't have Archive Utility on my Mac for some reason, I just opened minecraft.jar with Stuffit Expander (which opens .zip folders). It creates "minecraft.jar Folder" (so it's a folder) I rename that to just "minecraft.jar" and my Mac asks me if I want to change it to a .jar file to which I agree (it still has a folder icon, and if I go to 'Get Info', it also says 'Kind: Folder')

I just downloaded the Modloader and Audiomod provided in this video's description:

This was the link provided in the Portal Gun thread.

I unzipped the folders and copied all of the files in the Modloader folder into the "minecraft.jar" folder I created and replaced all of the ones that needed to be.

Then I copied the "xe.class" file and the "ibxm" folder from the Audiomod folder into the "minecraft.jar" folder. Then I copied the codec from the Audiomod "paulscode" file into the codec folder of the "paulscode" folder of the "minecraft.jar" folder.

But when I run Minecraft, it simply gives 1 of 2 problems while starting up:
Fatal error occured (4): /Users/*myname*/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar (Invalid argument)
    Retrieving: lwjgl_util.jar 40%
    OR
There is a blank, black screen.

I've tried both deleting the meta-inf folder and just deleting its contents.

    Could someone help me?
