    If you are using this only for items, all you needed was a 1x1 hole, which gradually gets filled in by pistons. This is a great design for a player elevator though.

    When you have to power torches in a verticle row, it has to get messy. Just have some of your inputs coming in from the side. Note that redstone repeaters will not make a difference.

    EDIT: I see your display is just a wall with redstone torches. It is impossible to do it like this, you have to indent the redstone torches, so that the block they are sitting on is accessible from 3 different sides. So, just move the blocks that have redstone torches further away once, when looking at the display.
