Don't you have a private forum somewhere else? I know it. Because we never see it. It's all yours. And you break all the rules there, and since you're all mode, nobody gives a ****. So there's a lot of flaming and porn!

    /conspiracy theory

The system used for deciding on applications is not operated through minecraftforum.net, your application status on minecraftforum.net doesn't (currently) reflect your application's "real" status

posted a message on "Simple Questions and Answers" threads
There are multiple "problems" with the idea and better ways to approach this, but you're right that such a thread would provide value to users and is the easiest way to solve the problem.

The reasons such a thread is useful are:

    1. People want quick answers to their problems
    2. Searching can be difficult (especially if a question is very hard to phrase, or if it's never been asked before)

However the problem with the idea is it causes huge amounts of repetition. It's very inefficient: if a user has asked "what colour is diamond?" before, why would someone else need to ask it again? Shouldn't they be able to find that answer straight away? Then there is the issue of discussion, if an issue has a more complex answer then "blue" it may need to be an independent topic.

I would love to address this problem properly, with some form of comprehensive knowledge base with an effective search system, but I think this sort of thing would be in the hands of Mojang more than us and I'm unsure how they would feel about us operating our own knowledgebase -- although I could always ask.

I guess ultimately the idea is good, there are much better ways to solve the problem, but this would be a good "first step" that has no real barrier to entry, no development time, no staff time investment. There are a lot of great things I would love to do with support and general problems, unfortunately we have finite developer time and we have higher priorities right now. Maybe one day...

    anyway I digress, good idea.

Actually I feel like talking about how I imagine the "perfect" support system based on your idea of "simple" questions:

A web page like google, a simple input box prompting the user to answer "What do you want to know?" or "What is your problem?" then after submitting their question they'd be given a list of the most likely answers they need, I guess a good example would be something like wolframalpha, with really great natural language processing. Anyway, then after submitting the question if they don't get an answer from the defined list they can select "Get help from real people" and that posts the question into a "real time" help system.

The real time help system is sort of like a forum, but much more basic: questions show in a stream with an easy "answer" option and users earn points for properly answering a question, a proper answer is committed to the knowledge base and eventually the knowledgebase solves all the problems. Think of a simplified Stackoverflow with the primary function being a knowledgebase. So a "helper" could load a web page and get questions pushed to them, they earn a bounty ("diamonds"?) for answering and the user would get a response to their question within maybe a minute if there were enough helpers.

I would love to build that sometime.
