posted a message on Why is there such a vehement opposition towards any real difficulty in this game?

The gamers that clamour for harder monsters and better AI were obviously born with a controller in their hand or something. As for me, I used to consider that most games were too hard to play, basically because it appears that 90% of the gaming community has better coordination, can fight better, do stuff quicker and has better gaming machines than I do. My opinion hasn't changed that markedly in the intervening 20 years, although I've got slightly better at Doom(1995). As for the previous commenter, Minecraft is indeed easier than a lot of other games I play, because it focusses on building and collaboration. Monsters (and having to defend against them all) are a pain, but it's not stupidly difficult like some other games I've had a go at and discarded because I'm simply not able to keep up. I find it's a game that allows for children to play alongside older adults, and they both have fun without being blasted off the game because of the dfficulty.

Making the difficulty more "real" is really hard to quantify, because you have to judge what the context is. What was the game designed to do? What are its constraints? Can we even compare it to games like ARMA/CoD (no???) or even games like Terraria/Starbound (closer, but still different)? What is it that these players want? 35 hours spent in the game while you battle just to build a simple brick house? I don't think so, that'd end up being a fight-fest instead of a buildfest and would be far less enjoyable for the casual players among us. We'd probably give up in disgust because it had become yet another DayZ clone, but with blocks instead.

You launched 1.8 and that increased the render distance. Delete options.txt.

Heh. This made me laugh, as normally I wander into the options.txt, find the offending line, and change the relevant value (renderDistance, I think). Once a tinkerer, always a tinkerer?

Deleting the options.txt is messy for me because of all the keybindings I'd then have to redo along with all the other settings that get stuffed into there by mods I was using before 1.9. Still, it's a valid option if you've made no appreciable changes to your setup, i.e. you still use the standard minecraft bindings. It'll at least give you a clean slate with which to work, and you don't have to chase stupid weird dependencies like I did once.

I did a quick search but haven't found something relevant yet. I created configs, which show up fine in the .macros.txt as separate sections. What I don't seem to get though, is that the gui.xml stuff seems to be global, not local to the config. What am I missing?

I created a screen with lots of buttons on for the server I'm on, then when I log into my own server (a different place) I get the same buttons, but all greyed out when I attempt to edit them. I'd like to know how to get the .gui.xml to have multiple sections like the .macros.txt seems to.

    I'm on mod_macros_0.11.1_beta2

    posted a message on WorldEditCUI
I was having a visual issue with WorldEditCUI and Optifine 1.7.10-HD-U-A4.

    • 32-bit Vista, 4Gb memory,
    • ATI HD3450 with 256Mb memory. Latest legacy driver for the ATI is installed.
    • Minecraft 1.7.10 with Forge and liteloader installed in a profile,
    • minecraft version's called "release 1.7.10-LiteLoader-1.7.10-Forge10.13.2.1230".
    • In Forge's Mod tab, MCP shows as 9.05, Minecraft Forge shows as 10.13.2.1230, and FML shows as 7.10.85.1230
    • Optifine shows as 1.7.10_HD_U_A4.
Over on Linux (again, 32 bit, with open source video driver), the same combination of WorldEditCUI and Optifine (and the aforementioned Forge, liteloader and OptiFine) have no visual trouble when I select an area. On Windows, it's another thing altogether. The whole window goes gray/blue as soon as I go //pos1 or //hpos1. If I'm in third-person, the window goes black instead. The visual issue clears if I use the WorldEditCUI Clear Selection key (I've set that to c here). So, where do I point to first? Optifine, or WorldEditCUI?

Nothing turns up in the devel log except INFO level lines: "[CHAT] Starting a new selection at ... ... ..." and "[CHAT] Selection Cleared" when I clear it. I also notice a red grid flash on for a very short time when I do clear the selection, then I get all my normal textures back.

The server is Spigot, I'm not aware of what version it's supposed to be, as I'm not the server owner, but it can accept connections from 1.7.2 clients all the way to 1.8.1 clients (weird). What other information would you like? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to lend towards this and I'm happy to wait for any likely fixes to turn up.

EDIT: I installed an update to Optifine (HD_U_B4) the issue hasn't gone away. I guess this might just be an Optifine problem.

I'm glad to have mod_macros for 1.7.10 working again, it's doing pretty well, with just the usual headache about modifying raw files when the server IP changes. I know (roughly) what to do about that now.

Not to stir the apple cart or anything, but does anyone (perhaps Mumfrey) know what happened to Improved Chat after 1.6.4? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and I'm rather missing its functionality. To be fair, I haven't investigated anything else yet.

I believe the error is because of wikispaces no longer having free wikis except for educational purposes (K-12, etc). Let's hope the wiki can be migrated, or that there's another wiki set up somewhere I'm not (yet) aware of.

posted a message on How Long Have You Been Playing MC?
I bought Minecraft three days after I bought the Humble Bundle 4 and gained some free Minecraft play (about the only time I've ever seen them do this). I realised I was "addicted" when I played nothing else for three days straight (and slept and ate). Previously I'd just played other FPS games and Café World... shudder. Anyhow, I started with Beta 1.7.3 and have played fairly regularly ever since then, both vanilla and modded.

posted a message on Kiwis!!! (Flightless, nocturnal neutral birds!). [Now with pictures!] [30 supporters!]
Kiwi in Minecraft? Oh yeah! After all, they have ocelots already. They can be great predators. We could see how readily the kiwi survive. Could we add defensive behaviour to them, so they run away if an ocelot is within 10 blocks?

What's even more confusing to others, not only is the bird referred to simply as "kiwi" (look at that kiwi under the bush), it's both singular and plural (see all those kiwi over there). In addition us New Zealanders even refer to ourselves as "Kiwi" (Anika Moa and Dave Dobbyn are Kiwi singers). Other cultures call a Chinese gooseberry a "kiwi" (I'm looking at you Americans here). Chinese gooseberries are called "kiwifruit" here to reduce the confusion about the fruit.

Thanks for that explanation, I was sure there must have been a reason. I hadn't seen any roadmap established, so I thought I'd at least ask. I miss mod_macros, I got eaten by witches before I could frantically type /home wheretheheckisthebackspacekeybecauseImadeabadmistake

    sigh. Life as a minecrafter.

Quick question, and I hope you forgive me. Is there any timeline for 1.7.4 development in place? I ask this because the only multiplayer server I'm on happens to be using 1.7.4, not 1.7.2. As a result, I'm currently without mods of any kind, including your excellent liteloader, and mod_Macros and ImprovedChat.

Thanks for any replies you have on the subject.

For anyone that still cares, Improved Chat for 1.6.4 litemod version. Chrismack says he got fewer than 50 downloads for the last version so this is where support ends from our side. However I've pushed the current internal source (warning: it's pretty nasty) to my GitHub account for anyone that wants to maintain this going forward, crazy fool as they may be.

Uhm, seriously? That few? Heck, I'm still downloading it, all be it from the thread here. I care! I don't actually have the expertise to maintain a project like this, so I'm not even going to put my hand up for doing so, but I hope this gets maintained. I can at least take a look at it now.

    Quote from aminecraftguy00

I haven't noticed either of the said bugs. It might just be you.

That's not the case for the sound, as others have wondered why their Minecraft client was playing three tunes simultaneously. The graphics... I don't know. I also haven't checked with other animated items in the hand, just the torch. I originally tested this on Linux, as I normally run my Minecraft under Linux to gain better stability. I checked it again under Vista and thankfully didn't see the same graphical bug, but the sound bug definitely is still there. I've got two tunes playing right now this moment. As for the graphics, I suspect it's a small issue with the graphical driver that I won't be able to do anything about.

posted a message on 13w42b weird sound and graphics bugs
As I was playing with 13w42b, I noticed two bugs. The first bug is that occasionally, minecraft will try to play two tunes simultaneously. This sounds a bit hilarious. Or I'll get tunes back-to-back-to-back.

The second is evident when I start up a world, and put a torch in my hand. The world goes crazy and all the textures scramble, changing about four or five times a second, until I take the torch out of my hand. At this stage, the world textures settle into the last texture they had loaded (usually completely scrambled). It's not present for 13w41b, but then I guess that's no surprise.

I rather hope they fix these particular bugs.

posted a message on World Downloader Mod
I'm having trouble. WorldDownloader works fine downloading sections of the world where I walk around. That bit works fine. The bit that doesn't currently work (with 1.4.7 and skmclauncher) is chest-saving. I click on "Download this world" and the world starts downloading. If I right-click on a chest, nothing turns up in the chat log. When I close it again, I also get no message in chat. I then select "Stop downloading", wait until it says "Your single player world is ready..." and I'm good to go. If I open up the saved singleplayer world, I get empty chests. So. Where do I start?

Edit: hmmm.... it seems that even though it's not reporting to chat any more, I am now getting saved chest contents. Weird, because when I was trying this two nights ago, it wasn't working. Still, I guess I have to save all my chests now.

I used the MacroMod before - you shold never try it :steve_wink:

Hm. I've used mod_macros for quite some time, I love it. It's kept my minecraft butt safe more times than I can count. The recent release of the ImprovedChat liteloader variant is pretty good too, I'm using that to log chat to disk, and keep chats from separate sources in their own tab. I think literally the only thing I'm missing is the ability to highlight chat text from my history.
