UPDATE 7/16/2017: Please note that the Gulliver aspect of the Big Sister Server has officially been retired, and the server is now running vanilla Minecraft 1.12. It is also being managed on a new thread with a new whitelist found here:

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/servers/pc-servers/2840492-big-sister-minecraft-server-whitelisted-vanilla

This thread is now obsolete and will no longer be used to write whitelist applications for the Big Sister server. Thank you all for your patronage these past four years on the Big Sister Gulliver Minecraft Server, and I hope you will continue on the new vanilla server for many more years to come!

UPDATE 5/27/2017: Please note that discussions are currently underway to retire the Gulliver aspect of the Big Sister Server earlier than anticipated, and to replace this with a cutting-edge Vanilla server. This means that whitelist applications for the Gulliver server will be discontinued soon and a new whitelist server will be created to accommodate the Vanilla server.

Stay tuned for more information in the coming month!

    =====

Hello, and thank you for your interest in the Big Sister Gulliver Minecraft server!
We now have a server trailer for your viewing pleasure....

Our Big Sister Minecraft Gulliver Server began as an alternate mirror server (or "sister" server) for Gunia's Gulliver server (otherwise known as the "main" server), circa October 2013. It has since branched off into its own micro-community, and currently boasts the latest Gulliver for Minecraftv1.6.4. As of mid-January, the server is running Gulliver Forged with the intent of incorporating Forge Essentials in the near-future.Our community is actually compromised of two servers:

      • The stable, builder-centric Big Sister server, which permanently runs Gulliver-Forged, accommodates up to 40 people, and can be accessed with the IP: bigsister.mcserver.ws
      • And our experimental cutting-edge Little Brother server, which changes mod flavors every month, accommodates 10 people, and can be accessed at: littlebrother.mcserver.ws

    .

Otherwise, you can also apply for the whitelist here on this thread using the application below. Before you continue, please take a minute to view the official Big Sister Server Quick Guide for an overview of the server and the installation setup. If after reading the guide you still wish to continue, please reply to this thread with your completed copy of the application below....

    ===============================

    1) What is your Minecraft username (or "IGN")?
Please don't forget this as we won't know how to whitelist you on the server.
For security reasons, we cannot assume your forum username is equal to your Minecraft one.

    2) Please explain why you would like to join the Server.
We are looking for a detailed and honest explanation, ideally between 60 to 90 words. Focus on your reasons for joining our server specifically over other server options (such as whether you like our documentation, our server videos, or our Dynmap), but you can also include such things as how you heard about this server, how you were acquainted with UncleMion's Gulliver Mod, or if you have had any experience in prior Gulliver servers.

    3) Please explain how your talents, skills, experience, personality traits, and aspirations can help contribute positively to our server.
You are free to be a little broad here since you have likely never been to our server and don't know how we're like. But your goal here is to demonstrate, ideally between 60 to 90 words, how you expect to do your part to help keep our server a happy, peaceful and productive place. Things like maturity, building cred, and an independent spirit are valuable to us, but you're more than welcomed to be creative here.

    4) Please list five random facts about yourself that can help differentiate you from other players.
It can be very easy to rinse and repeat the same answers from the previous two questions, so here is your chance to truly differentiate yourself from other players. List five amazing facts about yourself that make you special or that may be of interest to someone in our community. Be sure to write detailed responses in full sentences, and bulleted-out to make it easier for us to read.

Here is my own list of random facts to illustrate how you should list these:

    • I bake breads in real life, but from non-standard ingredients like flax, sorghum, coconut, banana and almond flour.
    • I own a pony and llama farm, and engage in the side business of selling the magic of friendship and cheap-imitation alpaca coats.
    • I have a full-time job that more than pays for the server (hence why no donations are needed).
    • I own two fantastic Chromebooks, both running Ubuntu Linux in a ChromeOS chroot environment and XFCE4.
    • I enjoying eating almost all my food with mint chutney and ghee, although I don't eat wheat in any way, shape or form.

Of course these are just examples, and unless you really really like mint chutney or have unusual "pets", it would look really strange to see these same samples in your own list of facts. So be clever and creative! Now is your time to shine!

    5) To ensure you understand your rights and responsibilities on our server, please read the Novice's Creed, and write down one right or responsibility that you enjoy the most.
Feel free to copy and paste it here, or paraphrase it from memory. The most important thing to demonstrate is that you opened the document and read enough of it to pick one of the rights or responsibilities listed. What you picked may be used to assess your personality, so choose wisely and feel free to explain your choice if you want.

    6) And finally, to confirm that you read the Big Sister Server Quick Guide please write down the name of the official server currency.
Again, we just need to make sure you opened the guide and can find the answer to this very simple question.

    ===============================

Hopefully the information you need has been provided to you in the most clear and detailed way possible, but if you have any questions or are unsure about something, feel free to ask us first before submitting your application.Thank you and good luck!.

I imagine this'll probably get taken down, but oh well.

While I can't think of any less, ah, overzealous large-scale Minecraft server that runs Gulliver, I thought I'd point people to the "Minecraft Me" server as an example of running a server done right. Unlike quite a few public, non-whitelisted servers, it doesn't have irksome things like donation benefits or other vaguely "pay-to-win" elements. Instead, it is a peaceful, pleasant server where people work together and the mods are likable. There are rules, and these rules are enforced; the server is a well-run, amicable environment, kept free of griefers and other unpleasant people without restricting access to the public.

The point I'm trying to make is that it is, in fact, possible to have a server with a strong, pleasant community without overzealous moderators and a strict (and somewhat laughable) application process. Perhaps it's a bit silly to bar access to people who make spelling mistakes or grammar errors? It seems rather absurd to take the time to type complete, well-structured sentences in an online chat in a game, so why should it then be expected for them to do so on an online forum for the same game? Furthermore, the questions are unnecessary. People want access to the server because they like Minecraft, they like the Gulliver mod, and they want to enjoy the mod with a larger community.

Big Sister is alarmingly pretentious and strict for a server for a sandbox game.

    Looking at you, ciabatta!

Who me? But I'm actually retired so I don't run this server anymore, hence why you haven't seen me do any kind of whitelist reviews recently. ;P

If you have any kind of complaints, I would take it up with the current server owners as they are more likely to take your words into consideration. For more information about the current staff structure, you can check out this page:

    http://ciabatta-breadalot.blogspot.com/p/guides.html

But for the uninitiated that may be reading this, I'll offer my own two cents on Jester's feedback.... ^^

    1) Nope, as a matter of protocol, we only request to take down posts that are threatening, or are full of innuendo or vulgarity, but criticism is perfectly okay. You're probably the 100th person that's posted their grievances since our inception.

    2) As I understand it, the Minecraft Me server is a vanilla MInecraft server, not a Gulliver Server... that may seem like a trivial matter, but due to issues outside of our control Gulliver tends to be a magnet for people with problematic intentions [shall we say]. In our first year the whitelist application reviews were done rather more generously, and as a result we had a lot of problems with a lot of unsavory people abusing of that trust [shall we say]. So the tighter standards were not established straight off, but were an evolutionary response to the ever present and real threat of indecency, and has definitely grown to be our first line of defense. A lot things that may seem ridiculous to someone not-in-the-know are in fact carefully crafted to gauge the personality type of the applicant; and in fact, it's been successful at weeding out people with explosive intentions (either figuratively or literally).

And if it makes us look bad, well more power to us... that makes us more like a humble porcupine filled to the brim with quills. Sure, no one likes us, but they generally leave us alone too, so that works out in the end.

    3) Minecraft Me also has the advantage of not being tied to Minecraft 1.6.4 (I believe), so it can take advantage of newer built-in security features, or proper security plugins. That's not entirely possible given our setup with Gulliver, so we have to compensate with a more traditional security apparatus.

    4) We haven't requested donations either (other than having people donate their time), so that's just in case Jester may have inadvertently assumed we do. In fact, a big reason why the server is closing in January 2018 is because it's no longer financially-worth maintaining a 5 year old server that few people barely play with anymore, so it's time to close shop. In contrast, most of the players HAVE moved on to Little Brother and that is constantly active, so in the coming weeks and months you'll see that server slowly supplant all of Big Sister's resources.

And I think that should be all. ;D

FYI, we tend to not want people who are violent and swear a lot, so you will have a lot to explain with this one.

    1) What is your Minecraft username (or "IGN")?
    _Kaori

    2) Please explain why you would like to join the Server.
    .
I feel as if I can get a fresh start here, and enjoy myself to the fullest. Just be myself, and grow closer to a group of people I can actually call family or best friends. I don't want to join simply because I can, or because its something to do. I want this application to be accept because simply I want to enjoy myself, and be myself at the same time. Not in constant fear of people that would bully me just for being my happy self. I want to spend my time, making friends, helping the community and doing anything I can to make people around me happy. I want to offer something that alot of people have difficulties doing. My trust, the willingness to give my word and honest opinion. As I myself have difficulty with trusting some people, I want to break free of that here, learn to really trust people and sort of grow out of my shell. If at all that makes sense. A Member of your Server; TGG_Triston, has helped me find this server and told me many a great things about it. How to him, it felt like a family. And thats something I really want for myself aswell.

    3) Please explain how your talents, skills, experience, personality traits, and aspirations can help contribute positively to our server.
I'm skillful in many various things, such as; Building, Surviving and Teaching thoose about the game that otherwise would be defenseless on their own. I'm kind, caring, and thoughtful of the people in need of someone to help them. I love everything to do with Nature, and the background of it. I find beauty in the things most people would just look past. I enjoy music, and that of the Japanese Culture, not to mention my constant need to consider myself that of a peaceful nature. I despise hostility, though I'm used to it everyday in and out. As the real world is a dangerous beast. I strive to be as helpful to anyone and everyone as I possibly can and hope that you'll enjoy my company in the days to come.

    4) Please list five random facts about yourself that can help differentiate you from other players.

I'm rather free-spirited. As the seasons change, so do I myself. Sometimes I can be mellow and at other times, energetic. And even at the worst of times, I can just turn the entire tide of the mood around in favor of myself. I think that I'd like to just be myself and let the natural flow of things take over. I'd like to stay open-minded to thoose around me, and constantly change my attitude towards thoose that would otherwise be harmful to others. Instead of just outright attacking the person or harming another, I'd like to reason with them and try to understand their problems aswell. Sort of like a neutral force of things to balance out any and all problems. The best example to describe myself would be Compassionate.

    5) To ensure you understand your rights and responsibilities on our server, please read the Novice's Creed, and write down one right or responsibility that you enjoy the most.

    2.
If held or kidnapped by a Giant player against your will, or attacked by a PvPobsessed player, you
have the right to protest the act or defend yourself if necessary.

[ I think this Right itself is very fair in itself, as in most situations, i'd be left without any say at all in the matter, and better grasp the situation, instead of being left helpless against my will.]

    6) And finally, to confirm that you read the Big Sister Server Quick Guide please write down the name of the official server currency.
Cheese, glorious Cheese would be the tasteful currency in this Server as the Official Currency. I'd also like to add that I find it as a reminder to an old show I used to watch called Tom & Jerry. Silly Tom.

    Hello Holo, ^^

Well now,... apparently the beginning of January is a VERY busy time for my staff members who are both at school AND work, as no one is available to review this any time soon. So I will go ahead and review your application myself -- I usually don't as I rather not deprive my staff members of some valuable training experience, but it's still something I like doing on occasion, especially with very creative applications.

Anyway, let's begin... and thank you for attempting to make edits to your application as I had advised a few days. Even though I don't see the right things being edited, it's the thought that's appreciated. ^^

First and foremost, you have essentially TWO applications, so that makes things rather confusing to the would-be reviewer. I at least had the sense to check the second "quoted" application and realize that it had better, newer content, so that's the one I will use for this review. However, anyone else could have easily confused the first application as THE application, and I would not have faulted them given it is not altogether clear which one to use. You really must get used to the Edit features on this forum.

Secondly, you seem to have a lot of trouble with grammar, so expect that I will point this out a lot in my review, especially if it interferes with the understanding of some of your questions.

    QUESTION 1:
Hmmm, it'll take a while to get used to that in lieu of Holo. ^^

    QUESTION 2:
Well I certainly appreciate the concept of a fresh start. I also like how your old and new responses emphasize the need to be yourself, grow your talents and be part of a certain kind of community. Note, however, that while we do try to prevent general bullying and trolling from occurring, there will be some banter that can happen from time to time, and we expect that you will not be SO overly sensitive as to have this upset you too quickly. Have a good time, yes, but also learn to be self-confident, assertive, independent and thick-skinned, calm in the face of adversary, especially in the rare occasion a bully gets through the whitelist review. In other words, be ready to reserve a little bit of fear for use in self-defense.

Secondly, do NOT offer your unconditional trust for anything, not even something that is highly praised such as our server, and ESPECIALLY if you have some trust issues of your own. I have a saying: "trust is earned, not owed", and this holds very true on this server. You will come with some set of expectations, and while I am confident we will meet and even surpass some of those expectations, I know for a fact we will disappoint in other regards. And that is perfectly normal, human even... but for someone betting their unconditional trust in exchange for a flawless experience, that is a surefire way to get you to feel betrayed and let down. It is better for us if you come here with only tempered expectations and little trust, and then gradually open yourself up ("grow out of your shell", if you will) once you have a better understanding of who we are and what we are about. It is the secret to a lasting and effective sense of trust and friendship.

Thirdly, while there is no mention in this answer of server details or why you like Gulliver, I do notice you reference Triston as a friend -- and despite being a bit of a goofball at times, he has been a good and helpful player, so his recommendation carries a lot of weight. And yes, he does put us on a bit of a pedestal, so I'm not surprised if you got the impression from him that we're some kind of angelic sanctuary of family love... I'm pretty sure that's not quite true, but regardless I trust he's also explained some of the technicalities of our server life. In any event, I will waive the need to detail your interest of our server since you're essentially following the lead of a good friend.

    QUESTION 3:
Given the spelling mistakes and the very odd grammar syntax, I get the impression that you're not a native English speaker -- that might not be true, but it's certainly the vibe I get. But at least it's not entirely atrocious compared to some of the other applications I've seen, so I can at least understand the points you're trying to make regarding yourself:

1> you like to build [in Minecraft]
2> you know how to survive [in Minecraft]
3> you help newer or younger players in Minecraft
4> you're a thoughtful person to people in need [although I wish you were thoughtful to the people reviewing your application, heh] XD
5> you like nature... we should talk about bugs sometime. I find them cute. :3
    6> you like music
7> you like Japanese culture [and I could almost swear you WERE Japanese] XD
8> wait, you need to "consider yourself peaceful? why not just BE peaceful? XD
9> you hate hostility... so you'll probably hate me, I'm quite evil, or at least I certainly pull no punches when doing app reviews. :P
10> and you try to be the change you want to see in the world... which I can personally respect, since it's one of my own aspirations. ^^

So anyway, that certainly sounds very useful to the server, and I believe we can overlook the bad grammar for now. :P

    QUESTION 4:
Okay yes, so now HERE is where you sadly missed the boat, even after the edit, since the question is specifically asking for FIVE random facts that describe something you do, not something you are personality-wise [which is reserved for question 3]. It also needs to be in bullet points and not written out as one big, hard-to-read paragraph that is torturous to me to break out and analyze -- observe how other applications before you bulleted out these five facts, and try to imitate that.

I will review each point anyway just to point out whats wrong:

1> "I'm rather free-spirited." -- not even sure what this means, and it could probably fall under question 3.

2> "As the seasons change, so do I myself. " -- you are not a tree. Anyway, same issue with 4.1 above, this doesn't belong in question 4.

3> "Sometimes I can be mellow and at other times, energetic. " -- question 3 thing, unless this is caused by a physical or neurological condition that you care to describe (though I recommend not).

4> "And even at the worst of times, I can just turn the entire tide of the mood around in favor of myself. " -- question 3. -.-

    5> "I think that I'd like to just be myself and let the natural flow of things take over." -- question 3. ^^;

6> " I'd like to stay open-minded to thoose around me, and constantly change my attitude towards thoose that would otherwise be harmful to others." -- Hard to read,... and belongs in question 3.

7> "Instead of just outright attacking the person or harming another, I'd like to reason with them and try to understand their problems aswell. Sort of like a neutral force of things to balance out any and all problems. The best example to describe myself would be Compassionate." -- this is a great trait to have, but..... yep.... belongs in question 3! XD

So yeah, all seven of the points I was able to decipher are incorrect based on the purpose of this question, and worse, many are just repeats of things you've already said in question 3 anyway.

Question 4 is reserved for things of interest about you, that don't necessarily pertain to your personality (at least not directly). Some examples include:

    - I have a pet chinchilla named "Megumi Hayashibara", and she loves eating parsnips.

    - I have a full set of copic markers that I use to draw my own web-manga called "Holo-san Knows Best-o"!

    - I love eating watermelons and breaking them with a bat at beach parties

^ those are the kinds of answer's we're looking for here.

    QUESTION 5:
This question you did answer correctly and remarkably -- and interestingly, you picked one that was inherently of hostile nature, going out of your comfort zone a bit. That's good. ^^

    QUESTION 6:
Haha, I used to like that cartoon too long ago. In any case, yes that is correct.

    CONCLUSION:
Well aside from Question 4 which is completely [and sadly] unsalvageable, the rest of your application is very not-bad... it would be great if it had better grammar and spelling, but even without it I rather like it and the kind of person you're trying to describe yourself as.

I would almost be tempted to just forgive the travesty in question 4 and just let you in purely trusting that you are who you say you are -- but again, I don't believe trust is owed but rather earned. And flaunting one of the most important questions we have would be a disservice to all the players and staff members relying on this whitelist process to be fair and consistent with all would-be applicants, as at this point we can't convey any unconditional trust of our own.

Therefore... I will ask you to repost your application in a new post... only this time, I want you to scrap your entire Question 4, and redo it as a bulleted list of fun facts about hobbies or pastimes you engage in [NOT related to Minecraft!] that will be fun and enjoyable for me to read.

If you want to make me happier, you also have two optional goals for your revised application:

#1: improve the grammar and spelling further
#2: briefly explain why you like the Gulliver mod

These aren't required, but they are helpful demonstrations of how far you'd go to make people happy, as you said earlier.

Either way, if your revised application follows my feedback and proves to be the best application I've ever seen out of you, then you will have earned the trust required to get a whitelist on our server. ^^

    Good luck! :)
