I played the pre-release yesterday on a server, on a Mac, and SMP seems to be a little better. I have issues with placing logs, but I suppose it'll take some getting used to.
My main computer is my PC laptop and it lags bad in the pre-release, but I pretty much require Optifine to play anyway so I expected that. It works better than the latest snapshot did, or maybe that's just luck.
I love all the new features and blocks and can't wait for the official release so I can update my single player world.

We're a PvE server with Lockette and Antigrief Protection, as well as a friendly little community and great staff. We launched a new map for 1.7 at the end of December, so there are plenty of places to explore and settle.
Staff build everything legit in survival mode with a few small exceptions. If you want to quickly get out in the world to find a place to settle, we have a gate plugin set up right at spawn in our Nexus area. There is also a working Nether Hub so there should be no concerns about moving farther out.

We're launching a new 1.7 map this Saturday, December 28th and we'd love to have some new people on to start with us from scratch.
Vanilla Valley is pretty chill; we strictly adhere to our 18 years old or older rule and it's worked out well. No kiddie drama, no griefing troubles, but we also have a few easy to use plugins for easy grief prevention, just in case!
