Well, this is one of my own planned mob traps. It's basically planned for skeletons, creepers and zombies.
It has 8 doors on it.
First you get mobs attetion, up there. And get them walk to pressure plates, so doors open and they walk inside, inside is cactus, they got kill'd by it, and stuff stays at the ground, and at the morning you can walk inside and get the stuff. ( You are able to open doors without pressure plates inside, mobs aren't..
You don't see slimes every day! (And by that I mean real days.) Here you can post slime screenshots, talk about slimes, and even wonder why Slimeballs have no use (yet).

It was on a multiplayer sever and a kept hearing you know what so i dug and dug until like 6 of them
were following me there was so many they were pushing me and finally one of them pushed me in lava with all my iron lol !

May as well tell a bit about my trap. The biggest mob trap I've ever made is a 22*60 double-layer trap, with a lava grinder. I am currently working on a drowning trap, because it seems to be more efficient. And, when I have nothing to do, I may as well add a third floor. Combine it with lighting up every cave in the 'spawning circle' around the collection point, and this should give another boost.
These traps are easy to make. Dig out a 3 blocks high room, I prefer 22 blocks wide, and make it as long as you want. 2x2 channel in the middle, 2x2x8 branches attached to it, and that's it. This way you can easily put the lights out after you're done.
Another note: Dig them out. Don't make sky traps, they are ugly, and an underground trap of the same size will spawn more mobs.
I usually build my dwelling into the bottom of the face of a cliff. No roof for the spiders to climb on. Downside: creepers jumping on my head from the top of the cliff anyways.
Generally it faces directly onto the sea. No front lawn for monsters to spawn on, and even if a creeper blows up next to me right as I exit...he's gotta be standing in water to be there, so at least he doesn't blow my front doorway apart. Downside: monsters may not be able to spawn on water or swim in deep water but they can wade like nobody's business, and when they are in water they don't catch on fire during the day.
Both these problems can be alleviated somewhat by what I call the blister entrance. Build your doorway into an extended entryway with walls and ceiling of glass, giving you an all-around view to left, right, and above as you exit, so you can check the area before exiting in the morning. If there are other monsters about, you can always come out the door shooting or stabbing as the situation requires, or try another exit (always build auxilliary entrances).
As for the specific case of a spider on your glass roof...after checking to make sure nothing else is around, back slowly out the door while looking up, and stab the first piece of him which pokes over the top of your doorway. Or if you're not short on glass, spiders can't fall through 1x1 holes, so break a hole in your roof and stab him in the belly with your sword. But remember to fix it afterwards. I forgot once, and a creeper got inside and blew up at the top of my stairway down into my mine, deep inside my dwelling.
Another tip on exiting your door in the morning: mobs can see you through your door, or through a glass wall, but apparently only if they're already following you. So if they are nearby but not TOO nearby, open your door just long enough for them to see you, then close it again. They will see you and head straight for you, but end up blocked by the door. Provided you properly placed the door from the outside when building it, they can't hurt you and creepers won't explode...but you can poke your sword out through the window of your door and stab them in the face until they are safely dead. Just make sure you poke through the window and not the frame of the door, or you might accidentally open the door when you really, really, really don't want to.
Reminds me of what happens every time I am low on health...
Here I am, half a heart left, running towards my base. I see the gates, the skeletons firing arrows missing me by centimeters. I run through, the mobs getting stuck behind the gate! I'm homefree! I turn around to look at the mo-HOLYSHITSPIDERINTHEFENCE!!!

this is knida off topic too but one day i was sittin in my house and there was a creeper staring at me in my window lol
and i went up too him and teased him with a cooked porkchop dam he really wanted it so i go on and keep cooking some porkchops when i hear sssss boom while 2 more come outta no where blow me up and lagh in thier minds lol
