That's pretty much what I suspected but thanks for the response. I've started copying the tree (only including minecraft files) as a simple backup onto a thumbdrive. So, when I have to delete it from my current laptop I won't lose anything. I have a nice program called Beyond Compare that updates all the changed files in a heartbeat.

No, I'm sorry. I'm not familiar enough with the program to know what it is hanging on. I could hazard about three guesses all of which will probably be wrong. Were there two versions offered on the download page. I just remembered that I actually had no luck installing one version and had to go with the second one. I don't think I was having the same problem which is why I didn't think of this in the first place. I uninstalled and reinstalled using the second download choice and it worked.

"Download Minecraft.exe, place it anywhere you want, then run it.
If that version doesn't work for some reason, try this: Minecraft.exe"

I've tried all compatibility modes, none worked. It's still freezing on the Mojang Specifications screen.

Any other ideas I could try?

Thanks, Notch! Shafts reopened. Only allowing two empty blocks between torches (in the 2x3's) in prep for any future changes regading light level. I sure appreciate the fact you read, try duplicating the issue and respond if appropriate.

All my mine shafts, from the down-and-dirty 2x3's to the 18x18 drop shaft with glass ceilings and horizontal shafts off to every side are very well lit. That's why I was amazed when, within two minutes of being in a mine so well lit it hurts my eyes (kidding but you get the drift) I had to fight 2 skeletons, one spider and one zombie. I can't deep mine and keep looking over my shoulder after every two whacks with my pick. Just not worth it. I've closed off all horizontal shafts below level 40. My deepest one was 110 blocks (started up on a high plateau and kept going until I hit adminium).

Maybe over time some kind of rule-of-thumb standard will emerge that will allow me to get back to work. I guess I could put one torch on each top block on both side walls in my horizontal shafts but that seems kinda silly. I cannot even begin to imagine torches needing relit coupled with the apparent sun-stroke light level required in deep shafts. egads!

I'm sure more learned members will chime in but I have noticed, when XP is mentioned as being the OS, that there are quite a few suggestions that you run the program in Compatibility Mode (win2000 appears to be the OS of choice). If you are not sure how to do that let me know.

Yes, googled, forum searched, read stickies. Would like to play MineCraft in browser and have the .minecraft folder tree located on a USB thumbdrive instead of the default (windows 7) of users/user.name/appdata/roaming/.minecraft. I have searched my Registry to see if there was a key value I could change. Actually, there is no instance of minecraft or mojang in the Registry so no joy in mudville. Thanks.

Okay, I cooled down and decided to close off most of my mines instead of getting killed over and over again trying to light them up per the sunburst requirements we're working under now for deep mines. I shut most of them down (got a LOT of stuff from them anyway). There is one horizontal shaft that I wanted to keep that runs off of a vertical shaft and is actually quite deep. I also have a lot invested in a cart system because it was taking so long to get to the end of the horizontal shaft to start mining again.

So I armed myself with a zillion torches, ventured down and was glad to see that the smaller horizontal shaft was mob free. I went along the shaft making sure that no more than two blocks existed between torches. I got to the end of the smaller shaft and began on the spacious shaft, running from side to side adding torches like a maniac on speed. I looked forward and saw a zombie. That was to be expected. I knew I'd have a fight on my hands and was looking forward to the action. It was quite a big ahead so I kept putting up torches. I happened to glance back. There was a flippin' skeleton just walking out of the smaller shaft towards me, behind him about 15 blocks was a creeper. Both had spawned in a small shaft with torches not more than two blocks from each other. I killed both, threw up my hands and left the damn shaft to them. Dunno where Notch is headed but I hope he manages to remember the name of the game. One should expect to be able to MINE & CRAFT (and fight!!). This is beyond stupid. I'll monitor the forums and my son's experiences and come back to the game when it starts making sense again. No way I'm playing on peaceful. I like to mix it up but this is moronic.

A torch every third block seems to do the trick for me:
    :--+: :soil: :soil: :--+:
have not had any of the problems you describe.

Looks like a :--+: :soil: :soil: :soil: :--+: is my 'thing'. Heck, I don't mind fighting so I'll just do a sweep of my deep mines and try your pattern between mobs. haha If that gets them down to a manageable onslaught then I'm back in business. Thanks.
