good suggestion. i ran into this when my sugar cane was too far from my home base and i had to change it to be closer. i would like to see the change you suggest.
ended up with 8 stacks of iron and 13 raw iron blocks. what do i do with that much iron? i now i can make an anvil but don't have any enchanted stuff yet.
i have no idea what to do with this iron. i am down on -54 looking for diamond. doing a two deep path setting a torch every 6 blocks to side search after the path done probably 20 torches. going through tuff i find an iron. and a few blocks away another iron. ok but i am looking for diamond. then i do a side search and i find four or five more iron, like hidden behind the tuff because i usually skip digging in that. well, as i searched, more and more iron. i am not done yet but i think i am close. i have over three stacks of iron and found 3 blocks of iron. i just looked it up and i am in an ore vein. i did find 2 diamond also and some redstone. beta 1.18.10.27. finally found out what makes it crash. do not have any charcoal or coal in your back pack. if you open up the crafting table the campfire will appear in if you touch the cursor to the campfire it locks up. key 1821888614. mineshaft is at level 42 -175 42 440. ore vein is around -189 -54 339.
the only mod i use is the natural pack from microsoft. never been to the nether yet and don't know how to get there but i have fun playing the overworld so far. with the new towns on the hills it is a challenge. you can't wall a town on this latest key. and i don't play with the bonus chest. i start from scratch. but when a new update comes for the beta i delete my world and start again from scratch doing things differently with experimentation. so far thats interesting.
i am still figuring out how to mine for diamonds. this method i used was in length for two hours and got 6 diamonds. i ladder down to level 54 and start mining with stone picks. i do stop at level 14 and get some iron. i mine the first block at eye level and the block at knee level one block ahead. this method i find is the fastest. after 6 blocks put a torch at the knees on the wall. repeat continually unless redstone, diamond or gold appears. when my stone pick is gone, i turn back and take down one level above me back to the start of the tunnel. then dig down two levels at the start of the tunnel to level 56. repeat digging until i get to where i stopped the first time. this time is a little faster because i don't have to put any torches. then tunnel at level 58. i dig a lot of side tunnels to check to check for ores. level 1.18.2 seems very sparse in diamond and am still trying to improve my methods.
Also my fps is normally fine, but as soon as I start using maps it plummets and then the game crashes.
i had to switch back to my xbox and bedrock. my computer on java is so slow now. the recent updates are really slowing the playing and the jerking of the display is too much.
diamond is hard to find in any caves. caves at y-40 don't have many diamond either. my best method to find diamonds on snapshot 21w44a is ladder down to level 57 and get stone picks and mine forward a block at a time and put a torch every 4 blocks on the ground. the biggest problem is lava. i go up to y-54 and don't mine into lava but don't find many diamonds either. find some redstone and occasionally iron. if you have plenty of iron, you can use iron picks. it is tedious though. i find as soon as i get diamonds, take them to the chest and store them before i get burned by lava. it's slow going.
snapshot 21w43a. 57 i have so much difficulty finding redstone. i mined at y-6, then y-32, then y-57. finally found diamond and when i took out the 3 diamonds, there was redstone next to it. i am going to compare if there is a new snapshot today.
testing, testing, testing. my problem was options, controls, mouse settings, touchscreen mode:ON was the problem. touchscreen mode:OFF now my items move automatically when i hold down right shift and click the item.

i like your suggestions about using copper to do shears and buckets. at least for water. iron should be used for lava.
