You can disable them by playing 1.8.9 and below xD

I hope they manage to fix the remaining major bugs in time, which I'm not sure if they are going to manage to pull off with there only being 1 more day. There are ways to make it so your shield becomes permanently active, basically making you almost invincible. There is also even a bug which allows you to become immune to knockback effects until you die or reload the world. I sure hope they're not rushing this, even if it's been almost 2 years since we last got a major update.
