Do you have any charts that consider the number of blocks (or. if you want to get fancy the number of ore blocks) exposed to air inside the cave across the changes to cave generation? Would be interesting to look at.
Also. as someone who frequently gets lots when exploring caves, I am curious to if you have system to navigate complex cave systems without getting lost.
@Foil767 This would be true if not for the fact that it would generate from the same seed. "Random world generation" is not so much random as seemingly random. Given the same seed, it will generate the same world. Given that it has been a long while since the last change to world generation, its safe to assume he is on a recent enough version.
Fortresses are generated in lines that run north and south, so traveling more east/west you are more likely to intercept one of these lines. However since you've already found one traveling north and south on that line theoretically you should have a good chance of finding one.

Ah, this must have change since I last did testing. Portals (at least prior to changes) operated solely on horizontal coordinates and could be exploited for easy vertical transportation.
I'm unsure how it applies to villages, but I know for Nether portals, distance is calculated solely by horizontal distance. This may also apply to villages, perhaps meaning that you need to separate your villages horizontally rather than vertically.
Some consideration that may show vertical distance is not considered is that occasionally, buildings in an NPC village is spawned at a huge vertical distance due to terrain generation.
You could theme it to be a post-apocalyptic environmental research facility, with equipment/living quarters/etc. in the center dome and environments to be studied in the surrounding domes.
Zitchas is very much right, variety is the spice of life.
You don't have to commit yourself to a single project (and that's usually not even the best idea.)
Commit yourself to projects in sections, so that you can feel you have accomplished things at the end of each section. For instance, if you are building some sort of mega-castle, commit to a tower or a section of wall at a time. When you finish with each section, take a step back and enjoy your work.
If you get bored, don't be afraid to work on something else for awhile. Build a nice cottage or some other small project, or work on a section of another project. In essence, put milestones in the construction processes so that you can see your work progress and motivate yourself to the next milestone.
As Zitchas also said, don't be afraid to have a creative area or world. Don't be afraid to commit yourself to creative entirely for awhile. Variety and creativity are the very core of minecraft.
The rooms look so large that you may need dividers of some sort in order to segment them, or you can have open areas of different purposes in the center. It definitely feels futuristic, like a science lab, so science lab areas are a definite possibility.

Primarily use it as a source of lava for smelting and decoration, as well as the occasional defensive structure.

Something to research would be the differences between current cave generation now and in Alpha when the "Never dig straight down" rule began.

Very cool. I assume you alternate between chests and trap chests to put them next to each other?

Test for yourself and see what works.

I think this is because of the way the AI processes signs as safe blocks to stand on.
