It may be possible to close minecraft while still viewing your death message, open the world in an external editor, and set the world to non-hardcore mode. I am unsure if this would work though.

Level 11 is probably the best overall. If you cannot get coordinates to work on your computer, your feet should occupy the block above most lava lakes. This way, you can simply use a water bucket to cross them (by making obsidian) rather than having to change heights to pass them (or have them pour in on your head)

If the light level reads as 0 in the debug screen, then the spawning rules should follow that. The lighting bug will probably be purely graphical.

    1. Your basic set of tools; sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel

    2. Torches (and supplies to make torches); carry however much you expect to use

    3. Cobblestone; it's useful for both building travel bases (to wait out nights) and for tools

    4. Food. Because you need to eat things

    5. Armor; better not to die and have to find your stuff again, right? Small investment, large payout.

With your tools you can resupply on wood and cobblestone (and as a result, tools and torches)

If you run out of room on land and decide not to expand the island, you can always build underground.

As much as a necro'd post annoys me, this challenge looks like fun. I'll look into it once I complete the City Construction Challenge.

It can get messy lol. But it makes great furnace fuel if you are too afraid to use it for anything else.

There are safer mob proof elevator designs than to use lava though.

posted a message on Alternative Uses for Lava
Lava, I feel, is one of the most under-appreciated resources in the game. It is quite useful in many places. In order to help more people make the most of this liquid, I have put together a short list of its many uses. Things will be added as people post them.

    1. Cheap (free), long lasting furnace fuel
    2. Powerful lightsource
    3. Can be used to easily and freely reclaim land from the sea (as smoothstone)
    4. Can be used defensively (as walls and moats)
    5. Can be used in a grinder
    6. (Cobble)stone generators
    7. Construction
    8. Incinerator/Trash cans

Anyone else have alternative uses for lava?
