Yes it would be nice. Yes it is possible (there even used to be a mod that did it. One of the most popular mods too)
But really, its a little game breaking. The only way I could see this working is if torches had a durability meter. Any time they are lit (whether placed, or in hand) it will slowly go down. Once it is empty, the torch is destroyed. Considering that notch is already planning something along those lines for placed torches, it doesn't seem like to much of a stretch.
But simply holding a single torch and being able to fully explore caves? Way to overpowered. I would know, like I said, I played that mod. You only ever needed to make about a dozen torches. Some to keep your house safe, and a few to place just before a fight so you can fight with a sword in the light. Other then that you NEVER needed to place a torch.
If notch does add this, it will likely be at the same time as he makes the Lantern update, and in a way similar to the way I mentioned.
I dont think exploring with a single torch would be overpowered, its still much more dangerous then filling a cavern with torches, nothings stopping things from spawning outside your little ball of light, and switching to a sword means you lose your only light source, but yes i agree that it should still have a time limit, maybe you "strike" it on something by left clicking? I know thats not really what torches do but it would work, and you wouldnt have to worry about losing torches if you decide to hold them.
In fact I remeber that when I first started playing I thought thats what you had to do, strike them on a wall XD

what i dont understand is that notch contradicts himself
he claims is a preorder with the alpha and beta as bonuses, and yet he in other parts of the site says that you get the current version when you buy it and everything ELSE is bonus so.....wth?
anyways i would like some sort of bug report menu ingame, its an alpha and these things gotsa be ironed out!
I am in full support of this arquebus idea, honeslty i feel these "rapid fire" bows in the game already bring us closer to an FPS then a single shot ever 2-3 seconds from the arquebus ever will, not that they are making it an FPS either.
The Goal: Become a tree dweller, and grow closer to the natural parts of your world
Parameters: No building may touch the ground, it must be built with the entrance coming from a tree, the tree must remain mostly intact (cant just be a trunk and must still vaguely resemble a tree)
Description: The first game of minecraft I played I had no idea how to survive, I didnt think I could make a pick out of wood so I simply did all I could, and hollowed out the inner part of a tree, I made a little hill nearby survived all but a few nights before the skeletons got me.
Conclusion: An interesting survival challenge, give yourself one life! this type of game doesnt lend itself to getting to invested in any perticular creations, just a small treetop house or hut with the bare essentials, and surviving the nights can be very rought the first few days.
