Yeah, everything is up to date. I'll try changing those options.

    Thanks.

I just got a server a few days ago and everything has been working great so far until I just all of a sudden started getting weird rendering on the top of blocks in the distance. It seems like everything is correct in the chunk I am in and as I enter new chunks but anything outside of my current chunk is messed up. What could be causing this? I have a 1gb bisect server and so far I am the only one on it.

You need to use the jar server file for that, and use a batch starter file. Here is a link on how to do it: Here

I actually followed that tutorial, but thought it could be done with either the .exe or .jar.

"Both the Java and the executable version can be run from the command line with extra parameters to configure, for example, memory usage."

And were you able to find anything in the logs?

I also just went to increase the ram allotment to a max of 3gigs, but it is telling me it could not reserve enough space. I even went down to 1500MB and still got the same error, yet my resource monitor shows I have nearly 10gigs free.

I installed the minecraft server (vanilla) on my already existing home file server. It has an intel g630 (2.7 ghz), 12gb ram, minecraft server is installed on the system drive which is an SSD, and I have 50 down 25 up internet connection (the server is connected via cat6 to the router) I am pretty sure these specs should be fine to be able to host 2 or 3 people. Since starting it yesterday it crashed twice (once when no one was even on) and the lag got really bad at times. How do I decipher the crash logs? And what can I do to reduce the lag?

The core is identical to to Xbox; build a shelter, farm, mine for ores, go to the nether, enchant, build up your base then go the the End.

Of course coming to a new system is awkward, so take time learning the new controls.

    List of controls

    Control: Xbox - PC

Look around: RS - Move mouse

    Open inventory: Back - E

    Move: L3 - WASD

Hit/ mine: RT - Left click

Use/ Place: LT - Right click

    Jump/ Fly: A - Spacebar

    Drop item: Up D pad - Q

    Debug screen: Left D pad - F3

    Chat: Bottom D pad - T

    Change view: Right D pad - F5

    Crouch: R3 - Shift

Scroll block left/ right - numbers 1-9 switches through items on the toolbar

    View players: Y - Tab

The crafting system is easy once you get the hang of it; you click and drag items into the correct slots, and if it's all successfully done, the items you want to make will appear in the right slot. There are also keyboard shortcuts to make crafting easier, but you can ignore those for now until you're more comfortable with PC crafting.

I'd suggest you play around with some experimental survival worlds, see how things are different and get a feel for mouse and keyboard. Installing forge (required software for the majority of mods) can be complex for beginners, so you might want to leave that until you've gotten more of a hang of Vanilla. However, as you ask for mini map mods, here are a couple I know of: Journey Map and Voxelmap.

Hope you get the hang of it, and welcome to PC land :)

Thanks. Its not really the controls that I have problems with at all, but the different gameplay. Like having to actually memorize how to craft everything and even knowing what all can be crafted. I prefer the UI of the xbox better so far, and didn't know if there was a mod to make the pc version more like it.

I'll have to go find those shortcuts, because that will probably help me out some too.

Mods are local and have to be installed on everyones client to work. You cannot install a mod to a server, but you may install a plugin. Unfourtantly though this is impossible though due to the legal takedown of Bukkit which is required for all 1.8 servers to operate. You might say why not get a 1.7 one, but trading of server files is illegal due to Mojangs EULA.

Ok, now I'm even more lost about how it all works. I really need to go find a FAQ or beginners thread for mods.

I have been playing on Xbox One for a month or so now and have become addicted and gotten a few of my friends hooked as well. After seeing all that I was missing I just today bought the PC version and plan on playing that mostly. I am also looking to set up a server so I can play with a few friends on the same world.

The PC version is just so different and it is almost like I have to learn everything over again so if anyone has any tips or suggestions about switching from the console version or setting up a small server it is all very welcome.

Also I have looked around, but can't find much. Is there a FAQ or a noob thread I can read to learn about mods? And I would also be interested in any suggestions for both a basic mini map mod and one that would make crafting easier (similar to the way it is on a console) that could be installed on the server.

Are you using ANY double pistons? I heard this causes a redstone crash. Just curious.

I have a few double pistons that were in place before the update and they still work fine.
