Think about it: 2 days out of the month (updates are roughly monthly) he has to work extra hard in a speedy fashion. Then, in compensation, he can take 2 extra days off when the bugs are fixed. I'd rather have Beta 1.7's release be delayed a few days then have 1.7 come out and then have to wait days for a CRUCIAL bugfix. He would still be spending the same amount of time working, but minecrafters would have to wait to play NEW features, instead of waiting to just be able play the game at all.

I agree, but in this case I think he just didn't know the length of 1 block. If we told him 1 block is 1 meter long he could have figured it out (I'm hoping.)
No, you need to displace 1000m in one ride. If you end up closer than 1000m from your starting point, you don't get the achievement.
